Downloadable content
Downloadable content, usually abbreviated as DLC, is additional content available to download after the games' launch. DLC was first confirmed for Super Smash Bros. 4 in the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 50-Fact Extravaganza Nintendo Direct, and can be used to add new playable characters, stages, and even new features. Paid content can be found for purchase on the Nintendo eShop in the Wii U version, and in an in-game DLC shop in the 3DS version (as the eShop is a "full" app on the 3DS, it cannot be open at the same time as the game, regardless of model).
Super Smash Bros. 4
The following features are confirmed to appear as downloadable content in SSB4.
Updates
Updates to the game must be downloaded from the eShop with no extra cost, and usually fix bugs and other errors. Certain updates will also adjust game balance; changelogs for these can be found in the appropriate sections.
Characters
- Mewtwo (April 15th, 2015)
- Mewtwo was announced as the very first DLC character in the Super Smash Bros. series during the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 50-Fact Extravaganza on October 23rd, 2014. During a Nintendo Direct held on April 1st, 2015, Mewtwo's release date was revealed. On April 15th, 2015, Mewtwo became available as a free download to players who registered both versions of SSB4 on Club Nintendo before March 31st, 2015. - Future characters
- The announcement of the Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot, which was open until October 3rd, 2015, implies future DLC characters will be implemented beyond those listed above. Masahiro Sakurai has also stated that "several more characters" will be developed, and that they will be fanservice. [1]
In a similar vein to clone characters, DLC characters are recognized by being placed in their own area on the character select screen, regardless of which franchise they hail from. DLC characters that have not been purchased or otherwise obtained can still be encountered online, and their amiibo can still be used.
Stages
- Miiverse (June 14th, 2015)
- A stage based on the Miiverse application found on Wii U and 3DS consoles, it was confirmed in the 50-Fact Extravaganza that it would be added to the Wii U version of SSB4 in an update after release. It was made available for free on June 14th, 2015.
- Dream Land (64) (June 14th, 2015)

- The Duck Hunt stage was available in the Wii U version at launch as an unlockable stage; it was added to the 3DS version in a free update.
- Midgar (TBA)
- Midgar comes as a set with Cloud, because he is a 3rd party character.
It is possible, though rare, to play on a stage that has not been obtained while playing For Fun or For Glory.
Modes
- amiibo support (February 9th, 2015)
- The Wii U version of SSB4 supported amiibo at launch, but the 3DS version had the feature added via patch on February 9th.
- Tourney mode (July 31st, 2015)
- During the 50-Fact Extravaganza, it was confirmed that the Wii U version of SSB4 will contain a special mode that allows players to compete in and host tourneys online, in a similar vein to Mario Kart 8 tournaments but that it would not be ready at launch. Another part of this mode is an elimination style tournament mode that bears close resemblance to that of past Smash games. This type of tourney will only happen at certain times.
