This page documents the update history of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The base game was released worldwide on December 7th, 2018. Due to the presence of a day 1 patch, only the physical version of the game is possible to play on 1.0.0.

This update was released alongside the game's Australian release on December 7th, 2018 at midnight AEDT (December 6th, 2018 at 13:00 UTC)[1], its first official release in any time zone (also known as a "day 1 patch").

  • Offline Gameplay
  • Online Gameplay
    • Online now includes Quickplay, Battle Arenas, Spectate, and Background Matchmaking.
    • Global Smash Power will now be displayed.
    • Note that the above requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  • Game Data Adjustments
    • The ability to receive spirit event data has been added.
    • The ability to receive presents has been added.
  • DLC Content
    • The special bonus for the Fighters Pass, Xenoblade Chronicles 2's Rex's Mii Fighter costume (Swordfighter type), has been added.
  • Misc.
    • Game balance adjustments.
    • Various gameplay fixes.

    • Adjusted difficulty of approaching challengers.
  • Online Gameplay
    • When matchmaking in Quickplay, the Format setting of your Preferred Rules will be more highly prioritized. This may cause matchmaking to take more time, and there's still no guarantee that you'll find a match that has your exact Preferred Rules.
    • Increased the stability of the synchronous connection within Battle Arenas.

NOTE: Online features require a Nintendo Switch Online membership.

    • Can now be played with up to four players offline
    • The following spirits can now appear in the shop:
      • Partner Pikachu
      • Partner Eevee
      • Dice Block
      • River Survival

    • Three tries for spirits in Spirit Battles
  • Online Mode
    • GSP calculation method has been adjusted
  • General
    • Piranha Plant added as a playable fighter, a spirit, and a smash tag
    • Pressing both jump buttons now inputs a short hop
    • Fixed an issue where the KO score included one's teammate KO when Team Attack is on
    • Characters now respawn in the center of omega-form stages instead of to the left
    • Bug fixes:
      • Patched out the Infinite Assist Trophy glitch
      • Fixed a glitch where if Olimar had any Attack-increasing Spirits equipped, the Attack multiplier would be applied twice for any of his attacks involving Pikmin, causing extremely large damage outputs
      • The song "Bein' Friend" was renamed to "Bein' Friends".
    • Game-balance adjustments
  • Reversed the function of hide models when the camera get too close to the fighters in camera mode. this was done mainly to avoid the error of showing Split models.

    • Fixed an issue in ver. 2.0.0 where an adventure challenge featuring King K. Rool could not be completed. If this issue has affected you, please load the corresponding Adventure save data and then return to the main menu.

    • Various gameplay fixes.

  • Offline
    • Stage Builder added to Games & More. You can draw your own custom stages by hand.

Note: Camera controls are not available when converting a replay that contains a custom stage into a video.

  • Edit Video feature added to Vault → Replays. You can now create new movies using several videos made from replays.

Note: Only videos from Ver. 3.0.0 or later can be used as source material. There are planned expansions to the Edit Video feature in future updates.

  • DLC Spirits option added to the Spirits menu.

Note: DLC spirits can only be used if you have purchased the corresponding downloadable content.

  • The following spirits will appear in the Vault Shop:

    • Ryuji Sakamoto
    • Ann Takamaki
    • Yusuke Kitagawa
    • Makoto Niijima
    • Futaba Sakura
    • Haru Okumura

  • Online
    • You can now share replays, videos, Mii Fighters and custom stages with people around the world in Shared Content.

Note:

  • You can only post replays and videos created with Ver. 3.0.0 and on.
  • You cannot post replays of online/local wireless battles on custom stages, or videos that include custom stages.
  • You can now sync your game with Smash World, a service accessible via the Nintendo Switch Online smart device app. Available features include viewing some of the things posted to Shared Content, and creating spirit teams from the spirits you have collected.

Note: The Smash World service is planned to begin after the distribution of Ver. 3.0.0. If you still don't see Smash World in your list of services, please try again later.

  • It is now easier to be matched with players who have a similar Global Smash Power in Quickplay. Further improvements and adjustments to matchmaking are planned.

Note: A paid membership to the Nintendo Switch Online service is needed to use these features. Please also see "Notice about Online Play" for more details.

  • General
    • The following downloadable content will be usable after purchase:
      • Joker Challenger Pack
      • Persona 3 Protagonist Wig + Outfit
      • Persona 4 Protagonist Wig + Outfit
      • Teddie Hat
      • Morgana Hat
      • Tails Hat + Outfit
      • Knuckles Hat + Outfit
    • You cannot make videos of replays that contain DLC you have not purchased (fighters, stages, music, Mii Fighter costumes, etc.)
    • Game-balance adjustments have been made. Please see the official website for details of fixes and changes to fighters.
    • Several issues have been fixed to improve gameplay experience.
