Starter character

A starter character is a character who is already available for play immediately after turning the game on for the first time; the player does not have to unlock, challenge, or download that character in order for him or her to be selectable (as one must do to select unlockable characters and downloadable characters).

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Trivia
- Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox and Pikachu are the only playable characters to remain starter in every installment they appear in.
- Samus is also the only female character to remain a starter in every installment she appears in.
- Yoshi is also the only overall sole representative to remain a starter in every installment he appears in.
- Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are the first two installments in the series, where all of the original 12 characters appear as starters.
- Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS has the same number of starter characters as the number of total characters in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the only installment to have less starters than the previous game.
- Ultimate also has the second lowest amount of starters, at only 12 (and the 12 are all 12 characters in the Original 12).
