Mushroom Kingdom (いにしえの王国, Ancient Kingdom) is a starter stage in Super Smash Bros. Melee. It is Luigi and Dr. Mario's home stage. In All-Star mode, this stage is played on when Luigi and any of his teammates are faced.
Origin
This stage originates from the NES game Super Mario Bros. Blocks are prominent in Super Mario Bros., more particularly Question Blocks and Brick Blocks. When a Question Block is hit from below, it will release an item. Brick Blocks typically do not contain items, and if the player has a Super Mushroom, that person can break them. All of the aforementioned is retained in Melee except that players do not have to hit blocks from below to get an item, nor do they have to have a Super Mushroom to break Brick Blocks. The floating platforms in Melee that are above the two pits also originate from Super Mario Bros. There is also many elements in the background that can be seen, all of which come from Super Mario Bros. in their original 8-bit form. For example, Goombas, a flag pole, tall mushrooms, etc. [1]
There are two tracks that are used in this stage. One of which comes directly from Super Mario Bros.' above ground theme. Also, just like Super Mario Bros., when the timer runs low, a sped up version of the music will play. The other track is a remixed version of the track Fever from the puzzle game Dr. Mario. [2]

Tournament legality
Due to it having caves of life due to the bricks on the stage, as well as walk-off blast-lines and an irregular design, Mushroom Kingdom is banned in tournaments.
Trivia
- In the beta version of the game, the arena had a slightly different look, similar to the SSB version. Most notably was the presence of Warp Pipes near the corners of either side that could presumably be accessed.
- When tiny, Jigglypuff, Fox, Kirby, Mr. Game & Watch, and Pichu can stand on the floating platform indefinitely, without it falling.
- The moving platforms are an easy way to compare weight.
- Mushroom Kingdom and Mushroom Kingdom II are the only two stages to share an alternate music track: Dr. Mario. This is not counting Big Battlefield in SSB4, as it shares it's entire music selection with Battlefield(SSB4).
- Mushroom Kingdom is one of the two stages to change music when the timer goes under 20 seconds, the other being Mushroom Kingdom II.
