Peach (ピーチ, Pīchi) was confirmed to be a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4 on September 12, 2013.[1] This is a day before the anniversary of Super Mario Bros., the landmark game in which she debuted. She is among the first wave of compatible amiibo figures. Peach will be voiced by Samantha Kelly.

Changes from Brawl

With the exception to some minor tweaks, Peach seems largely unchanged from Brawl. However, many new animations accompany her established attacks in the form of hearts, rainbows, and magic sparkles. Whether these changes are purely aesthetic or indicate that her reach has been extended remains to be seen.

  •   Floating now has sparkles emit from the bottom of her dress, like in Melee. [3]
  •   The second hit deals more damage (6% opposed to 4%).
  •   Its knockback has been drastically increased, being able to KO.
  •   This move has magic sparkles to accompany it.
  •   Peach's numerous tools (frying pan, tennis racket and golf club) come out in a set order.
  •   Each one of them is stronger, dealing more damage and knockback.
  •   Peach performs a different pose when using them compared to previous games, slightly increasing their range.
  •   Up smash now spawns a ribbon around Peach, with an apparent increase in both horizontal and vertical reach. [4]
  •   Down smash has been improved. [2]
  •   Its knockback has almost been entirely reverted back to its Melee form.
  •   It has a greater amount of possible hits (5 opposed to 4).
  •   It now has the ability to trap opponents into it, allowing each further hit to connect with very limited failure.
  •   However, each hit deals less damage (3% opposed to 5%).
  •   Its's been reverted to its Melee form in terms of damage and knockback.
  •   It has greater reach, allowing Peach to strike opponents above and under her as well.
  •   However, it is much slower.
  •   A new up aerial has been granted to Peach. It generates a rainbow using a motion resembling Zelda's up tilt.
  •   It is faster and has greater reach, allowing Peach to approach opponents above her more safely.
  •   However, it has less knockback.
  •   They deal less damage and knockback.
  •   Due to their reduced knockback, their potential to combo into other moves has been increased. [2]
  •   In addition, they are a little faster.
  •   It now has the ability to hit an opponent's shield.
  •   It is much faster, with greatly reduced lag.
  •   However, it deals less damage (10% opposed to 15%).
  •   It deals considerably less damage (maximum of 20%, down from 40%).
  •   Opponents' sleep duration has been sharply reduced.
  •   In spite of that, it summons three giant peaches instead of many smaller ones. Each one heals 20%, up from 5%.

Like Mario and Luigi, Peach's facial structure appears more as it does in the Super Mario franchise than it has in past installments. Additionally, her dress has been made more stylized and brighter in color. Her hair color appears to be lighter than it was in Brawl as well. The ring on her hand now has an opal gem that matches her other blue gems: the broach on her chest and the one on her crown. Also, her running animation is now based on her running animation from Super Mario 3D World. The underside of her skirt is now darkened, obscuring her undergarments. Like the other characters, Peach is also much more expressive.

Special Moves

In Super Smash Bros. 4, special moves can be swapped out for different variants, but Peach's have yet to be seen. Peach retains all of her original special moves and her Final Smash. These are Peach's special moves:

  • Neutral Special: Toad: Peach equips her Toad Retainer as a shield. He absorbs the amount of damage from the attack and immediately releases it back.[1]
  • Side Special: Peach Bomber: she propels herself forward by thrusting her hip. It seems to be significantly faster than in previous installments.
  • Up Special: Peach Parasol: performs an upward jump and simultaneously pulls out her parasol, jabbing those above her in the process. It can then be used as a directional glide.
  • Down Special: Vegetable: Peach plucks a turnip from the ground as she does in Super Mario Bros. 2. She can then throw it.[6]

Taunts

  • Takes out and twirls her parasol. She says "sweet" as she does this.
  • Dances in a taunting manner as little music notes flutter around her. She sings a little tune similar to "Ring Around the Rosie".
  • Spins around once. She then winks and points with her index finger in a somewhat bent posture and says "Uh-huh!"

On-Screen Appearance

Appears spinning out of a shower of hearts, then winks and poses with her parasol saying "Hi!".

Victory Fanfare

A flourished remix directly from Brawl based on the sound clip that would play when Mario reaches the end of a level in Super Mario Bros. It is shared with Mario, Luigi, and Dr. Mario.

Trivia

  • Ike, Lucario, Diddy Kong, Charizard, King Dedede, and Peach were the only returning characters confirmed before E3 2014 to not be playable in any demo version of Super Smash Bros. 4.
  • As of version 1.0.1 of the 3DS version of the game, a bug exists where using Peach's Vegetable move in For Glory mode may rarely trigger an automatic ban for "dishonest play".[7] It is unclear what the cause of the glitch is, but the main theories involve the player being flagged as having an illegitimate item. Nintendo has acknowledged the glitch and aims to patch the game to resolve the issue within one week of September 15th.[8]
