Spring Man (スプリングマン, Spring Man) is a character and playable fighter in the Nintendo Switch game ARMS.

Origin

Spring Man is one of the playable fighters in ARMS. He was one of the first characters revealed for the game and is its mascot, though not truly the central protagonist according to producer Kosuke Yabuki. As his name implies, his design is themed around springs, such as his ARMS being extendable springs, his hair being coiled like a spring, and his stadium. Spring Man is the newest contestant to join the Grand Prix, which he dreams to be the champion of. In his Grand Prix ending, Spring Man is seen in a suit with championship belts around his arms while walking away from a podium in front of several adoring fans. All of this implies that he won the Grand Prix, which has been confirmed in companion media. In the ARMS world, this Spring Man is the third fighter to earn the title in sponsorship with the Spring Gym and his immediate predecessor appears in the graphic novel series.

The Toaster ARM.

The Toaster ARM is a basic ARM in ARMS and is one of Spring Man's default ARMS. It functions as a standard boxing glove, but gains Fire properties when charged.

Rush is a mechanic in ARMS which allows a fighter to unleash rapid punches to deal large amounts of damage. In order to use a Rush, a fighter must first fill their Rush Gauge, which can be done through various means, primarily by dealing and taking damage.

Spring Man is an Assist Trophy in Ultimate. He attacks his opponents using the Toaster ARMS and has a large range. After taking enough damage, he can attack with a Rush, a flurry of punches that can potentially KO opponents. He is also one of several Assist Trophies with the ability to air dodge, which has a similar animation to his aerial dash that can be used to evade attacks in ARMS. He can be KO'd to earn a point. He uses recycled voice clips from ARMS as well.

Spring Man is seen in Min Min's Final Smash, ARMS Rush and unleashes a flurry of punches alongside other characters from ARMS.

As a background character

Spring Man appears on the screen in the background of Spring Stadium. He also appeared in Min Min's reveal trailer where he is first seen knocking out Byte & Barq on Spring Stadium and cheering himself on his victory. He then spots the Smash invitation letter and excitedly grabs it, only to be knocked out by Ribbon Girl before the invitation is ultimately claimed by Min Min.

Spirit

Spring Man also appears as an Ace-class primary spirit.

In Adventure Mode: World of Light, Spring Man is presumably one of the countless spirits captured by Galeem during his takeover of the universe. Spring Man's spirit is located in the northern city section of The Light Realm.

Spring Man uses a Mii Brawler puppet fighter wearing the Spring Man Mask and Outfit and is fought on the Boxing Ring stage. During the battle, the Mii Brawler's punches, elbow attacks, and jumping increase in power, referencing the punching and jumping gameplay mechanic of ARMS.

Trivia

• With his debut in June 2017, Spring Man is the newest Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
• Spring Man is the second Assist Trophy to also appear in a fighter's Final Smash, the first being Riki.
• Spring Man is the only Assist Trophy to come from a universe containing only DLC fighters.
• Spring Man and Twintelle are the first DLC Spirit Board Spirits to appear in the World of Light and on the regular Spirit Board.
• Spring Man is the third character to have held a Smash invitation in a character reveal trailer without becoming a playable character, behind Pete and Sothis.
  • Of these, Spring Man is the only Assist Trophy to do this.
• Spring Man and Waluigi are the only Assist Trophies in Ultimate to use an English voice actor in all regions. However, because Waluigi's voice clips are only in grunts, Spring Man is the only Assist Trophy to speak English in all regions. This is accurate to ARMS, where Spring Man only speaks one language across all versions of the game.
  • If Assist Trophies that were cut from Ultimate are counted, Kat & Ana and Saki Amamiya share these distinctions as well.
• Even though Spring Man became part of a universe with a playable character in version 8.0.0, the Assist Trophy menu in Training still lists him with the first-party Assist Trophies without a playable fighter.
• Spring Man is the only Assist Trophy to appear in the animated portion of a reveal trailer.
• As with all Assist Trophies, Spring Man appears as a profile icon. He initially had the gray color which is shared with other Assist Trophies from universes lacking a fighter, but as of version 8.0.0, the color was changed to yellow to reflect the ARMS universe now having a fighter.
• Even though Spring Man has a spirit battle, he does not appear as an enemy Assist Trophy in it, instead being represented by the Mii Brawler clad in his costume. This makes him the one of two Assist Trophies not to appear in a battle pertaining to his own spirit, with the other being Black Knight.
