Wario (SSB4)

Wario (ワリオ, Wario) returns as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4. He was officially confirmed on October 3rd, 2014 alongside Ness and Falco, but was leaked beforehand on September 11th by a leaker's Twitch stream. This time around, he is unlockable, as opposed to being available from the start in Brawl.

His appearance is largely the same, except with his chin being more pronounced, his arms are also more muscular, and the colors being overall brighter, more akin to the WarioWare series.

He retains his biker outfit from the WarioWare series, as well as his overalls from the Mario games. He is voiced by Charles Martinet, who voices the character in all but a few of his appearances, as well as Mario, Luigi, and Waluigi, using the same voice clips from Brawl.

How To Unlock

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS

Wario must then be fought on WarioWare, Inc.. Defeating him will unlock both him and the stage.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

  • Play 20 VS Matches.
  • Clear 100-Man Smash

Wario must then be fought on Gamer before being unlocked.

Changes from Brawl

Despite being a high tier character in Brawl, Wario has received a significant amount of buffs from Brawl to Smash 4, but not without some nerfs to counter them. While he lost some of his great aerial speed and aerial acceleration from Brawl, he has received a number of more reliable recovery options to compensate. One of his most reliable kill moves from Brawl, his Forward Smash, has been replaced with a heavy-hitting backhanded punch that has much more range and knockback, but is significantly slower and no longer has the Super Armor frames of the Shoulder-Barge. Despite these changes, with the addition of his new Up Smash, and the increased knockback delivered by the Wario Bike and Wario Waft, Wario now has a much broader range of reliable killing moves to compensate.

Aesthetics

  • Change Like a number of other characters in the games, Wario's facial expressions are much more exaggerated than before. For example, Wario now scowls when performing an attack. This exaggeration is present even more so in the Wii U version, where Wario's mustache and eyebrows now stretch and grow to fit the situation.
  • Change Wario's animations are somewhat more fluid than in Brawl. This is especially noticeable in his new dashing animation.
  • Change The gaseous effect created by Wario's Wario Waft now has a cartoonish style, where in Brawl, it has a more realistic style.
  • Change Unlike his Brawl incarnation, where only his stomach bulged out from under his shirt slightly, Wario now physically bulges when his Wario Waft is charging, to the point where his frame actually becomes wider. It is unknown if this change affects his movement or the size of his hitboxes.
  • Change The animation of both Wario's initial and secondary jumps now differ from Brawl. For example, holding back upon Wario's initial jump, now results in him doing a back flip.
  • Change Wario now blinks, as opposed to Brawl, where his eyes remained open unless asleep or injured.

Attributes

  • Buff Wario dashes faster.
  • Nerf Wario's aerial speed and acceleration, while still higher than a majority of the cast's, has been nerfed significantly.

Ground attacks

  • Buff Forward tilt is sped up.
  • Buff Down tilt is sped up.
  • Buff Forward smash is now a fist-inflating backhand punch. Compared to the old shoulder barge, it has much more range and knockback.
  • Nerf New forward smash is slower, lacks the launch resistance and transcendent priority of his old forward smash.
  • Buff Up smash is now a one-hit headbutt similar to Mario's, which makes it stronger and more reliable overall.
  • Buff Down smash has less endlag and due to an increase in knockback, is a much more reliable killing move.

Aerial attacks

  • Nerf Neutral and up aerials have slightly more landing lag.
  • Change Neutral and down aerials no longer make 8-bit-style sounds on execution.
  • Buff Neutral aerial has a longer-lasting hitbox.
  • Buff Back aerial has slightly less landing lag and auto-cancels out of a short-hop.
  • Buff Back aerial delivers much more knockback.
  • Nerf Up aerial deals 4% less damage and is weaker.
  • Buff Down aerial has more knockback.
  • Nerf Down aerial has more ending lag.
  • Nerf Down aerial can no longer penetrate shields and is less reliable to rack up damage.

Throws/other attacks

  • Change Wario's forward and back throws have swapped places.
  • Buff Forward throw delivers much more knockback.

