Forums: Index Smash Arena

SmashArena.png

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome, editors and users, to the Smash Arena! Each week this forum hosts a tussle between two characters, items, stages or anything else from the Super Smash Bros. series! The winner gets, well, nothing. It's more of a poll but functionally, this is a popularity contest. You may vote for your favorite or who you think would win in an competition between the two combatants that round. No, you don't have to vote for the character with strength & power, or the stage considered more "fair", or the combatant with the most fans - just vote if you are a total fanboy of the participant. So what are you waiting for? Get voting! Remember, you don't have to have an account to vote! Though new requests for fights can no longer be made, voting on already existing requests can be done here.

The Rules

  1. When voting, you can give a brief comment on why you voted the way you did, or you can just leave your signature. Long explanations for your vote are discouraged, as they are unnecessary (a vote is worth the same regardless of its reasoning), and they inflate the size of an already large page.
  2. You can vote only once. Any multiple votes will be removed.
  3. Put a # before your vote to facilitate the vote counting.
  4. Type ~~~~ after your vote to sign it, whether you are logged in or not. Using the wrong number of "~"s counts as not signing - your signature must have both your signature itself and the time.
  5. There is a line in each section consisting of "DO NOT ADD COMMENTS OR EDIT ANYTHING BELOW THIS LINE". You are to do so; do not just type your vote at the bottom of the editing window. Not following this rule results in your vote being displayed in the wrong place.
  6. Put your vote below other votes; that is, so the votes are in chronological order.
  7. You may change or remove your vote at any time. To do this you must remove your old vote in its entirety; this is an exception to the "never remove comments" rule.
  8. You may vote only in the current fight; all previous fights are closed.
  9. Do not leave a space between your comment and the ones above it (and/or below it). Extra spacing results in the list numbers becoming disjointed.
  10. While previewing an edit of a single section, you will see loose formatting marks (such as a trailing |}). Do not alter or delete them; they are important to the page's construction and take effect only when the entire round is viewed.
  11. If there are multiple fights in a single round, try to make all your votes in a single edit.
  12. Any comments about the fight should be left in the comments section. The following kinds of comments are not allowed:
    • Comments relating to how close or one-sided a matchup is.
    • Comments about other users' opinions. You can point out that a user may have gotten a fact wrong, but you can't say things such as "That's not a good reason" or "But the other guy is better because X". Users can vote for any reason they want; trying to argue with someone's opinion generally has no positive outcome, in addition to simply inflating the comments section of an already large page.

If your vote is not added correctly - specifically, it breaks rules 3, 4, or 5 - you have a short amount of time to fix it (typically between fifteen minutes to an hour). After this time, it may be corrected and moved by any user to the Half-Votes section (adding the unsigned template if necessary), and it will count as half a vote. Attempting to move your vote out of the Half-Votes section may result in it being worth zero at an operator's discretion.

Multiple votes are not allowed; attempts to circumvent this with sockpuppets will result in your vote being discounted entirely, and is a bannable offense. Probated users who attempt to circumvent their probation with sockpuppets are also committing a bannable offense and will have their vote discounted. Remember that admins have access to Check User to check the IPs of any user, and will use it when sockpuppetry is suspected.

Intentional half-votes undermine the intent of the half-vote system as a way to punish voters for voting incorrectly. It is legal to want a vote to be worth half, but it is very heavily discouraged, and you must state in your vote you want it to be worth half. If you put your vote in the half-votes section without stating reasons why you want it there, it is worth zero and may be deleted by any user. You may replace it later should you do it correctly.

Above all, remember that voting in the Smash Arena is a privilege, not a right. In the vein of what SmashWiki is not, you are expected to at least attempt reasonable contributions to the wiki if you wish to retain your privilege to participate.

Round 166: Link vs. Samus

Link SSBB.jpg
Winner!!

~ to ~
Samus SSBB.jpg
The two arsenal-toting adventurers of legend are back. While one fights at close range and the other prefers distances, they aren't exactly slouches in the other's department, and they both have the tools to cleave through enemy forces like paper. How will this tiebreaker end?

