King Dedede (SSB4)

King Dedede is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4. He was announced on January 10, 2014 to commemorate the release of Kirby: Triple Deluxe in Japan. Like most characters, he appears to have a more cartoonish appearance in Smash 4 than he did in Brawl, being more brightly colored and looking reminiscent of his appearance in the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! anime. He additionally has been shown to have even more exaggerated facial expressions. His model also appears to be sporting a graphical effect that accentuates the fuzz on his robes and crown.

Changes from Brawl

Dedede appears to have been slightly nerfed from Brawl. While his already strong offensive options have been strengthened, he can no longer perform chaingrabs, and his air game has worsened. In addition, some of his moves have been changed entirely in terms of animation, similar to Bowser.

  • Buff King Dedede is significantly heavier than in Brawl.
  • Buff King Dedede appears to jump higher.
  • Buff His foward tilt now hits multiple times with more damage and knockback.
  • Buff Jab has a finisher, and can still rapid jab.
  • Buff Up aerial is stronger.
  • Buff Super Dedede Jump can now bury grounded opponents.
  • Buff His down tilt is now a roll that sends him forward, with more KO power.
  • Buff Up throw has less ending lag, allowing uair followups at lower percentages.
  • Buff Down air is now a single hit attack and a meteor smash.
    • Nerf It has slowed down a bit.
  • Nerf Up tilt is weaker.
  • Nerf Back throw deals 14% instead of 16%.
  • Nerf Due to changes to grabs, King Dedede can no longer perform chain grabs.
  • Nerf His increased falling speed and slightly laggier aerials have worsened his excellent air game he had in Brawl.
  • Nerf His accelerated falling speed appears to have been increased thus making him more susceptible to combos.
  • Change His Final Smash has changed to Dedede Burst, a ranged final smash, rather than having a full screen final smash, such as Waddle Dee Army.
  • Change Jet Hammer produces much more intense lighting that visually lights up the surrounding areas, and Dedede now visibly sweats with a grimacing facial expression when using the move. Jet Hammer also produces a wind effect, though it's just purely aesthetic. No functional differences with the move are known at this time.
  • Change Waddle Dee Toss has been replaced by a move that exclusively throws Gordos, known as Gordo Throw. It involves Dedede picking up a Gordo, and then hitting it with his hammer to hit it across the stage. The Gordos appear to travel slower and are weaker than they were in Brawl, now hit opponents horizontally instead of vertically, and when they hit an opponent, they bounce off them softly instead of continuing on their path. Gordos bouncing off a hit target can be hit again, and they disappear if they land on the ground.
    • Nerf However, when they are hit back, they home right back to Dedede quite quickly.
    • Buff If a Gordo is still active, Dedede can use his hammer to bash his opponents.
  • Change Forward aerial is now a hammer swing from above.
    • Nerf It has slightly more end lag.
  • Change King Dedede's forward aerial from Brawl is now his back aerial.
  • Change Down throw is now a throw similar in animation to Mario's down throw.
    • Nerf It deals less damage and sends opponents upwards.
      • Buff Its new trajectory gives King Dedede some new approach options if his opponent is under 110%.

Special Moves

In Super Smash Bros. 4, special moves can be swapped out for different variants, but King Dedede's have yet to be seen in action. He retains three of his original special moves. Waddle Dee Toss has been readjusted into a move that has Dedede exclusively toss Gordos called Gordo Throw. He has a new final smash. These are King Dedede's special moves:

Trophies

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS trophy descriptions

King Dedede's regular trophy can be obtained by completing Classic Mode and his alternative trophy can be obtained by completing All-Star mode.

King Dedede
NA: He calls himself the King of Dream Land, but he doesn't have a lot of interest in ruling. He really loves to eat, so it's no surprise he's a heavyweight fighter. Despite his size and low speed, he can easily recover with his four jumps. His Jet Hammer will leave a mark on everyone he meets.
PAL: Being a self-proclaimed king, Dedede clearly doesn't care too much about the whole "politics" things. He's just a bit greedy. In this game, his weight and hefty hammer make him slow, but he can still jump four times in mid-air anyway, making it easy for him to get back to the stage. Fully charge his Jet Hammer for ultimate destruction.
King Dedede (Alt.)
NA: For the Gordo Throw side special, King Dedede sends a Gordo bouncing with a hammer strike. It bounces off walls—or sometimes gets stuck in them. After a while it'll disappear. If an enemy hits one, it'll bounce back toward you. Use the special again to whack it back at them!
PAL: For the Gordo Throw side special, King Dedede hits a Gordo with his hammer, sending it bouncing along the stage. It'll bounce off walls, or sometimes get stuck in them. Then, after a while, it'll disappear. If an enemy hits the Gordo with an attack, it'll fly back towards you. Use the special again to whack it back at them!
