Lucina (ルキナ, Lucina) is a character from the Fire Emblem series tactical role-playing games, introduced in its thirteenth instalment Fire Emblem: Awakening as one of its three main characters. She is a distant descendant of Marth, and is the daughter of fellow protagonist Chrom.
Character description
Lucina is a princess of the kingdom of Ylisse, the successor state to the now-ancient kingdom of Archanea, and is Chrom's daughter. She bears the holy bloodline of Ylisse's rulers, the exalts, who carry the power of the legendary dragon Naga and her holy gifts to humanity: the Fire Emblem and the blade Falchion; this power is signified by the presence of a distinctive Brand on their bodies, with Lucina's being located in the iris of her left eye.
The adult Lucina the game primarily features is a time-traveller from an alternate future, who travels back to the current timeline in Fire Emblem: Awakening due to the antagonistic dragon Grima and his legions of Risen zombies bringing her own world to ruin. Desperate to reverse this event, she and other future children of Chrom's allies, the Shepherds, travel back in time to prevent the revival of Grima in Chrom's timeline and make the future a better place. When she travels back in time, she initially hides her identity by tying her hair back, wearing a distinctive mask given to her by Gerome, one of her allies from the future, and adopting the name "Marth", her famous ancestor. She often runs into Chrom and the Shepherds, saving her aunt Lissa from the first of the Risen on one occasion and duelling Chrom in Arena Ferox in another. Her disguise is ruined during an assassination attempt on her aunt Emmeryn while defending Chrom, causing her to disappear, only to reappear two years later, again defending Chrom from a Risen attack. She accidentally reveals herself as his daughter, then confirms it by showing Chrom the Brand in her eye, just like his newborn daughter. Lucina then joins the Shepherds to assist them in a new war, now fighting under her actual name, which "reminds (her) of the strength of the man and woman who chose it".
In game, she is the second playable character that starts in the Lord class by default (inheriting this class from Chrom), and is the only future child whose recruitment is required. As she is pivotal to the story, she is one of the few units that will not be permanently lost, even in classic mode. Like Chrom, her weapon of choice is Falchion (which has unlimited durability, unlike the various items Robin must use in Fire Emblem: Awakening and Super Smash Bros. 4), but her version of the famed sword is the distinctive "Parallel Falchion" brought back from her future: unlike Chrom's version, it is more powerful and can heal her when it is used like an item, whereas Chrom's Falchion is initally weaker with its power sealed away and must be upgraded before the final battle to become stronger than Lucina's. Lucina can either be a potential wife for male Robin or female Robin's daughter if the latter is married to Chrom. There is also a variety of potential affine relationships between Robin and Lucina which are not acknowledged in game.
Due to the international success of Fire Emblem Awakening and her appearance in Smash, Lucina is one of the most popular Fire Emblem characters worldwide outside of Smash. Since Awakening, Lucina has also appeared as a guest character in Fire Emblem Fates and Code Name: S.T.E.A.M., in both cases summoned in-game using her Smash amiibo. Lucina also makes another guest appearance alongside her father in Project X Zone 2, a crossover strategy game featuring Bandai Namco, Capcom, Sega and Nintendo characters (including fellow Smash fighter Ryu).
In Super Smash Bros. 4
Lucina appears as a newcomer in Super Smash Bros. 4. She is a clone of Marth, though she is shorter, and the strength of her blade is balanced throughout, rather than stronger at the tip like Marth's blade.
Appropriately, she is unlockable by completing Classic Mode with Marth on any difficulty in the 3DS version and on 5.5 Intensity or higher in the Wii U version.
Of note is that she was originally planned to be an alternate costume of Marth, but was given her own character slot later in development due to "the characteristics of their attacks being different".
On the current tier list for SSB4, Lucina is ranked 47th out of 56 characters, placing her six spots below Marth. While her Parallel Falchion grants her a good disjointed reach, she still suffers from high endlag in her moves, much like Marth. She also lacks a tipper, giving her a generally weaker neutral game than Marth, though this still gives her some slight advantages over Marth, as the consistent damage from her sword allows her to afford being closer to opponents, all while still delivering decent damage and knockback. As a whole, the few strengths she possesses over Marth are fairly minor, and she is generally seen as an inferior version of him, resulting in lower tournament representation and results in comparison.
Trophies
- Lucina
- Chrom's daughter and the future Princess of Ylisse. When she arrives from a doomed future seeking to prevent it from ever happening, she goes by the name Marth before her identity is revealed. She fights much like her adopted namesake, but more than just the tip of her sword is powerful.
- Chrom's daughter and the future Princess of Ylisse. When she arrives from a doomed future seeking to prevent it from ever happening, she goes by the name Marth before her identity is revealed. She fights much like her adopted namesake, but her entire blade is equally powerful instead of having a more powerful tip.
- Daughter of Chrom and future Princess of Ylisse. When she comes from the future to prevent a terrible future from unfolding, she goes by the name of Marth, but only until her true identity comes to light. She is a very similar fighter to Marth, except it doesn't actually matter which part of her sword she strikes with.
- Lucina (Alt.)
- Lucina's moves are much like Marth's, but there are subtle differences. With Marth, you need to try to hit with the tip of his sword, but Lucina's sword is equally powerful all along the blade. Her Shield Breaker move lets her attack opponents and break their shields at the same time. Charge it fully to shatter shields in one hit.

Trivia
- Lucina's appearance in Smash 4 makes her the only clone to be female; all of the others are male (with the exception of one from Melee being gender-neutral).
- This also makes her the first female unlockable character in the series, along with, technically, Wendy O. Koopa, who appears as an alternate model swap of Bowser Jr. in Smash 4; again, all of the other unlockable characters are male and gender-neutral (referring to Pokémon).
- Lucina and Robin are the first characters in the Fire Emblem series who debuted in the same game to appear in a Smash Bros. game.
- Lucina is the only clone to speak a different language from the character she is based on (in non-Japanese versions only), as Fire Emblem: Awakening received a full English dub for Western markets. Coincidentally, Project X Zone 2 only has a Japanese voice track despite its worldwide release, making Lucina's appearance in that game similar to Marth's situation in Smash.
