A starter stage is a stage that is available for Versus Mode play immediately after turning the game on for the first time; the player does not have to unlock that stage in order for it to be selectable.

In competitive play, the term also refers to neutral stages, or stages that can be chosen in the first game of a match. This is in contrast to counterpick stages that can only be chosen in games 2 and 3. For more information on this, see the Stage legality and Tournament legal articles.
