Downloadable content, usually abbreviated as DLC, is additional content available to download after the games' launch. DLC was first confirmed for Super Smash Bros. 4 in the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 50-Fact Extravaganza Nintendo Direct. Downloadable content for the game includes new playable characters, stages, and even new features. Paid content can be found for purchase on the Nintendo eShop in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and in an in-game DLC shop in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS.
DLC that has not been purchased in an updated version is still technically installed but locked, and thus can be played with indirectly. "With Anyone", "With Friends", in local 3DS Versus, and using amiibo as Figure Players (FPs) are examples of this. Replays with unpurchased content can be viewed as normal.

Updates
Updates to the game can be downloaded at no extra cost. To purchase DLC, the game must be updated to the latest version, which is usually done automatically when starting the game. Certain updates also adjust game balance and mechanics, as well as fix bugs and other errors. Changelogs for all updates can be found with the links above. Nintendo has not released any detailed information with their official changelogs.
Characters
- Mewtwo (April 15th, 2015)
- Melee veteran Mewtwo was announced as the very first DLC character in the Super Smash Bros. series during the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 50-Fact Extravaganza on October 23rd, 2014. During a Nintendo Direct held on April 1st, 2015, Mewtwo's release date was revealed. On April 15th, 2015, Mewtwo became available as a free download to players who registered both versions of SSB4 on Club Nintendo before March 31st, 2015. As of April 28th, 2015, Mewtwo is currently available for anyone to purchase.
- Lucas (June 14th, 2015)
- Brawl veteran Lucas was first confirmed to reappear in Super Smash Bros. 4 as a downloadable character alongside the reveal of Mewtwo's release date, during a Nintendo Direct held on April 1st, 2015. He was released on June 14th, 2015.
- Roy (June 14th, 2015)
- Melee veteran Roy was leaked as DLC in datamining of the 1.0.6 and 1.0.8 updates. He was officially revealed by Masahiro Sakurai during a Nintendo Direct on June 14th, 2015, and released shortly after on the same day.
- Ryu (June 14th, 2015)
- Newcomer Ryu from Capcom's Street Fighter series was leaked alongside Roy. Similarly, he was officially revealed by Masahiro Sakurai during a Nintendo Direct on June 14th, 2015 and released shortly after on the same day. Ryu comes as a set with the stage Suzaku Castle.
- Cloud (December 15th, 2015)
- Newcomer Cloud Strife from Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII was announced during a Nintendo Direct on November 12th, 2015 and released on December 15th, 2015. Cloud comes as a set with the stage Midgar.
- Corrin (February 3rd, 2016)
- Newcomer Corrin from Fire Emblem Fates was announced during a Nintendo Direct on December 15th, 2015, and released on February 3rd, 2016. Corrin does not have an exclusive stage, but comes as a set with exclusive trophies in the 3DS version and exclusive music in the Wii U version.
- Bayonetta (February 3rd, 2016)
- Newcomer Bayonetta from SEGA and PlatinumGames' Bayonetta series was announced during a Nintendo Direct on December 15th, 2015, and released on February 3rd, 2016. Bayonetta comes as a set with the stage Umbra Clock Tower.
In a similar vein to clone characters, DLC characters are recognized by being placed in their own area on the character selection screen, regardless of which franchise they hail from. On the 3DS version, when more than four DLC characters have been purchased and all other characters have been unlocked, the DLC characters are placed on a separate page known as "Extra Fighters".
DLC characters that have not been purchased or otherwise obtained can still be encountered online, and their amiibo can still be used, provided the game is up to date. DLC characters also lack custom moves, the reason for which has not been explained.
Stages
- Miiverse (June 14th, 2015)
- A stage based on the Miiverse application found on Wii U and 3DS consoles, it was confirmed in the 50-Fact Extravaganza that it would be added to the Wii U version of SSB4 in an update after release. It was made available for free on June 14th, 2015.
- Dream Land (64) (June 14th, 2015)
- Suzaku Castle (June 14th, 2015)
- Suzaku Castle comes as a set with Ryu.
- Peach's Castle (64) (July 31st, 2015)
- Hyrule Castle (64) (July 31st, 2015)
- Super Mario Maker (September 30th, 2015)
- Pirate Ship (September 30th, 2015)
- Duck Hunt (September 30th, 2015)
- The Duck Hunt stage was available in the Wii U version at launch as an unlockable stage; it was added to the 3DS version in a free update.
- Midgar (December 15th, 2015)
- Midgar comes as a set with Cloud.
- Umbra Clock Tower (February 3rd, 2016)
- Umbra Clock Tower comes as a set with Bayonetta.
It is possible to play on a DLC stage that has not been purchased while online in With Friends or in 3DS Versus by having a player who owns the stage in question select it (other players can ensure it will be played by selecting random), or by just encountering it randomly when playing With Anyone.
Modes
- amiibo support (February 9th, 2015)
- The Wii U version of SSB4 supported amiibo at launch, but the 3DS version had the feature added via patch on February 9th.
- Tourney mode (July 31st, 2015)
- During the 50-Fact Extravaganza, it was confirmed that the Wii U version of SSB4 would contain a special mode that allows players to compete in and host tourneys online, in a similar vein to Mario Kart 8 tournaments, though it would not be ready at launch. Another part of this mode is an elimination style tournament mode that bears close resemblance to that of past Smash games. This type of tourney only begins at set (albeit frequent) times.
