GENESIS 3 (sometimes stylized as GEN3SIS) was the 3rd edition of the GENESIS tournament series. It took place in San Jose, California, on January 15th to 17th, 2016. The event hosted both singles and doubles tournaments for Super Smash Bros., Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U in addition to a "Smash Draft Melee Crew Battle", as part of a community Compendium. With 3,592 attendees across six tournaments, GENESIS 3 currently stands as one of the largest overall Smash tournaments to date, with over 1,000 entrants for both Melee and Smash 4, as well as the first Smash 64 tournament with over 200 entrants (238). On December 28th, 2015, it was announced by the GENESIS 3 staff that a seeding system would be implemented for both Melee and Smash 4 singles tournaments, which would allow 64 seeded players from Melee, and 32 from Smash 4 to bypass the first round of pools, by floating these players further in the bracket. The announcement was followed by immediate backlash from the community and many known tournament organizers, which expressed concerns regarding tournament integrity and the criteria for seeding those players. On December 29th, the GENESIS 3 staff made a formal announcement on Facebook detailing the reasoning behind the decision to seed players from both tournaments, while also announcing that it would no longer seed players for Smash 4, but keep the decision to seed players for Melee.

On January 8th, 2016, it was announced on Twitter that GENESIS 3 was partnered with Nintendo of America.

Tournament summary

Melee

GENESIS 3, like the two GENESIS events prior, featured another Armada vs. Mang0 grand finals. Mang0 arrived in grand finals following a lengthy losers' run; after losing to Axe in winners' quarters, he defeated Plup, Nintendude, PPMD, Axe, and Hungrybox to make it to losers' side of grand finals. After a 3-1 bracket reset, Armada emerged victorious in the second set 3-1, claiming his second GENESIS title.

Mew2King was notably upset by SFAT in winners' quarters and by Nintendude in losers' round of 12, finishing 9th.

Melee: S2J vs Abate

This portion of the Suite was played out because of S2J  losing to Abate  at The Big House 5, with the set infamously ending with the ceiling glitch. S2J won the set 4–2.

A set between Nintendude  and HugS  was also planned, but cancelled due to Nintendude opting to practice before facing Mew2King in bracket.

Additionally, a $1,000 money match between Leffen  and Westballz  was planned, but was cancelled, as Leffen was unable to attend GENESIS 3.
