—Introduction Tagline

Lucina (ルキナ, Rukina) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4. She was confirmed during a live stream on the official Smash Bros. website on July 14, 2014, the day before Fire Emblem: Shin Monshō no Nazo: Hikari to Kage no Eiyū was released in 2010, and 2 days before Fire Emblem for the GBA was released in 2003. She is a moveset clone of Marth and also the first full clone officially revealed for SSB4.

How To Unlock

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS

  • Play 40 VS Matches.
  • Complete Classic Mode with Marth without using any continues.

Lucina is then battled in Arena Ferox.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

  • Clear Classic Mode on 5.5 Intensity or higher
  • Play 30 VS Matches.

Lucina then must be fought on Coliseum before being unlocked.

Moveset

Special Moves

In Super Smash Bros. 4, special moves can be swapped out for different variants. Lucina shares all of Marth's special moves, both regular ones and custom ones.

Special Move Basic Custom 1 Custom 2
Neutral Special Shield Breaker Storm Thrust Assault Dash
Side Special Dancing Blade Easy Combination Heavy Blade
Up Special Dolphin Slash Crescent Slash Dolphin Jump
Down Special Counter Easy Counter Iai Counter
Final Smash Critical Hit

Differences from Marth

Lucina's Falchion lacks a specific sweetspot in her attacks compared to Marth's Falchion, as seen in their attack animations.

Lucina is a clone of Marth, meaning her moveset and animations are primarily based off of his. In a Miiverse post, Sakurai explains that "even a small difference in abilities" gives a character their own roster slot, citing Lucina as an example[1]. It was later confirmed[2] that her character physics and moveset are "nearly identical" to Marth's. So far, the following differences have been seen:

  • Change Unlike Marth, her sword does not have a tipper hitbox (except down aerial), meaning every part of her sword will deal equal damage. Her sword trails also appropriately lack the accentuated tip, and are instead a full white blur.
  • Change Lucina's up tilt deals increased damage to opponents behind her.
  • Change Lucina's taunts are different than Marth's.
  • Change Lucina does a different pose during her Counter.
  • Change Her animation for Shield Breaker is different than Marth's.
  • Nerf Shield Breaker also does less damage than Marth's.
  • Buff Lucina is slightly smaller than Marth.
  • Nerf Lucina's range is shorter than Marth's.

Trophies

Trophy Descriptions

Lucina's regular trophy can be obtained by completing Classic Mode with her and her alternative trophy (3DS version only) can be obtained by completing All-Star mode with her.

Lucina (3DS)
Chrom's daughter and the future Princess of Ylisse. When she arrives from a doomed future seeking to prevent it from ever happening, she goes by the name Marth before her identity is revealed. She fights much like her adopted namesake, but more than just the tip of her sword is powerful.
Lucina (Wii U)
Chrom's daughter and the future Princess of Ylissee. When she arrives from a doomed future seeking to prevent it from ever happening, she goes by the name Marth before her identity is revealed. She fights much like her adopted namesake, but her entire blade is equally powerful instead of having a more powerful tip.
Lucina (Alt.)
Lucina's moves are much like Marth's, but there are subtle differences. With Marth, you need to try to hit with the tip of his sword, but Lucina's sword is equally powerful all along the blade. Her Shield Breaker move lets her attack opponents and break their shields at the same time. Charge it fully to shatter shields in one hit.

Trivia

  • Lucina was originally planned as an alternate costume for Marth[2], but was given her own character slot due to "the characteristics of their attacks" being different.
  • Although acting as a newcomer to Super Smash Bros., Lucina was not depicted as such on the front page of the Super Smash Bros. 4 Official Site; she was only given a small slot like the returning veterans. However, her profile page also displayed the word "newcomer" and the mobile site still gave Lucina a large slot like other newcomers.
    • Additionally, Lucina is the only unlockable character that is not grouped with the other unlockable characters on the official website and does not have a "???".
  • Robin and Lucina's trailer is the first one to reveal two newcomers and the second to reveal a veteran after Greninja's, and their trailer also marks the first reveal of a second newcomer from the same series (Fire Emblem).
  • Lucina's SSB4 official art is posed identically to official art of her disguised as Marth from Fire Emblem Awakening.
  • Lucina is the only unlockable character in both games who was officially revealed prior to the release of Super Smash Bros. 4 and the only unlockable to appear in the opening movie in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
  • Lucina is the only character officially revealed before the release of Super Smash Bros. 4 to not be playable in any demo of the game.
  • Lucina is the first female unlockable character in the Super Smash Bros. series (unless one counts Wendy O. Koopa).
