The first set of paid DLC for SSB4, featuring Mewtwo and Mii Fighter costumes.

Downloadable content, usually abbreviated as DLC, is additional content available to download after the games' launch. DLC was first confirmed for Super Smash Bros. 4 in the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 50-Fact Extravaganza Nintendo Direct. Downloadable content for the game includes new playable characters, stages, and even new features. Paid content can be found for purchase on the Nintendo eShop in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and in an in-game DLC shop in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS.

DLC that has not been purchased in an updated version is still technically installed but locked, and thus can be played with indirectly. "With Anyone", "With Friends", in local 3DS Versus, and using amiibo as FPs are examples of this. Replays with unpurchased content can be viewed as normal.

Updates

Updates to the game can be downloaded at no extra cost. To purchase DLC, the game must be updated to the latest version, which is usually done automatically when starting the game. Certain updates also adjust game balance and mechanics, as well as fix bugs and other errors. Changelogs for all updates can be found with the links above. Nintendo has not released any detailed info with their official changelogs.

Characters

Pokémon (universe) Mewtwo Super Smash Bros. 4 (April 15th, 2015)

During a Nintendo Direct held on April 1st, 2015, Mewtwo's release date was revealed. On April 15th, 2015, Mewtwo became available as a free download to players who registered both versions of SSB4 on Club Nintendo before March 31st, 2015. As of April 28th, 2015, Mewtwo is currently available for anyone to purchase.
EarthBound (universe) Lucas Super Smash Bros. 4 (June 14th, 2015)
Lucas was first confirmed to reappear in Super Smash Bros. 4 as a downloadable character alongside the reveal of Mewtwo's release date, during a Nintendo Direct held on April 1st, 2015. He was released on June 14th, 2015.
Fire Emblem (universe) Roy Super Smash Bros. 4 (June 14th, 2015)
Melee veteran Roy was leaked as DLC in datamining of the 1.0.6 and 1.0.8 updates. He was officially revealed by Masahiro Sakurai during a Nintendo Direct on June 14th, 2015, and released shortly after on the same day.
Street Fighter (universe) Ryu Super Smash Bros. 4 (June 14th, 2015)
Newcomer Ryu from Capcom's Street Fighter series was leaked alongside Roy. Similarly, he was officially revealed by Masahiro Sakurai during a Nintendo Direct on June 14th, 2015 and released shortly after on the same day. Ryu comes as a set with the stage Suzaku Castle.
Final Fantasy (universe) Cloud Super Smash Bros. 4 (December 15th, 2015)
Newcomer Cloud Strife from Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII was announced during a Nintendo Direct on November 12th, 2015 and released on December 15th, 2015. Cloud comes as a set with the stage Midgar.
Fire Emblem (universe) Corrin Super Smash Bros. 4 (February 3rd, 2016)
Newcomer Corrin from Fire Emblem Fates was announced during a Nintendo Direct on December 15th, 2015, and will be released on February 3rd, 2016. Corrin does not have an exclusive stage, but comes as a set with exclusive trophies in the 3DS version and exclusive music in the Wii U version.
Bayonetta (universe) Bayonetta Super Smash Bros. 4 (February 3rd, 2016)
Newcomer Bayonetta from SEGA and PlatinumGames' Bayonetta series was announced during a Nintendo Direct on December 15th, 2015, and will be released on February 3rd, 2016. Bayonetta comes as a set with the stage Umbra Clock Tower.

In a similar vein to clone characters, DLC characters are recognized by being placed in their own area on the character selection screen, regardless of which franchise they hail from. On the 3DS version, when more than four DLC characters have been purchased and all other characters have been unlocked, the DLC characters are placed on a separate page known as "Extra Fighters".

DLC characters that have not been purchased or otherwise obtained can still be encountered online, and their amiibo can still be used, provided the game is up to date. DLC characters also lack custom moves, the reason for which has not been explained.

Stages

Miiverse (universe) Miiverse Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (June 14th, 2015)

Modes

  • amiibo support Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (February 9th, 2015)
The Wii U version of SSB4 supported amiibo at launch, but the 3DS version had the feature added via patch on February 9th.
During the 50-Fact Extravaganza, it was confirmed that the Wii U version of SSB4 would contain a special mode that allows players to compete in and host tourneys online, in a similar vein to Mario Kart 8 tournaments, though it would not be ready at launch. Another part of this mode is an elimination style tournament mode that bears close resemblance to that of past Smash games. This type of tourney only begins at set (albeit frequent) times.
