Salem is an American smasher from New Jersey currently residing in Florida who mains Zero Suit Samus in Brawl, Zelda in Project M, and Bayonetta in Smash 4. He is considered to have been the best Brawl Zero Suit Samus in the world when he was active, and was infamous for his incredible usage of Zero Suit Samus's Power Suit Pieces to rack up damage at the beginning of matches. He became known for his surprising victory at Apex 2013, one of the most prestigious Brawl tournaments in the United States.
In Smash 4, he is widely considered to be one of the best Bayonetta players in the world (alongside CaptainZack), having taken sets off of players such as ZeRo, Nairo, Ally, MkLeo, Larry Lurr, Abadango, Kameme, and Marss.
Salem is currently ranked 13th on the Panda Global Rankings and 3rd and 6th on the New Jersey Smash 4 Power Rankings and Tristate Brawl Power Rankings, respectively. Due to his aforementioned dominance at Apex 2013, he was signed in CLASH Tournaments as a top professional player.
At Collision XIV, Salem became the 15th player to take a set off of ZeRo and the first to double eliminate him in tournament outside of Grand Finals.
Tournament history
Brawl
Before playing in the offline scene, he gained fame on the All is Brawl ladder as an incredible Wi-Fi player, dominating the ladder with Zero Suit Samus. When he finally did enter an offline tournament, he made a large splash in his offline debut and got 5th in his first tournament, Concentrate II, where he defeated Nicole, Jbandrew, Will, and Kingtoon. He made more news a few months later at Apex 2012; while he did not advance very far in bracket, placing only 33rd, he managed to take a set off of Nick Riddle, who was then considered to be the best Zero Suit Samus player in the USA.
Throughout 2012, Salem continued to enter tournaments and place well, but never actually won or gathered much public attention until a dominating performance at Apex 2013, where he came out of nowhere to take first place. In his march to victory, he defeated top players such as mikeHAZE, Mr. R, Otori (the Apex 2012 champion), Dojo, Mikeneko, and Mew2King in both winners' and grand finals, the latter of which has been considered to be one of the most intense sets witnessed in Brawl tournament play. In the grand finals set, both players took the other down to the last stock and last match, before Salem eventually won after a long, drawn-out war of attrition. This shocked the world, as he had not only won one of the most prestigious Brawl tournaments ever with a character who wasn't considered top tier, but had done so without winning any local tournaments in his region prior to the event.
At Apex 2014, Salem placed 1st in his pool by defeating Mekos, and defeated fellow Zero Suit Samus main V115 before losing to ESAM in winners'. He proceeded to defeat Pwii and Koolaid before losing to ADHD 1-2 in a close set, placing 9th overall and outplacing Nick Riddle once again.
Project M
Salem has dabbled with Project M maining Zelda. At Apex 2014 he made it into bracket, but lost to Eli right away. He then beat Vectorman before falling to Atomsk getting 33rd place. At SKTAR 3 he made a long run through losers beating Ringworm, NinjaLink, DA Wes, Internet Explorer, MVD, Porkchops, and Larry Lurr before losing to ZeRo to place in the top 16.
Smash 4
When Smash 4 came out Salem started playing Sheik as well as Zero Suit Samus. His first major Smash 4 tournament was at Apex 2015, but he didn't do well, failing to get out of pools after being DQed in winners and losing to falln in losers finals of his pool. After that poor performance he did well at Tri-State regionals getting 9th place at KTAR XII. At EVO 2015 he made it into day 2 on losers side before losing to Tyrant. He also placed 7th at SKTAR 4 and 2nd at KTAR XVII, picking up Bayonetta when she came out.
Salem finally had his breakout performance in Smash 4 when he won Collision XIV by double-eliminating ZeRo 3-2 in winners quarters and losers semis, then Nairo 3-0 in losers finals, and finally won the tournament by beating Tweek 3-0 and 3-2 in grand finals. He then attended Smashadelphia II where he defeated Sinji 3-1, Mr.E 3-0, and 6WX 3-0 to take the tournament. He then traveled to Florida where he competed at Smash Conference LXVII where he defeated dyr 2-0, Fatality 2-0, and Mew2King 3-0 to make it to grand finals winners side. In grand finals Mew2King reset the bracket 1-3 against Salem, but Salem took the tournament by winning the second set 3-2.
He later traveled to Michigan for The Big House 6. Before the event itself, Salem entered Little Big House 2 where he defeated Shogun 2-1 to make it out of pools. In bracket, he defeated Kameme 2-0, 6WX 2-1, Dath 2-1, and Abadango 2-0 and 2-1 to win the tournament. At The Big House 6, he defeated MJG 2-1 and Rich Brown 2-0 to make it out of Round 2 pools. In top 32 he lost to Dabuz 0-3 in winners and defeated Kameme 3-2 in losers before falling to Nairo 1-3 and finishing at 9th place.
At Smash Conference LXVIII, Salem fell to Saj 1-2 in Bayonetta dittos. He then made an extensive losers bracket run defeating Child 2-1, Rideae 2-0, LordMix 2-1, 8BitMan 2-0, Saj 3-2 in a rematch, and Manny 3-0 and 3-2 to win the event. Salem later returned to Michigan where he won Smashfield Weeklies 61, defeating Ryuga 2-1 in winners semis, falling to Ally 3-1 in winners finals, defeating Ryuga again 3-1 in losers finals, and defeating Ally 3-1 and 3-0 in two sets of grand finals. Two days later, he attended Rebirth IX where he defeated smasher1001 2-0 and LOE1 3-0 before falling to Zinoto 1-3 in winners finals. He then defeated Rayquaza07 3-0 in losers finals before resetting the bracket 3-2 against Zinoto, but ultimately losing the second set 2-3 and placing second.
The next event Salem entered was Olympus, where he defeated 6WX 2-1 to make top 8. In top 8, Salem defeated Larry Lurr 3-0 in winners semis but fell to Tweek 2-3 in winners finals. In losers finals, Salem defeated Larry Lurr again 3-2 before defeating Tweek 3-0 in both sets of grand finals to take home first place. He then entered KTAR XIX, where he defeated Gomamugitya 2-0 to make it out of pools. In top 48, he defeated False 2-0 before losing to Tweek 1-3 in winners quarters. In losers bracket, he defeated Zinoto 3-2, WaDi 3-0, Samsora 3-2, Nairo 3-0, and MKLeo 3-1 before falling to ZeRo 1-3 in grand finals. At UGC Smash Open, Salem lost to ESAM 1-3 in winners finals of their pool and entered top 48 through the losers bracket. He then defeated Nero 3-2 and Vinnie 3-1 before losing to Kameme 1-3, finishing at a disappointing 17th place. To end out the year, Salem entered 2GGT: ZeRo Saga where he defeated Samsora 3-1 to make it to top 48. He was then defeated by Abadango 1-3 and elimnated by Dabuz 2-3, ending the year with another 17th place.
To start out 2017, Salem entered Smash Conference LXIX where he took first double eliminating Samsora 3-0 and 3-1 in winners finals and grand finals respectively. At GENESIS 4, Salem cruised through winners, defeating players such as 9B 2-0 before being upset by Elegant 0-2. In losers, he defeated You3 2-0 before being eliminated by ZeRo 2-3 at 25th place.

Trivia
- Salem had never won any tournaments (including locals) prior to his Apex 2013 victory; a similar scenario occured during the previous year with Apex 2012 being the first tournament Otori ever won.
