==Items== | |||
The items that appear during regular gameplay and are listed under Item Switch may be broken down into several different types of items based on how they are used and their effects.
===Container items===
Container items can be broken if thrown or hit and will release other items when broken. Opponents hit by thrown container items will be damaged. Container items have a 25% chance of exploding, dealing greater damage than normal but at the same time not releasing any items.

Note: Sandbag is not considered one of the other Containers in Brawl's Item Switch and thus has a separate switch. In addition, it has no chance of explosion, and cannot be carried, but still releases items. Additionally, Sandbag does exist in SSBM, but not as an item.
===Battering items===
Battering items change each character's neutral attack, forward tilt, dash attack, and forward smash into a damaging item swipe. They can be thrown, tilt-thrown, or smash-thrown with Z and the C-Stick as well and may also have certain special effects.

Projectile items thrown at enemies, and are often explosives. They may stick to characters or surfaces, or even hang midair, but are always used by simply pressing A.

===Performance items===
These items take effect the instant a character picks them up and increase or change his or her natural abilities. They wear off after several seconds, depending on the item. Some affect the user, and others work on opponents.

===Recovery items=== | |||
Recovery items will reduce the damage of the character who picks them up. In Super Smash Bros., a character may not pick up a healing item while holding another item; this was changed in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

===Assist Trophies===
Assist Trophies (called "Assist Figures" in Japan) are very much like Poke Balls (called "Monster Balls" in Japan) in that they summon random characters, however, instead of throwing them, they are automatically activated upon pickup. They only activate when standing; a character will continue to hold an Assist Trophy and he/she can even be knocked away if an opponent hits him before it takes effect.

===Collectibles=== | |||
Collectibles are items that can only be picked up in the course of game play. They do not cause any direct or immediate change to a match. Stickers can be used during The Subspace Emissary to enhance a character's abilities. CDs add to the list of songs playable during matches. Trophies (called "figures" in Japan) give some background information about various elements in the game.

===Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary===
These items are only available in the Adventure Mode of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Trophy stands (called "smash plates" in Japan) are thrown at an enemy to transform it into a trophy ("figure" in Japan) after greatly weakening it.

Four items in Super Smash Bros. Brawl have a second sub-category, called 'Character Items'. During the Character Roll Call, four items will feature amongst all of the characters, due to them being living creatures. These items are;

Melee Intro
Video Discription
The opening movie of Melee was given particularly high attention by the developing team; according to Sakurai, the team wanted to create an entire, high-quality FMV sequence in the game in order to highlight the then newly-released GameCube console's graphical power in comparison to previous consoles. The development team worked in three different animations studios in Tokyo, Japan to finish the FMV opening.

Super Smash Bros. Melee
Game Information
“ | Within Nintendo, we've had a lot of discussion about which of our most popular characters should be ready to appear in games when Nintendo GameCube comes to market. We think we've got a great answer. | ” |
Super Smash Bros. Melee, known in Japan as Dairantou* Smash Brothers DX** (大乱闘 スマッシュ ブラザーズDX, Dairantō Sumasshu Burazāzu Dī Ekkusu), and often shortened to "SSBM" or "Melee", is a 3-D on a 2-D plane fighting game for the Nintendo GameCube. It was released in late 2001 in America and Japan, shortly after GameCube's launch, and early 2002 in Europe. It is the second game in the Super Smash Bros. series, following its predecessor, Super Smash Bros..
Like Super Smash Bros., its predecessor, Melee features gameplay unique from that of other fighting games. Compared to characters in other fighting games, Melee characters have simple movesets and lack complicated button inputs and lengthy natural combos. Instead Melee emphasizes movement and ringouts. Indeed, edge-guarding in Melee takes on much more significance than it does in most other games due to copious mid-air jumps and other methods of reaching the edge unfettered.

List of Super Smash Bros. series characters
Playable Characters
A character is one of the fighters in the Super Smash Bros. series. Characters can be sorted into playable and non-playable, which distinguishes whether characters can be used without the use of a cheat device (like Action Replay) or not. Playable characters can further be divided into starter and unlockable, which distinguishes whether characters can be played right away, or whether they need to be unlocked.
This is a list of the playable characters in the Super Smash Bros. series. Shaded cells denote unlockable characters.
Non-playable characters
The following characters are considered non-playable. These include boss characters and enemy teams, among others. Hacking may allow some level of play.
*While Giant DK and Metal Mario were unplayable in the original Super Smash Bros., they are technically playable in Melee and Brawl by picking up a Super Mushroom or a Metal Box, respectively.
**Giga Bowser is playable in Brawl as Bowser's Final Smash.
***Master Hand is playable in Melee through the Name Entry glitch.
****Sandbag is considered an item in Brawl, not a character.
Items
The items that appear during regular gameplay and are listed under Item Switch may be broken down into several different types of items based on how they are used and their effects.
Container items
Container items can be broken if thrown or hit and will release other items when broken. Opponents hit by thrown container items will be damaged. Container items have a 25% chance of exploding, dealing greater damage than normal but at the same time not releasing any items.

Sandbags |
Note: Sandbag is not considered one of the other Containers in Brawl's Item Switch and thus has a separate switch. In addition, it has no chance of explosion, and cannot be carried, but still releases items. Additionally, Sandbag does exist in SSBM, but not as an item.
Battering items
Battering items change each character's neutral attack, forward tilt, dash attack, and forward smash into a damaging item swipe. They can be thrown, tilt-thrown, or smash-thrown with Z and the C-Stick as well and may also have certain special effects.

Cracker Launchers |
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, characters are able to move while shooting, the C-Stick can be used to fire while moving in the direction it's tilted, or throw the shooting item if it is out of ammo.
Projectile items
Projectile items thrown at enemies, and are often explosives. They may stick to characters or surfaces, or even hang midair, but are always used by simply pressing A.
Performance items
These items take effect the instant a character picks them up and increase or change his or her natural abilities. They wear off after several seconds, depending on the item. Some affect the user, and others work on opponents.
Recovery items
Recovery items will reduce the damage of the character who picks them up. In Super Smash Bros., a character may not pick up a healing item while holding another item; this was changed in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Assist Trophies
Assist Trophies (called "Assist Figures" in Japan) are very much like Poke Balls (called "Monster Balls" in Japan) in that they summon random characters, however, instead of throwing them, they are automatically activated upon pickup. They only activate when standing; a character will continue to hold an Assist Trophy and he/she can even be knocked away if an opponent hits him before it takes effect.

Collectibles
Collectibles are items that can only be picked up in the course of game play. They do not cause any direct or immediate change to a match. Stickers can be used during The Subspace Emissary to enhance a character's abilities. CDs add to the list of songs playable during matches. Trophies (called "figures" in Japan) give some background information about various elements in the game.

Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary
These items are only available in the Adventure Mode of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Trophy stands (called "smash plates" in Japan) are thrown at an enemy to transform it into a trophy ("figure" in Japan) after greatly weakening it.

- Egg will always break when it gets reflected by anything, or explode if it was boobytrapped for that matter.
