The first set of paid DLC for SSB4, featuring Mewtwo and Mii Fighter costumes.

Downloadable content, usually abbreviated as DLC, is additional content available to download after the games' launch. DLC was first confirmed for Super Smash Bros. 4 in the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 50-Fact Extravaganza Nintendo Direct, and can be used to add new playable characters, stages, and even new features. Paid content can be found for purchase on the Nintendo eShop in the Wii U version, and in an in-game DLC shop in the 3DS version (as the eShop is a "full" app on the 3DS, it cannot be open at the same time as the game, regardless of model).

The following features are confirmed to appear as downloadable content in SSB4.

Updates

Updates to the game must be downloaded from the eShop with no extra cost, and usually fix bugs and other errors. Certain updates will also adjust game balance; changelogs for these can be found in the appropriate sections.

Characters

Pokémon (universe) Mewtwo Super Smash Bros. 4 (April 15th, 2015)
Mewtwo was announced as the very first DLC character in the Super Smash Bros. series during the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 50-Fact Extravaganza on October 23rd, 2014. During a Nintendo Direct held on April 1st, 2015, Mewtwo's release date was revealed. On April 15th, 2015, Mewtwo became available as a free download to players who registered both versions of SSB4 on Club Nintendo before March 31st, 2015. As of April 28th, 2015, Mewtwo is currently available for anyone to purchase.
EarthBound (universe) Lucas Super Smash Bros. 4 (June 14th, 2015)
Lucas was first confirmed to reappear in Super Smash Bros. 4 as a downloadable character alongside the reveal of Mewtwo's release date, during a Nintendo Direct held on April 1st, 2015. He was released on June 14th, 2015.
Fire Emblem (universe) Roy Super Smash Bros. 4 (June 14th, 2015)
Melee veteran Roy was leaked as DLC in datamining of the 1.0.6 and 1.0.8 updates. He was officially revealed by Sakurai during a Nintendo Direct on June 14th, 2015, and released shortly after on the same day.
Street Fighter (universe) Ryu Super Smash Bros. 4 (June 14th, 2015)
Newcomer Ryu from Capcom's Street Fighter series was leaked alongside Roy. Similarly, he was officially revealed by Sakurai during a Nintendo Direct on June 14th, 2015 and released shortly after on the same day. Ryu comes as a set with the stage Suzaku Castle.
  • Future characters
The announcement of the Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot, which is open until October 3rd, 2015, implies future DLC characters will be implemented beyond those listed above. Masahiro Sakurai has also stated that "several more characters" will be developed, and that they will be fanservice. [1]

In a similar vein to clone characters, DLC characters are recognized by being placed in their own area on the character select screen, regardless of which franchise they hail from.

Stages

Miiverse (universe) Miiverse Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (June 14th, 2015)
A stage based on the Miiverse application found on Wii U and 3DS consoles, it was confirmed in the 50-Fact Extravaganza that it would be added to the Wii U version of SSB4 in an update after release. It was made available for free on June 14th, 2015.
Kirby (universe) Super Smash Bros. Dream Land (64) Super Smash Bros. 4 (June 14th, 2015)
Street Fighter (universe) Suzaku Castle Super Smash Bros. 4 (June 14th, 2015)
Suzaku Castle comes as a set with Ryu.
Mario (universe) Super Smash Bros. Peach's Castle Super Smash Bros. 4 (July 31st, 2015)
The Legend of Zelda (universe) Super Smash Bros. Hyrule Castle Super Smash Bros. 4 (July 31st, 2015)

Modes

  • amiibo support Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (February 9th, 2015)
The Wii U version of SSB4 supported amiibo at launch, but the 3DS version had the feature added via patch on February 9th.
During the 50-Fact Extravaganza, it was confirmed that the Wii U version of SSB4 will contain a special mode that allows players to compete in and host tourneys online, in a similar vein to Mario Kart 8 tournaments but that it would not be ready at launch. Another part of this mode is an elimination style tournament mode that bears close resemblance to that of past Smash games. This type of tourney will only happen at certain times.
