The Great Cave Offensive is a stage that appears in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. It was revealed, apparently unintentionally, on the official Smash Bros. Facebook page on October 5th, 2014. The lone image of the stage was captioned as "Kirby's going for a ride in a mine cart. Well, this situation looks familiar. This stage has some rules that are rare in the Smash Bros. series." It was later confirmed during the October 2014 Nintendo Direct that the stage is based on The Great Cave Offensive. Pockets of lava appear on the stage, called "Danger Zones", which KOs anyone above 100% damage. Also, mine carts will appear, allowing fighters to ride in them, hitting other fighters. According to said Nintendo Direct, The Great Cave Offensive will support 8-player battles. This stage and Palutena's Temple are the largest stages in the game, even larger than Temple and 75m.

Origin

This stage originates from the sub-game The Great Cave Offensive of Kirby Super Star. In the game, Kirby falls down a hole whilst taking a walk, and he must venture through the expansive cave to escape. There are four different areas of the cave: Sub-Tree, Crystal, Old Tower, and Garden. Each area can be seen on this stage. Sub-Tree area is the top part of the stage, Crystal area is the right side, Garden area is the left side, and the Old Tower area can be seen in the background in the middle.

Each area's final level had Kirby riding a minecart through the cave to the next area. In this stage, there is a minecart that players can ride through the stage. In the Garden area, there is a cave that has spinning cannons that fire Kirby depending on which direction they're facing, and he must figure out the correct path in order to progress through the level. In this stage, there are two spinning cannons with one of them being in the Garden area. In Kirby Super Star, the Old Tower area was the only area that had lava on the walls and ceiling in certain levels; however, in this stage there is lava in every area.
