The Pitfall (おとしあなのタネ, Pitfall Seed) is an item that appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. 4 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It hails from the Animal Crossing series.

Origin[edit]

A player finds a Pitfall Seed in Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

In all games in the Animal Crossing series, pitfall seeds are items that can be found buried in the ground with the exception of New Horizons, which requires a crafting recipe for a pitfall seed. If the player or an animal walks over a buried pitfall seed, they will fall and be temporarily stuck in a hole. Players can dig up pitfall seeds and rebury them elsewhere, making it possible to pull "pranks" by setting traps for animals or other players to fall into. Unlike in Smash, buried pitfall seeds are visible in the form of a star-shaped mark on the ground, although they are indistinguishable from other buried items such as fossils.

Overview[edit]

When thrown, the Pitfall can bounces off walls until it touches the ground, which it then embeds itself into with no trace, waiting for an opponent to walk over it. The next opponent to walk onto its location will sustain damage and become buried. If nobody activates the Pitfall, it will despawn in a puff of smoke after 40 seconds. Characters on a solid platform will remain buried for the normal duration as determined how much damage they sustained, though characters on a fall-through platform will be spiked downwards through the platform after the "buried" animation has finished. When thrown, the Pitfall also has a hitbox, and if it hits a grounded opponent, it will activate on them, and bury them for even longer. When thrown at an airborne enemy or at an enemy hanging on an edge, the target is meteor smashed. Having multiple Pitfall items and planting them in the exact same spot can cause more damage than usual.

In Ultimate, Pitfalls will not bury downed characters (including if Olimar lands on one after his Final Smash), but the audience may still cheer as usual. Throwing a Pitfall on an already-buried character will cause a meteor effect, sending the character flying upwards with high knockback.

Trophies[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

The Pitfall item appears as a trophy in Super Smash Bros Brawl. It is obtained by completing 100-Man Brawl with any character.

Pitfall
NTSC A tricky little item you can bury. Any player who passes over it will drop into a hole. If you land in a pitfall, move the Control Stick quickly back and forth to escape, because until you do, you're completely defenseless. In Animal Crossing, this item also dropped passersby into holes. It was a thrill to bury one and wait for a visiting pal to stumble across it.

Pitfall
NTSC You can plant this in the ground as a trap against your enemies. If they set it off, they'll be rooted in place and at your mercy. If opponents are spending too much time in the air, throwing this at them can send them meteoring down to the ground—or better yet, right off the stage!

Trivia[edit]

  • In Brawl, if Wario strikes a buried Pitfall while riding on his Wario Bike (and is not wheelieing or taunting), he will be sent flying for a near certain KO. This is due to how Wario is considered grounded despite being unable to be buried or plunged, and so he takes the full effect of the planted Pitfall's fixed knockback value of a ludicrous 300 (designed for a long bury time). This knockback value is also why the crowd cheers when someone enters a Pitfall.
    • Likely in order to prevent this scenario in Ultimate, the Bury Immunity support spirit skill will completely negate damage and knockback from pitfall seeds, while with all other sources of burying, the burying attacks will simply deal the knockback they are programmed with rather than burying the opponent.
    • However, a similar trick works in Ultimate by exploiting Kirby's Stone. If a Pitfall is thrown at Kirby in his stone form on the ground that deals enough damage to break him out of it, he will be meteor smashed off the ground with enormous knockback, comparable to Jigglypuff's shield jump, virtually guaranteeing a KO if there is no ceiling above Kirby.
