Magicant (マジカント, Magicant) is a stage in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In Smash for 3DS, it is Ness and Lucas's home stage, and it is where Ness is fought when being unlocked. The stage is unlocked along with him.
Stage layout
The stage consists of four pink clouds which act as semisoft platforms: a main, large one in the middle, two smaller elevated ones near the sides, and a small one near the bottom.
Dungeon Man sometimes appears under the stage, slowly walking from one site to the other, with only his head being visible and acting as a moving platform. While he is under the middle platform, the small platform near the bottom disappears.
Several elements also occasionally appear on the middle and left platforms:
- a tree, which acts as a static soft platform.
- a Mobile Sprout which walks back and forth, acting as a soft platform.
- the Sky Runner, which quickly drops down, remains suspended above the stage for a while and quickly rises back up into the sky. It is completely solid.
- a tomato or an octopus statue which act as solid obstacles. They appear suddenly on a platform and slowly sink into it until they fall down. Characters hit by them while they fall take 20% damage. Attacking the tomato enough makes it break into pieces, while attacking and/or standing on the octopus statue makes it sink faster. If they fall on Dungeon Man's head, the tomato breaks, while the octopus statue will just abruptly disappear.
Flying Men sometimes appear on the right platform, in front of the shell-shaped house. If a character walks by him, the Flying Man will fight alongside them, akin to an Assist Trophy. The Flying Man can be defeated by other characters by knocking him off the stage or inflicting enough damage (if the latter happens, the Flying Man lies on the ground, flashes and disappears): following this, a small tombstone spawns in the background, in front of the house; after some time, another Flying Man will spawn in the same location, repeating the process. After five Flying Men have been defeated, they will not spawn for the rest of the match.
Occasionally in the background of this stage, a "rip" in the sky opens and shows various points in Ninten's and Ness's adventures in their respective games:
- Ninten outside his house with his dog, Mick.
- Ninten on the roof of Twinkle Elementary School meeting Lloyd.
- Ness and Paula traveling in Threed with citizens and enemy zombies in the area.
- Ness, Paula, Jeff and Poo at the Lumine Hall sanctuary with the scrolling text on the wall reading, "I'm Ness...". The text, however, has a different font than in EarthBound.
- Ness, Paula, Jeff and Poo walking near the Phase Distorter 2 in Saturn Valley before their departure to fight Giygas.
The rip does not occur when playing Local Wireless or Online.
Ω form
The middle platform is extended and is the only platform present. Other events such as the Flying Men and Mobile Sprout are gone. The little shell houses are still there and the sky rip showing Ness' and Ninten's past adventures still happen.
Origin
This stage is primarily based on Magicant from Mother (later released outside Japan as EarthBound Beginnings), but also contains various elements from EarthBound as well.
In Mother, Magicant is a mysterious land made of pink clouds and light green rivers, and it is where Queen Mary resides. The main goal of the game is gathering the Eight Melodies around the countryside and singing the full song to Queen Mary, upon which it is revealed that Queen Mary is the embodiment of the consciousness of Maria. She then recalls that she raised Giegue, the main antagonist, and the melody was the lullaby she would sing to him. Magicant, which existed only in her mind, then disappears along with her. In this stage, the design of Magicant is retained; however, Queen Mary's castle is notably absent.
In Earthbound, Magicant is a surreal land in Ness's mind and is accessed by collecting the Eight Melodies. Ness has to travel through it in order to defeat all evil in his mind. In this stage, the only element from EarthBound's Magicant is the giant tomato that occasionally appears.
Five Flying Men inhabit Magicant in both games: they are humanoid bird-like creatures which Ninten and Ness can recruit to help them fight against enemies while in Magicant. They are said to represent Ness's and Ninten's courage. When a Flying Man is killed in battle, a tombstone with a cross will appear next to their home, and another will appear for every Flying Man killed until all five are dead. In this stage, the design of their house is based on the EarthBound version.
In EarthBound, Ness's progress through areas was sometimes impeded by statues shaped like octopi, and the only way to get rid of them was by using the Octopus Eraser Machine item invented by Apple Kid. The North American localization of EarthBound replaced the octopus statues with large pencil statues, though this change does not carry over to non-Japanese versions of SSB4.
Mobile Sprouts are enemies in EarthBound, appearing early in the game. They are walking bipedal sprouts which can summon more of themselves during battle.
The Sky Runner is a vehicle built by Dr. Andonuts, Jeff's father. Initially used to rescue Ness and Paula from Threed's graveyard, the group later reuses the ship in order to travel to Winters to meet up with Dr. Andonuts again.
Dungeon Man is the dungeon form of Brick Road, created with help from Dr. Andonuts. In EarthBound, he acts as both a visitable dungeon and as a traveling companion in the Scaraba desert.
Note that in EarthBound, the octopus statues, Mobile Sprouts, the Sky Runner, and Dungeon Man have no relationship at all to Magicant.

Trivia
- Magicant is the first EarthBound stage to be based on a location from Mother.
- A portion of the back of the Sky Runner is missing.
- If Cloud uses Omnislash, the void of this stage can easily be seen on the upper portion of the screen.
- In for 3DS, Magicant is rather notorious for its numerous glitches:
- If Kirby uses Final Cutter on the very edge of the Sky Runner, he will begin rapidly moving back and forward. This was fixed in update 1.0.5.
- If the player grabs a Flying Man in Training Mode, and pauses during a throw, the Flying Man will be stuck inside the character. This can lead to further glitches, such as opponents also being trapped inside the character. This was also fixed in update 1.0.5.
- Characters don't have shadows when they are on the small platform below the main stage.
- In both Ness's unlock battle and in the All-Star Mode, the Flying Men do not spawn.
- Flying Men were originally intended to be in 3D (with both a 3D model and a 2D sprite developed), but the 2D sprite was chosen. Masahiro Sakurai stated, in a weekly issue of Famitsu magazine, that the 2D sprite was chosen to lessen strain on the 3DS hardware. [1]
- While the unused 3D model was completely removed from the game during development, Sakurai stated it was later recycled during development of DLC and became a costume for the Mii Brawler.
