Isabelle (しずえ, Shizue) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The secretary for the player character in Animal Crossing: New Leaf and de facto mascot of the Animal Crossing franchise, she was announced as a newcomer at the end of the September 13th, 2018 Nintendo Direct. Despite sharing several moves with Villager, Isabelle has a unique moveset and is not an Echo Fighter.
Attributes
- Isabelle's moveset shares a few similarities to Villager, such as a move similar to Villager's dash attack, the use of Pocket, and grabbing with a net, but she is otherwise a unique fighter, and all of her animations are fully unique.
- She wears her Spring/Summer outfit by default, but can also wear her Autumn/Winter outfit, and a red outfit based on her brother Digby.
Known moveset
Standard Attacks
- up tilt: swings a broom over her head
- jab: whacks the opponent with a squeaky hammer
- Her dash attack is similar to Villager's, but with an empty jar instead of a potted sapling. The jar is heavier, so it falls faster and doesn't go as far
- Like Villager, she can also grab and throw opponents with a net.
- forward tilt: swings a pink umbrella in front of her
- Her down tilt is the same as Villager's where she pulls a weed out of the ground
Smash Attacks
- Her forward smash fires a party popper forward.
- Her up smash erects a do-not-enter sign in front of her while blowing her whistle.
- Her down smash splashes water to the front and back with a bucket, like Inkling's Slosher.
Aerial Attack
- Her neutral aerial twirls pom-poms around her body.
- Like Villager, she uses a slingshot and turnips for her other aerials. Her turnips are not randomized, with the up aerial always being two, and the down aerial always being three.
Special Moves
- Isabelle can use Pocket, seemingly identical to its function as Villager's neutral special.
- Isabelle makes use of a Fishing Rod for her side special, grabbing opponents and pulling them closer to her before throwing them. Fishing Rod can also aid in Isabelle's recovery, presumably as a tether recovery.
- Her down special Lloid Trap involves burying Lloid as a sort of landmine that drags opponents into the air when triggered.
- Isabelle's up special, Balloon Trip, has her sitting on a flying swing attached to a pair of bunny-ear balloons.
- Her Final Smash, Dream Town Hall, catches opponents under the construction of the Town Hall before it blows up with the enemies inside, behaving like Villager's Dream Home.
Taunts
- A taunt where Isabelle waves her arms and jumps for joy, based off of the Complete emote.
- A taunt where Isabelle claps in place, based off of the Delight emote.
- A taunt where Isabelle cheers and raises her hand.
On-screen appearance
- Isabelle comes out of the Town Hall cheering, before it shrinks into a puff of smoke.

Trivia
- Isabelle is the fourth character to be announced in Ultimate that was previously featured as a Mii costume in Super Smash Bros. 4, the others being Inkling, Chrom, and King K. Rool. Additionally, she uses a party popper in her moveset, which was used in her Mii costume in place of an arm cannon.
- Isabelle is also the third character to become playable after previously appearing as an Assist Trophy, after Little Mac and Dark Samus.
- The Nintendo Direct that revealed Isabelle as a playable fighter was supposed to air on September 6th, 2018. However, an earthquake struck Hokkaidō, Japan that day. Its aftermath prompted Nintendo to postpone the Direct—and by extension, news of Isabelle's inclusion in Ultimate—by one week, out of respect for those affected by the tremor. This makes Isabelle the only playable character in the series' history whose reveal was explicitly delayed for any given reason.
- Isabelle's reveal trailer initially appeared to be a reveal trailer for a new Nintendo Switch installment of the Animal Crossing series, and was followed by an actual teaser trailer confirming such a title for 2019.
- Tom Nook is even seen watching Isabelle's own trailer on his computer, before telling the audience he has to get back to work, in order to prepare for the upcoming game.
- In her reveal trailer, Isabelle opens a letter inviting her to join Smash Bros. that is enclosed in an envelope with a wax seal in the shape of the Super Smash Bros. logo. This is a callback to a similar letter found by Villager in his mailbox in the first trailer for Super Smash Bros. 4.
- There is an error on Isabelle's page on the Smash Bros. Ultimate site where her Animal Crossing symbol is the same color as Villager's (a dark green), instead of chartreuse, her background color.
- Isabelle is the first newcomer in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to be from a franchise that had their first character introduced in Super Smash Bros. 4 . Her inclusion also makes Animal Crossing the first franchise with a single character in Smash 4 to receive another playable character, the other being Street Fighter.
- Strangely, Isabelle's reveal trailer shows that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is still Rating Pending, even though the rating had already been revealed to be rated E10+. Whether this is an error on Nintendo's part or ESRB's part remains to be seen, though European trailers keep the PEGI 12 rating.
- In a Famitsu column, Sakurai noted that because Isabelle and Villager have significantly different proportions and personalities, it was not possible for Isabelle to be Villager's Echo Fighter, and therefore, she has completely unique animations.[1]
