Dunban (ダンバン, Danban) is a character from the Xenoblade universe.
Character description
Dunban first appears in the Battle of Sword Valley, before even Shulk (being the first character the player controls when starting the game). He uses the Monado to send back waves of Mechon, at the cost of the use of his right arm, and as a result of his success in the battle, he is known as the "Hero of the Homs." He eventually joins Shulk in his quest, able to fight using his left arm. Like Shulk and his friend Reyn, his motivations are to exact his revenge upon the Mechon (and Metal Face in particular) for their attack on Colony 9.
Dunban is a wise party member. He often acts as the voice of reason, as he is the eldest Homs party member (Melia is technically the oldest in the group when compared in Homs years), and one of the most traveled. He still defers to Shulk, but will often provide advice as to how Shulk should act. He is also the older brother of Fiora, Shulk's childhood friend who was killed in the attack.
In combat, Dunban is categorized as the group's agile tank: a nimble, yet hard-hitting combo-oriented character. While he has low health compared to some of the others in the group (namely Reyn and Riki), he possesses extremely high accuracy, evasion and strength to compensate for this shortcoming. His arts are designed to inflict high damage and be used one after the other to stack status effects on a single target that most other party members are unable to inflict alone. His high accuracy allows Dunban to fight up level while his high evasion allows him to effortlessly dodge oncoming attacks. Coupled with his immense strength, Dunban is a force to be reckoned with in the battlefield. He can draw aggro extremely easily against a single target thanks to his high damage per second output, which can make him an ideal tank (should one not elect to use Reyn in their current party).
In Super Smash Bros. 4
Dunban appears in Shulk's Final Smash. He appears alongside Riki to use a Chain Attack on the trapped opponent, before Shulk sends the foe flying.
Shulk's black costume is based on Dunban's color scheme. Additionally, Dunban is also the basis for a paid downloadable content costume for Mii Swordfighters. Nintendo also released a QR code for those who wish to have the exact Mii used in the costume's advertising.
Trophy
Dunban appears as a trophy in both versions.
- Dunban was hailed as a hero when he stopped the Mechon invasion of Bionis with the Monado. However, it cost him the use of his right arm. He's always looking out for others, and Shulk sees him as an older brother. In Shulk's Final Smash, Dunban, Riki, and Shulk team up to overwhelm the enemy!

Trivia
- Mii Swordfighters in the Dunban costume still use their sword right-handed, as all Mii Swordfighters do. However, in Xenoblade Chronicles, Dunban's right arm is crippled from overuse of the Monado in the prologue. As a result, he only fights left-handed after the events of Sword Valley, which is when he wears the outfit that the costume is based on.
- Dunban's Japanese voice actor, Ryō Horikawa, is also the voice of Captain Falcon.