  3. Always going to stick with this controller, which almost makes me reluctant to buy a Wii U. The GameCube controller is also perhaps the most used in Smash competitive gaming. I don't think many people are used to play with a Wiimote or Wiimote and Nunchuck and I don't even have a classic controller. Dots The Thanksgiving NintenNESsprite.png 11:04, 24 November 2012 (EST)
  4. The sole reason I am not going to perform a Wii to Wii U system transfer. I can't leave this controller behind. Wii Remote and Wii Remote + Nunchuck's difficulty with smash attacks are problematic, and the Classic Controller, while decent, has a few flaws, such as the control sticks being too tall for the comfort of my thumbs. Perhaps when somebody makes an unofficial GameCube controller/port for Wii U, I will (I have faith this will happen). I already reckon I'll be using the Wii U GamePad for SSB4, however. 10. I will never part with this controller. The GameCube was my first system (MK:DD being my first game), and I am still inseparable from this controller and many GameCube games. Plus, I can play all 3 Smash games with it! DarkFox01: Gobblegobblegobble 16:21, 24 November 2012 (EST)
  11. I feel comfortable with the GCN controller; the Nunchuk and Wiimote to play Brawl will only cause me pain. 67.166.229.4 19:49, 24 November 2012 (EST)
  12. I was always comfortable using this controller, and I'm the best with this out of all of the 4 ways to play Brawl. Too bad the same can't be said for the Wii U. :( Smash Master 20:21, 24 November 2012 (EST)
  13. Most optimal design for tech skill and probably the only viable controller in competitive play, except perhaps the wii-mote + nunchuk. Then again only 2 professionals use wiimote and nunchuk (UltimateRazer and Tearbear).--BrianDon't try me!Falco.gif 23:23, 24 November 2012 (EST)
  14. Wiimote alone is just terrible and should have never been an option; Wiichuck takes significant getting used to; CC lacks durability and requires you to lug the Wiimote along with it; GCN has the optimal design without any of the hassle, and can last you years. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 01:52, 25 November 2012 (EST)
  15. Sooooooo much better. Shanderu MiniGhost.png 18:10, 25 November 2012 (EST)

  18. ...do I have to say anything? Ok then WHY DO I HAVE TO FIND MY WIIMOTE TO PLAY BRAWL?! LightningBlue405MS.png 23:23, 28 November 2012 (EST)
  19. Can be used with both Melee and Brawl.SuperBowser (talk) 05:20, 30 November 2012 (EST)
  20. Loved this awesome controller when I was playing Melee, and I bought it specifically for Brawl, as I don't have any Nintendo GameCube games. The Wiimote-alone and Wiimote+Nunchuk Attachment combination controllers are just weird; I can't really do smashes and tilts as effectively on them (and it's a chore to taunt on Wiimote alone) , although I can somewhat hold my own even with the Wiimote-alone controller. Haven't tried Classic Controller; GCN Controller just feels right. A downright shame that the Wii U can't utilize it (as of now...), as well as that the Wiimote is required to start up Brawl. 72.3.33.7 18:08, 30 November 2012 (EST)

@Fugudev: I use my GameCube controller on my laptop too, it's indispensable for my LP'ing, when you consider how loud the keyboard would be when the microphone is inside the laptop, and I can also imagine that when I eventually get around to playing Super Smash Flash 2 with this controller, it'll be ever so much more useful than the keys. I can't say I've ever heard of a port that lets you plug a Classic Controller into a computer, only Nintendo controllers at and predating GameCube, and those of the other consoles. Toast Wii U Logo Transparent.pngltimatumTransparent Swadloon.png 18:00, 24 November 2012 (EST)

@Omega Tyrant: The standalone Wii remote was an option because I wanted to include all four controller schemes, and if I left out any one, people who use said controller would whine about it. Air Conditioner AC.png likes pie 12:56, 25 November 2012 (EST)

I believe OT means the Wii Remote being a control scheme in the game altogether. I'm fine with it, some casuals want to be authentic, it just so happens the control scheme is poor. Toast Wii U Logo Transparent.pngltimatumTransparent Swadloon.png 12:59, 25 November 2012 (EST)
This is correct, but my brief reasoning why it shouldn't have been included; the controller is vastly inferior to the others (and cannot really handle Smash), and it causes a few people to spend their time getting used to a controller they can barely play the game with, while there was really no reason to include it as an option (Wiichuck is standard with the Wii and every Wii owner should have one, so making Wiimote useuable wasn't necessary for ensuring every Wii owner could play). Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 01:13, 26 November 2012 (EST)

I just want to make it clear that Brawl is the only game where I have a problem with the Wiimote. But that's only because Smash attacks are harder on the Wii Remote. I konw this sounds unnecessary, but I don't want people thinking I'm one of those gamers who can't play any game unless the controller is absolutely normal. Nintendosega75 (talk) 16:34, 26 November 2012 (EST)

You can't play Brawl on the Wiimote not because it's not a "normal controller", but the for the fact the controller is completely unable to properly handle a game like Brawl. And who cares if you prefer to not limit yourself and use "normal controllers"? Being able to control the game properly is the most important aspect to any game. As for Supersmash4, look at his talkpage. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 03:40, 27 November 2012 (EST)
