Article on WikiBound Porky

Porky Minch (ポーキー・ミンチ, Porky/Pokey Minch), also known as Pokey Minch, The Pig King, or King P, is a character who originated in EarthBound. A self-centered and rotten brat, Porky becomes a self-aggrandizing, sadistic monarch in Lucas's homeland after retreating through time from Ness and his party.

Origin

Porky Minch first appeared in EarthBound and was Ness's snooty neighbor. In the beginning of EarthBound, Porky temporarily joined Ness' team to find his brother Picky. However, whenever the team encounters an enemy, the cowardly Porky doesn't fight. He later turns against Ness and becomes his enemy by joining the intergalactic destroyer Giygas. Towards the end of EarthBound, Porky is fought alongside Giygas in a "Heavily Armored" machine. His attacks involve charging at Ness' party, tearing into them (probably with the machine's legs) and unleashing a very stinky gas which lowers stats. After unleashing Giygas's true form, he flees from the scene by time traveling, leaving Ness and his companions to fight Giygas.

Porky later appears in Mother 3 as the main antagonist and leader of the Pigmask Army. He appears in a machine similar to the Heavily Armored Machine in EarthBound. The attacks he does, however, are not specified (For example, "What did Porky do?") though they look like certain moves (such as Fassad's Bombs). In this game, he has ordered robots designed after him to be created, which are used in some of his attacks in Brawl.

Role in The Subspace Emissary

Porky's art for Brawl.

As the third boss of the The Subspace Emissary and a general of the Subspace Army, Porky sends Primids to divert Lucas before deploying his giant statue, The Pig King Statue, that soon starts to hunt Lucas down. This statue is indestructible, OHKOing at simple contact, so Lucas has no choice but to escape; the giant statue destroys containers, barrels, enemies, and even metallic buildings. Lucas finally comes to a small water marsh, which seems to save him as the Pig King Statue sinks into it, but the Statue soon respawns. The Pig King Statue can even damage Lucas as it is respawning.

Lucas then stumbles after catching his foot in a grass knot, and just as the giant statue has him, Ness appears and uses PK Thunder which causes the statue to tip over. The statue once again recovers and flies into the air, this time to crush Ness. However, Ness uses a PK Flash and the statue explodes, revealing Porky Minch himself (in his bed-mecha from Mother 3), who immediately challenges Lucas and Ness.

Porky Minch attacks by moving around and by using a variety of lasers, as well as small Porky-bot enemies. Porky moves by facing towards the screen and walking side-to-side like a crab. Despite its appearance, the player can actually step on the glass vial on top of Porky's Bed-Mecha and avoid some attacks, while other times it leaves the player perfectly open to damage; but at this position, the player is capable of attacking the whole time standing up there. Snake can plant mines on Porky that will explode next time he attacks. However, most of the time the characters will slide off quickly. This can, however, cause the Earthquake Glitch to occur, defeating him quickly. The edge of Porky's cage is sloped, despite its appearance. This can be held as strategic value, and fast-falling attacks (e.g. Aether, Stone, Final Cutter) can land on Porky then slide off, out of range of his legs.

Porky is eventually taken down, making his machine explode and fall into the background, twitching. His condition after the explosion is unknown. He is brought back by Tabuu to distract the heroes in The Great Maze.

Moveset

Like all bosses, Porky is controllable with hacks in Boss Battles Mode. The start button will, like all other bosses, self-destruct him. Several of its attacks (86%) can OHKO at least on the higher difficulties, some even in Boss Battles.

