Petey Piranha (ボスパックン, Boss Packun), is an unplayable character in Brawl and only playable in Boss Battles via hacking. He has no specific voice actor, usually letting out bellowing roars instead.
When playable, Petey Piranha cannot move or jump, and only has access to his sliding cage moves. As a result, Petey Piranha completely loses to any character with a projectile or counterattack, and with some being capable of immediately going to the edge of the stage, he has some of the only true 100:0 matchups in the Smash franchise and is arguably the worst character in the game.
Attributes
While his HP is abnormally high compared to most bosses in Boss Battles, Petey Piranha is effectively a Cage attack simulator, having no other usable move. While they are wide-reaching and deal respectable damage, they can be easily shielded and responded to with attacks. If a character has a projectile, they can easily roll through a Cage attack towards the edge of the stage and spam it until Petey Piranha goes down, unable to damage the player. Likewise, a counterattack from characters like Marth can be timed to continuously hit Petey Piranha with zero counterplay available. Given a majority of the cast has tools to easily defeat Petey Piranha, he has very few even matchups.

Moveset
Like all bosses, Ridley's moves are inputted using a set of commands with a GameCube controller, chiefly with the D-Pad. Move names are taken from the Japanese strategy guide for Brawl. Damage varies by difficulty, the following being taken from the game's files. Samus's Grapple Beam restores AI control.
Image | Move | Damage | Input | Description |
---|---|---|---|---|
Jump Ready | None | + | Petey Piranha prepares to jump. However, the jump doesn't actually happen, or does the whole charging animation, making the move effectively a non-damaging taunt. | |
Roar | None | + | Petey Piranha roars before t-posing. This move slightly boosts the following attacks in speed, damage (by about 10%), and knockback (though the change is subtle). When performed by a human, it is currently unknown if it makes his attacks stronger. | |
Left Cage Smash | 17% | + | Petey Piranha smashes the cage in his left hand, which is the right cage from the screen's point of view. The attack is highly preventable but relatively swift and long-ranged. Damage varies from 12% (Easy in Boss Battles without boosts) to 40% (Intense in the Subspace Emissary after being boosted by Roar). Additionally, it KOs over 100% on the lower difficulties, but around 60% on Intense. | |
Right Cage Smash | 17% | + | Petey Piranha smashes the cage in his right hand, which is the left cage from the screen's point of view. The mechanic is exactly the same as Left Cage Smash. | |
Self-Destruct | None | KOs Petey Piranha. |
Codes
Like all Brawl bosses, Petey Piranha can be accessed using a Gecko code that enables debug mode controls for Player 3 in Boss Battles. He is encountered randomly without additional external modifications, meaning other bosses need to be defeated or forced to self-destruct with their own codes to reach Petey Piranha's stage. The following codes are for the NTSC-U version of Brawl and both codes must be on.

In competitive play
Tier placement and history
Because Petey Piranha is only playable through hacking, he's banned by default in all competitive Brawl tournaments. While some boss characters have arguments to be legalised, Brawl's bosses have unique challenges that make them particularly unlikely cases. They do not conform to the usual ruleset, are exclusive to Boss Battles and thus their specific stage, are subject to Boss Battles's random boss selection without further modifications, and have varying difficulty levels that would require rulings to decide on them properly. This boils down to a very clunky experience that would likely end up delaying tournaments due to the length of time it takes for them to be set up. Furthermore, Samus's Grapple Beam can reset the controls of Brawl bosses, which could cause further ruling issues. Ergo, Petey Piranha has seen little to no competitive experimentation outside of casual matches.
In The Subspace Emissary
Petey Piranha appears as the first boss of The Subspace Emissary at the Midair Stadium, capturing Peach and Zelda. Mario/Kirby defeat Petey Piranha and rescue one of the princesses before a Subspace Bomb blows up the arena.
Trivia
- Petey Piranha has the least usable moves of any Brawl boss.
