GENESIS 6 was a supermajor tournament and the 6th edition of the GENESIS tournament series. It took place in Oakland, California, from February 1st to the 3rd, 2019. The event featured singles and doubles tournaments for Super Smash Bros., Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and was a major event for Rivals of Aether and Splatoon 2. GENESIS 6 also featured side events for Slap City, Magical Drop III, Dance Dance Revolution Extreme, and Windjammers. It was notably the first supermajor tournament for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Super Smash Bros. 64 Doubles

The rules for Super Smash Bros. 64 doubles differed from the usual doubles rules. There were two doubles tournaments, one in which Kirby and Pikachu were banned (ZPK) and one in which all characters were legal.

GENESIS 6 used the patch that was currently live on January 18th, 2019, which is 1.2.1. Piranha Plant, who was updated into the game in the week prior to the tournament, is not available in the tounament.

Seeding Controversy

A week before the tournament, many people started to complain about the terrible seeding of many players, especially European players such as Glutonny and cyve. Even after GENESIS 6 announced bracket feedback, many still complained that the seeding was inaccurate and should be redone. In response to these complaints, Leffen had messaged GENESIS 6's seeders, telling them to change the seeds. However, not only did the seeders refuse, but they also insulted the European Smash scene - infamously comparing them to penguins - and other smashers such as NAKAT. Seeder ALT messaged on Discord "so if 500 penguins entered a tournament in antarctica and i won it should i be a top 10 seed?" This has created massive backlash on Twitter, with people complaining to GENESIS 6 to fire their seeders. In response to all this backlash, Bear has stated that he was working on adjusting the seeding, and apologized for the rude behavior the seeders have shown.

As a result of the drama, the penguins insult has since become an internet meme, with Smashers such as Leffen and Bear changing their profile picture into penguins, and Bear promising to wear a penguin onesie at GENESIS 6. Even Nintendo joined in, with the Nintendo UK VS Twitter account tweeting "Best of luck to all the European Super #SmashBrosUltimate players at @Genesis_Smash this weekend!" with a picture of four King Dededes on Battlefield form Summit.

Trivia

• This was Mew2King's worst performance in over 13 years of Melee singles (without forfeiting), placing 33rd. This also marks the first time he has failed to make top 32 without forfeiting.
• This was Armada's worst performance in any Smash game, discounting disqualifications. Armada placed 97th in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at this tournament.
  • This was also Armada's first time attending a GENESIS event without entering Melee singles.
• This stands as Shroomed's worst placing at a Melee tournament, placing 97th.
• All 3 singles grand finals (Smash 64, Melee, Ultimate) featured one of the Electric Mouse Pokémon (Pichu and Pikachu).
  • This tournament also marked the highest ever placing of a Pikachu main at a supermajor national with Axe placing 2nd, before Axe's first place finish at Smash Summit 8 four months later.
• This tournament marks the currently best placing of aMSa at a supermajor with 4th place, also making it the highest ever supermajor placing of a Yoshi main.
• This is currently the only Melee tournament to have over 1,000 entrants in 2019.
