GENESIS 9 was a supermajor tournament for Melee and Ultimate and regional for Smash 64 and the 9th edition of the GENESIS tournament series. It took place in San Jose, California, from January 20th-22nd, 2023. The event featured singles and doubles tournaments for Super Smash Bros., Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and was a major event for Rivals of Aether, Guilty Gear Strive, and Rushdown Revolt. GENESIS 9 also featured side events for Capcom vs. SNK 2, Dance Dance Revolution Extreme, Dance Dance Revolution Grand Prix, Magical Drop III, Pump It Up XX, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, and Windjammers 2.

The highest-placing non-qualified Ultimate player, MuteAce, qualified for Smash Ultimate Summit 6, and the two highest-placing non-qualified Melee players, Plup and moky, qualified for Smash Summit 15. However, Smash Summit 15 was cancelled after Beyond the Summit decided to shut down following Smash Ultimate Summit 6.[1]

Sportsmanship controversy

Going into the tournament, Mango decided to sandbag in pools with Dr. Mario, citing a lack of motivation and displeasure of being ranked 3rd on the SSBMRank 2022, which released its top 10 ranking on the first day of the tournament.[5] He ultimately placed 97th at the tournament, losing to Taj and Matteo, marking the worst placement of his Melee singles career. His decision to sandbag sparked backlash from some members of the community for perceived lack of sportsmanship. Most notably, moky alluded to the controversy by making a Tweet calling top players in the community "bitchmade".[6]

Following the tournament, Mango released a TwitLonger clearing up his decision. He reaffirmed that he wasn't feeling motivated when going to GENESIS and wanted to focus on watching the Eagles game that weekend, but decided to use his SSBMRank placement as a scapegoat, conceding that his placement made sense. He apologized for acting like he was "bigger than Melee" and stated how he had cleared things up with moky. He also noted his declining motivation for the game, having went to the last three majors mainly for the community, and stated that he had to see a sports therapist the previous year and had hid his struggles in order to provide a positive experience on his stream. Ultimately, Mango announced he was taking a hiatus from the game for a few months in order to get his head on straight and focus on other games.[7]

Trivia

  • Jmook's 1st place finish in Melee singles marks the first time a solo Sheik player has won a Melee supermajor, and the first time a solo Sheik has won a North American major since Captain Jack's victory at MLG San Francisco 2004 18 years prior.
  • MkLeo's 1st place finish in Ultimate singles marks the first time:
    • a player has won five iterations of a Smash supermajor series.
    • a player has won the majority of a Smash supermajor-tier series in existence since Armada's streak of Smash Summit victories in Melee singles (having won the first four iterations of the series, with the distinction lasting until the introduction of Smash Summit 8).
    • a player has won five iterations of a Smash tournament series since Hungrybox's victory in Melee singles at CEO 2018 (which marked his fifth CEO tournament series win).
  • Guildhouse held Pre-Genesis 9 the day before the event, as well as DeGenesis (Genesis 9) after the first and second days of the event.
  • This is the first GENESIS tournament where the Melee singles entrants outnumbered the Ultimate singles entrants.
  • This marks the first overseas tournament appearance for Armada since 2019, who attended the tournament as a commentator.
  • This is the second time Taj has upset Mango at a GENESIS tournament, previously doing so at GENESIS 2.
  • This tournament marks the first time since Apex 2014 where two Jigglypuff players (Hungrybox and 2saint) made it to Top 8 of a Melee major.
  • This tournament stands as ESAM's worst placement at an Ultimate tournament, tying Frostbite 2019 with a 65th place finish.
  • Taj's final placement of 33rd marks the highest placement of a solo Mewtwo player at a post-Project Slippi era major/supermajor Melee tournament.
  • This tournament marks the third year in a row (and fourth overall) that Plup has won Melee doubles at GENESIS.
  • The 3rd place finishers for both Ultimate and Melee singles (Light and moky, respectively) were Fox players sponsored by Moist Esports.
  • This tournament marks the first time a Peach player, MuteAce, has made it to Grand Finals at a supermajor since Samsora in 2019.
    • MuteAce's run was marked by him defeating the #1 player in each of the "big 4" Smash regions: MkLeo (Mexico), Glutonny (France), acola (Japan), and Light (USA).
  • This tournament marks the first time Marss had defeated Dabuz since 2019.
  • This tournament marks Tweek's first GENESIS Top 8, after having been known to historically underperform at the tournament series.
  • In honor of Onin, acola competed in Ultimate singles using Onin's Alex skin and "Catway" nickname throughout the tournament.
  • Dabuz, Spark, Axe, and Zomba were selected as winners of a 13th generation Intel i5 processor for placing 13th in Ultimate/Melee singles.[8]
