Super Smash Bros. Melee winners USA Mango 1v1

Smash Summit 11 was a Super Smash Bros. Melee invitational supermajor tournament. It was the eleventh installment of the Smash Summit series for Melee, and was held on July 15th-18th, 2021. Like previous Smash Summits, it was held at the Summit Gaming House, a private residence house in Los Angeles, California, and was closed to the general public.

The tournament was notable as the first offline major for Melee in over a year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At $155,372, it also set the record for the largest prize pool of any event in Smash history, a record that it held for a month. Leffen and aMSa were both automatically invited to the event as international competitors who had been unable to compete in North American online events; however, Leffen was unable to attend due to visa issues. Pipsqueak had also qualified for the event, but had to withdraw the day before the start of competition due to travel difficulties; he was then given an automatic invite to Smash Summit 12.

Mango took first place at the event, defeating moky, n0ne, iBDW, Plup, Hungrybox, and Zain twice en route to his first Summit championship. The two-set, ten-game grand finals was immediately considered an all-time classic, as Mango clawed back from an 0-2 deficit in the first set and defeated Zain's Marth using Fox in back-to-back games on Final Destination, a matchup widely considered to be unfavorable for Fox. Hungrybox also had an impressive showing at the event; although his online placements had been lackluster, he defeated aMSa and iBDW to reach winners' finals before losing to Zain and Mango and finishing the event in 3rd place.

Declined players

Ginger dropped out from voting on June 27th due to health problems and being in the process of moving at the time.[1]

Leffen was invited alongside aMSa, but announced on July 2nd, 2021 that he could not attend due to visa issues.[2] As a result, on July 5th it was announced that Rollback Rumble: THE BIG ONE would have two qualifying spots instead of one.[3]

Pipsqueak had qualified as the player with the most points in the S.A.M.E 2021 circuit after Smash Sauna Online.[4] However, due to a myriad of issues pertaining to travel and COVID-19, he too was unable to attend. He was automatically invited to Smash Summit 12, and BTS announced that the player who placed third at Rollback Rumble: THE BIG ONE, KoDoRiN, would be replacing him.[5]

Trivia

  • This tournament has the largest singles pot in all of Melee history at $155,372 and was the first Smash tournament to exceed $100,000, beating the previous record from Smash Summit 5's around $80,000.[6] It was the 14th largest prize pool out of any fighting game.[7] Mango won the largest payout at a Melee tournament at $46,611.60.
  • This was the first in-person Smash Summit since the original Smash Summit where Mango was in Grand Finals, as well as more notably serving as Mango's first Smash Summit win.
  • This was the first odd numbered Smash Summit since Smash Summit 3 where Hungrybox didn't win, ending his streak.
  • The vote-in process for Smash Summit 11 achieved a number of firsts in comparison to prior Summits:
    • This is the first Summit where the majority of players voted in were sponsored (Aklo and yingling being the exceptions at the time of the voting process).
    • Hungrybox had received the most votes for any first round Summit vote-in player in Summit history (around 120,000 votes) until being superseded by Aaron at Smash Ultimate Summit 3.
    • Wizzrobe received the most votes for any player that would ultimately be eliminated from the voting phase (around 138,000 votes) until being superseded by Peanut at Smash Ultimate Summit 3.
    • yingling had received the most votes for any vote-in player in Summit history (around 175,000 votes), though this has since been superseded by Kola at Smash Ultimate Summit 3.
      • yingling's campaign garnered attention due to his underdog status and his lead throughout most of the voting phase. A few notable players, including HugS and LSD, voiced their support for yingling,[8][9] and many other players changed their Twitter profile picture to that of a fish from SpongeBob SquarePants and their Twitter name to "I am Nicholas yingling."
  • Smash Summit 11 was the first in-person Smash Summit to have no players from Sweden and Europe as a whole compete, as both Leffen and Pipsqueak encountered travel issues originating from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that prevented them from attending.
  • Mango's loser's run is the longest of any Smash Summit champion, losing to Plup in Winner's Quarterfinals and then winning 7 consecutive sets from Top 12 onwards.