Move Input Description Move Number
Thrust Attack (突き攻撃) A Porky's walker does a flurry of stabs, inflicting extremely heavy damage if all blows land (over 160% on Intense difficulty). Even on Easy difficulty in Boss Battles the damage is very high (about 70%). The last hit alone has decent knockback, and on Very Hard (Intense in Boss Battles) most hits landing can lead to an OHKO. It is possible to DI out of it by approaching towards him and jumping above, although the attack can easily trap the player and inflict multiple hits. Some characters can crouch under this move. 1
Jump Press (ジャンププレス) A^ Porky's walker jumps up high and tries to land on the player. On Intense difficulty, damage can reach 48%; however, it is rarely used and predictable. 3
Crab Walk (カニ歩き) < or > Porky's walker walks around. Contact does minor damage (up to 22%) and decent knockback (KOing below 70% on Intense but quite over 100% on lower difficulties). Difficult to see coming (the walker speeds up a little and its eyes glow), but easily avoided by staying away or jumping over the mech. 1
Energy Ray (エネルギー光線) B Porky's walker creates a ball of energy, which shoots an extremely swift laser towards the player. In the air, it is a multi-hit attack and on the ground it is a powerful one-hit attack that does upwards of 50%. On the higher difficulties, it's fast enough to circle around for a second hit; on Intense it can even deal a third hit, inflicting up to 150% with every hit KOing below 50%. On this difficulty, both variants of the laser can OHKO in most if not all situations, while touching the sparkling sphere is always a guaranteed KO (even in Boss Battles), being close to the upper blast line. On Very Hard and lower difficulties this move cannot OHKO (since the beam will circle around a maximum of two times) while the character has still super armor, and each hit will KO above 50% and deal less damage; however, it's still a dreaded attack. Its speed, unpredictable startup, and power make it very dangerous, even more considering it is extremely difficult to avoid or shield. 2
Plasma Attack (プラズマアタック) B^ Porky's walker hovers up, and tries to attack the player with a lightning bolt. At low HP, he does this two or three times (depending on whether or not he's on turbo). Standing on Porky will not dodge the attack, instead dealing weaker vertical knockback, but is still very dangerous since the player is very close to the upper blast line. 3
Porky Robo (ポーキーロボ) Bv Porky's walker sends out six Mecha-Porkies from Mother 3 that try to self-destruct on the player, bursting on contact much like a Bombed (although they cannot throw their head). If they are attacked with a projectile, they trip and explode, inflicting up to 30%. The burst has strong KO power on Very Hard and above, but won't KO until much later in Boss Battles. In Boss Battles, the robots can still deal damage to the player even after Porky himself has been defeated. 2
Rush Attack (突進攻撃) Unusable Porky's walker hops slightly before rapidly charging at the player and off-screen. Very swift and quite unpredictable, this attack is very powerful, dealing up to 58% and massive knockback. It can KO at very low percentages, especially if the player is close to the side blast lines. Jumping over the walker is advised over other methods of avoiding it but, if the player doesn't jump off in time, they will be carried past the side blast line. 1

Like all bosses in Brawl, Porky gains an additional ×0.6 damage resistance modifier when fought in co-op mode, effectively gaining 67% more health. This modifier is applied whenever the second player is in-game, and is no longer applied if the second player loses all their stocks.

Ntsc Porky was just a chubby, selfish little boy in EarthBound. When he next appeared, in Mother 3, look what he'd become! We might need another two games just to explain how this occurred. Oh, Porky, what in Eagleland (or beyond?) happened to change you so?

Pal In EarthBound, Porky was just a chubby, selfish little boy. But by the time Mother 3 comes around... well, just look at what he's become. It would probably take another two full games just to explain how this remarkable transformation came to pass. Oh, Porky, where in the world did you go wrong...?

Trivia

  • Porky can damage the player after he has run out of HP, though he cannot KO the player in this state, as the blastzones cease to exist once Porky's HP is fully depleted.
    • If the player defeats Porky while he is performing his jumping or running attack, he will complete the attack before beginning his defeat animation.
    • Additionally, any Porky-bots on-screen while Porky is KO'd remain active and can still hit the player with their explosions.
  • The sound effect heard when Porky is defeated is similar to the sound effect used for the Ultimate Chimera's roar in Mother 3.
  • Porky is the only boss:
    • whose Brawl trophy is different than his official artwork.
    • to have a weakness to the darkness and aura attacks.
    • to have different resistance values depending on the location and mode he is fought.
  • Porky is currently the only boss in the Super Smash Bros. series to lack a spirit in Ultimate; however, the Absolutely Safe Capsule which Porky seals himself inside at the end of Mother 3 does appear as a spirit.
