Lip's Stick (リップステッキ, Lip Stick) is an item from the puzzle game Panel de Pon (released only in Japan), and is wielded by the main character, Lip. It appears as a usable item in Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Super Smash Bros. 4.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Lip's Stick is classified as a battering item with a very helpful side effect; when a character is struck by the item, a flower which does continual damage sprouts on their head. Tilt and smash attacks cause the item to release "dust" that has the same effect of flower growth, but doesn't do as much damage. Repeated use of the item, as well as tilts and smashes with the item, cause the flower to grow bigger, making it longer lasting and thus deal more damage. The item itself, however, has somewhat average knockback, and the item has a limited amount of dust with which to grow flowers; once the dust runs out, the item becomes practically useless. The flower on top of a player's head can also be shaken off by repeated smashing of the Control Stick. The only attack with Lip's Stick that does not cause a flower to grow is Mewtwo's dash attack.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Lip's Stick was first confirmed to return in Super Smash Bros. Brawl when it was shown in a Smash Bros. DOJO!! update concerning Munchlax. It behaves the same way in Brawl as it does in Melee.

The effect of having a flower on the player's head continuously is added as an option in Special Brawl.

Multiple attacks have the ability to attach flowers to the opponent's head; among these are Crazy Hand's throw, and Jigglypuff's Rest if it is not fatal. Luigi's Negative Zone can also produce a flower on an enemy's head, along with other effects.

Lip's Stick cannot give a flower effect to members of the Fighting Alloy Team, although it still deals a considerable amount of knockback when used on them. If the move is used while a Gardevoir is out, the move will backfire and instantly give the user a flower condition.

Origin

Lip's Stick comes from the Japanese game Panel de Pon. Panel de Pon is a puzzle game that was also released in North America and Europe under the name Tetris Attack, where the characters were changed to Yoshi's Island characters. The protagonist of Panel de Pon is the flower fairy Lip, who is seen holding the Lip's Stick (referred to in-game as simply はなの つえ "flower wand") on the title screen and in the background of puzzles. In Panel de Pon, if the player manages to get a combo or clear four or more blocks at the same time, a "garbage" block would drop on the opponent's side, making it harder to win. Right before the garbage block is dropped, a flower symbols flies over to the opponent's side. Then the block is dropped. In Super Smash Bros. games since Melee, a player can pick up the flower that Lip was holding. When a player attacks another player with it, a flower appears on the opponent's head and causes damage for however long the flower stays on. The flower on the opponent's head doing damage could be a reference to the garbage blocks, as they both make the match harder to win. [1]

Trivia

• In Brawl, when Mario is afflicted by Lip's Stick and does his side taunt, the flower will be on Mario's hat, but Mario will still get damaged.
• In the European release of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, the trophy for Lip's Stick erroneously identifies it as originating in Panel de Pon's Western counterpart, Tetris Attack (where neither Lip nor her wand appeared).
• Lip's Stick's name is an obvious pun on the lipstick cosmetic.