Special moves

  • Buff Using Chomp on certain projectiles and items (including his bike) now heals Wario for 1% (or 1.5x in the case of Food) and slightly increases the charge of Wario Waft.
  • Nerf Chomp cannot be held as long.
  • Change Wario faces slightly more to the screen while using Chomp, unlike the previous installment, where he faces straight.
  • Buff Wario Bike continues to deal damage after Wario dismounts, with it being able to muscle through almost any opposing projectile, thus giving Wario a pseudo-projectile and a new approach option.
  • Buff Ending a wheelie now slams the bike on opponents for high damage and incredible knockback.
  • Buff Wario no longer falls off his bike simply from riding or making turns. This allows him to ride around indefinitely until he is hit or the player dismounts.
  • Buff Wario Bike can now be respawned immediately after being broken or disappearing from the screen, with an orange blink flashing on Wario being a visual indicator that it has respawned.
  • Buff Hitting an opponent with the Wario Bike while turning sharply now results in a heavier hit with increased knockback.
  • Nerf Wario Bike's wheels cannot be used as throwing items when the bike is destroyed, and disappear upon contact with the ground or the move is re-used.
  • Nerf The bike is less effective at shielding Wario from projectiles as he rides it.
  • Nerf Wheelies can no longer be held indefinitely, and can only be done at one height.
  • Nerf Wario can no longer dismount his bike during a wheelie, even if he rides offstage.
  • Buff Corkscrew covers more vertical distance and can now sweet spot the edge.
  • Buff Corkscrew has considerably more knockback and with proper timing, can be used to KO near the upper blast line.
  • Buff Wario Waft has significantly more knockback at maximum charge.
  • Buff It is much more difficult to self destruct on the uppermost blast line with a fully charged Wario Waft.
  • Nerf Wario Waft does less damage and gains less altitude.
  • Nerf Wario-Man lasts for less time.

Taunts

Up: Belly-laughs so hard, his jaw unhinges, so he has to manually put it back with his hands.

Side:Wario wiggles his butt at the screen with his hands extended in each direction and he teasingly snickers.

Down: Wario faces the screen, holds up three fingers with his left hand that seem to form a "W" for Wario and then does the same with his right hand after putting away his left hand. Then, he holds them both out at the same time. Wario utters "Wah!" three times for each time he holds up a hand, the third "Wah!" having the most enthusiasm.

While riding Wario Bike (in any direction): Wario laughs and faces to his right and does his signature "W" sign at the screen with both hands and then picks his nose with his left hand.

Idle poses

  • Crosses his arms, fists clenched.
  • Scratches his bottom.

On-Screen Appearance

Crashes in sideways on his bike while laughing, jumps off and his bike explodes while he dusts himself off.

Victory Fanfare

A shortened remix to the theme of the first stage of Wario Land: Shake It!.

Victory poses

  • He does a donut on his bike, makes a "W" sign with his hand, saying "Yes!", then pulls on his mustache and makes the "W" sign again, process repeats.
  • He laughs gloatingly and then falls over, rolling on his back.
  • Pats his belly, releasing a fart that after smelling, results in an "Oooh..." from Wario.

Trophies

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS trophy descriptions

Wario

NA: A living embodiment of gross, this villain hates Mario and loves money. He claims to have known Mario since childhood, but who can tell if that's true? In Smash Bros., he's a seriously agile heavyweight fighter. He can store up his trademark Wario Waft for explosive results. Did I mention he's gross?
PAL: If someone who hated Mario tried to draw an ugly version of him, it'd probably end up looking just like Wario. The greedy villain claims they used to be childhood friends, though... In this game, he's a heavy fighter with heavy-hitting attacks. The longer you go without using his Wario Waft move, the more explosive it'll be when you..."let it out".

Wario (Alt.)

NA: With his Chomp special, Wario can wolf down almost anything! Hold the button, and he'll keep his mouth open. Also, if you gobble up healing items, they'll work better! When using his Wario Bike side special, you can jump off, pick it up, and throw it. If you take one thing away from this, it's JUMP OFF. Don't ride off the stage.

Update history

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS 1.0.4

  • Change to DI system results in removal of "wectoring", a glitch allowing Wario to rocket back onstage just after being able to act after knockback.
  • A bug where he got sent farther from the air grab release and could not combo out of is fixed.
