Starter character

A starter character is a character who is already available for play immediately after turning the game on for the first time; the player does not have to unlock, challenge, or download that character in order for him or her to be selectable (as one must do to select unlockable characters and downloadable characters).

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
The starting roster will consist of the original twelve fighters from the first Super Smash Bros. The process for unlocking new fighters however has been "streamlined".
Trivia
- The 8 starter characters of Super Smash Bros. are the only playable characters to remain starter in every installment they appear in.
- Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is one of two installments in the series where all of the original 12 characters appear as starters, the other being Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
- Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS has the same number of starter characters as the number of total characters in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, counting each type of Mii Fighter as seperate and counting each of the Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon as seperate.
