Charizard, known in Japan as Lizardon (リザードン, Rizādon), has been confirmed to return as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. 4, revealed with Greninja in a trailer during the April 8th, 2014 Super Smash Bros. Direct. Unlike in Brawl, where it was used as one of Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon, it now appears as a stand-alone character. Charizard's skin appears to be a brighter orange and its proportions are more in-line with its recent three-dimensional appearances in the Pokémon franchise. For example, Charizard's fangs are smaller than they were in Brawl, which now makes them more proportional to their size in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y.
Confirmed information
- The following moves appear visually unchanged:
- Forward tilt
- Neutral aerial
- Back throw
- Flamethrower
- Up taunt
- Charizard has a new aerial attack that involves scratching forward, similar to Bowser's forward aerial.
- Charizard's new side special is Flare Blitz, which has been described as a very powerful attack. It turns into a fireball and shoots sideways, but will inflict recoil damage on Charizard if it makes contact with an opponent.
- Rock Smash is now Charizard's down special, replacing Pokemon Change.
- Charizard's new Final Smash has been confirmed to be Mega Charizard X.
