Article on Lylat Wiki Slippy Toad

Slippy Toad (スリッピー・トード, Slippy Toad) is a character in the Star Fox series. A childhood friend of Fox McCloud, he has been flying with him for several years as a member of the Star Fox team being their mechanic. He has made a number of cameo appearances in Super Smash Bros. games.

Origin

Slippy is the son of Beltino Toad, research director of the Cornerian Defense Force, and nephew of Grippy Toad, a mining operator. While not much is known about his childhood, Fox and Slippy were childhood friends. He would eventually join Fox, along with Falco and Peppy, as a member of the new Star Fox team. He works as the mechanic of the team, fixing ships that had been damaged in battle, as well as inventing various gadgets like the reflector, the Landmaster, and the Blue Marine. He also has the ability to analyze the shield gauge of bosses. He is a fighter pilot, but is less skilled than the other members. His first real mission was the battle of Corneria where he was constantly tailed by enemy fighters and had to be rescued. He would participate in more battles to take down Andross. One of these battles can see Slippy try to fight the Spyborgs alone, but if allowed to do so, he is defeated and left stranded of the planet Titania. Fox goes to the planet to rescue Slippy, using the Landmaster Slippy created.

After the conclusion of the Lylat Wars, Slippy withdrew from active pilot duty to focus on being a mechanic. Slippy would give Fox advice about his surroundings and how to use certain gadgets. After the events on Sauria, Slippy returned to an active combat role, helping out in the battle with Andrew Oikonny and the subsequent threat of the Aparoids, once again providing support by analyzing boss shields.

After the Aparoid conflict, Slippy leaves Star Fox and finds a female toad named Amanda who he falls in love with, but he returns to the Star Fox team in several of the game's routes. One of the endings to Star Fox Command sees the two get married and have many children, while others see him joining a new Star Fox Team.

Due to their childhood friendship, Slippy gets along with Fox the most. Fox is willing to save Slippy at all costs, even if it delays the mission and puts himself in danger. Likewise, Slippy always has a new gadget for Fox to try out. Slippy is also friends with Falco, but more as rivals. Falco frequently picks on Slippy for being a weak link that is always in danger, while Slippy thinks Falco is arrogant and a show-off. Slippy is arch enemies with Andrew Oikonny, with a similar dynamic to Fox and Wolf.

In Super Smash Bros.

Slippy was considered for inclusion as an alternate costume for Fox, alongside Falco and Peppy.[2]

Slippy made a brief cameo in Super Smash Bros. Melee, assisting Fox in an event match. He also created a Cloaking Device for Fox and Falco for a mission in the game (though the existence of the cloaking device in the game comes from Perfect Dark, listed as "TOP SECRET" in its trophy description). Slippy also appears in a secret taunt that only Fox and Falco can do on Star Fox stages features dialog between members of Star Fox, including Slippy, Peppy Hare, and Fox/Falco (depending on which fighter initiated the taunt). His appearance is taken directly from Star Fox 64.

Slippy Toad
Slippy Toad is the mechanical genius behind most of the Star Fox team's new weapons and technology, and just lately he's been spending the bulk of his time in Research and Development. He's also a competent pilot, but his enthusiasm tends to outweigh his technical flight skills. He and Fox have been friends ever since their school days.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Slippy and the others can still be contacted via secret taunt on Corneria. However, when the Smash Taunt is performed by Fox, Falco, or Wolf on Lylat Cruise, both Star Fox and Star Wolf will answer the call, sometimes during the same taunt. In addition, when Snake uses his codec on Shadow Moses Island during a battle with Falco, he will unintentionally contact Slippy, who has hacked into Roy Campbell's codec frequency.

Slippy's design in Brawl for when he appears on Lylat Cruise was updated to match his appearance from Star Fox Assault, despite Fox and Falco using their respective designs from Star Fox Command.

Slippy Toad
A top-notch mechanic with less-than-stellar battle skills. Respected for his talent, he joins the Star Fox team and shows his mechanical genius in everything from vehicle maintenance to weapons development. Slippy often holds the team back with his clumsiness but makes up for it with his likeable personality and morale-boosting presence.

This mechanic is a valued team member, analyzing enemy shields and spotting mines. That might seem like a job for a calm, cool soldier, but Slippy's more of the frantic, panicky type. This behavior only annoys the Star Wolf team...right? He and Fox are old classmates and good friends.

The Star Wolf team finds him a bit grating, but nobody else thinks that... Right? He graduated from the same school as Fox, and those two are close friends.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

As a background character

Slippy reprises his role in the Star Fox Smash Taunts for Corneria, Venom, and Lylat Cruise. As Shadow Moses Island returns along with Snake's Codec Conversations, he reprises his role as a guest character for Falco's conversation. The Corneria and Venom conversations were updated to use Slippy's Star Fox 64 3D appearance.

Spirit

Slippy also appears as an Ace-class support spirit. He can be summoned using the cores of Lin, Winky, one Neutral type, and one support type.

In Adventure Mode: World of Light, Slippy is presumably one of the countless spirits captured by Galeem during his takeover of the universe. Slippy's spirit is located in the Power Plant sub-dungeon of The Light Realm. Slippy is also one of two spirits needed to repair the Great Fox in order to access the outer space area, the other being ROB 64.

Slippy's Spirit Battle uses a Greninja puppet fighter and is fought on the Frigate Orpheon stage. He is fought along with a Fox puppet fighter. During the battle, Greninja must be defeated in one-and-a-half minutes while he tends to avoid conflict, referencing how Slippy is often attacked by enemies and must rely on Fox to help him.

Trivia

  • On the name entry screen's random option, one of the randomly generated names is Slippy.
  • In Smash 4 and Ultimate, one of Fox's alternate costumes is based on Slippy's outfit from Star Fox Assault.
  • Since the dialog for Snake's Codec Conversations is reused between Brawl and Ultimate, Slippy is the only guest character for another universe's Smash Taunt to reprise such role between two games as Palutena's Guidance featured different guest characters between games.
