Super Smash Bros. Ultimate winners Japan Asimo

Sumabato SP 51 was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate supermajor held in Daito City, Osaka, Kansai on September 22nd, 2024.

Tournament summaryEdit

Although it featured slightly less entrants than its last entry, the event had more talent as it featured 6 players ranked in the LumiRank 2024.1 top 20, 10 other players ranked in the top 50, and a slew of other notable Japanese talent that were ranked in the top 100. As such, ignoring the crossover event KOWLOON 9 with Sumabato, this tournament became the first Sumabato event since Sumabato X Final to become a supermajor.

This tournament is best known for finally being Asimo's long-awaited major/supermajor win, especially after he placed second at three majors/supermajors by losing to either acola or Miya. As the 6th seed, his path to victory featured him defeating #3 Snow (Upset Factor 2) and facing off against #1 acola in Grand Finals with acola being on the losers side after he lost to #9 Akakikusu (UF 6) prior to top 8. Although the set came close, Asimo was able to defeat acola 3-2 in a last-hit scenario (UF 4), which was only Asimo's second win over acola. Asimo's win at the event marks the first time ever a Ryu player won a major in any Smash game. It's also the first major win for a fighting game character main since Riddles’ win at Collision 2023, one year and a half ago. Conversely, this was the third Japanese major/supermajor where acola placed 2nd, further extending his major win drought.

This event was Maister's final event in his two-month stay in Japan, and was by far the strongest performance of his trip. Not only did he 2-0 or 3-0 everyone in his path aside from a game loss to Maesuma TO Maedakun and his set losses to acola, but he was able to defeat and upset many of Japan's best players as the 16th seed, including getting his revenge on #4 Raru (UF 4) after having lost to him twice at Maesuma'JAPAN West 24 and convincingly defeating #2 Hurt (UF 6), including a 3-stock in the second game. This event became Maister's first top 4 finish at a supermajor since Collision 2023 over a year ago. In addition, #10 Yoshidora finishing at 5th (which include sending Hurt to loser’s for a upset factor 5) marked his first top 8 at a Japanese supermajor since Kagaribi 11 almost a year prior.

On the other hand, #5 Doramigi and #7 KEN both underperformed severely, with Doramigi losing to #28 Fui 1-3 (UF 5) and #38 MairudonaH.O 2-3 (UF 6) at 33rd and KEN losing to #58 DenKOTA 1-2 (UF 6) and #23 Taikei 0-3 (UF 3) for 49th (his worst placement since 2GG: Kongo Saga in December 2019).
