Forums: Index Smash Arena

SmashArena.png

Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome, editors and users, to the Smash Arena! Each week this forum hosts a tussle between two characters, items, stages or anything else from the Super Smash Bros. series! The winner gets, well, nothing. It's more of a poll but functionally, this is a popularity contest. You may vote for your favorite or who you think would win in an competition between the two combatants that round. No, you don't have to vote for the character with strength & power, or the stage considered more "fair", or the combatant with the most fans - just vote if you are a total fanboy of the participant. So what are you waiting for? Get voting! Remember, you don't have to have an account to vote! Though new requests for fights can no longer be made, voting on already existing requests can be done here.

The Rules

  1. When voting, you can give a brief comment on why you voted the way you did, or you can just leave your signature.
  2. You can only vote once. Any multiple votes will be removed.
  3. Put a # before your vote to facilitate the vote counting.
  4. Type ~~~~ after your vote to sign it, whether you are logged in or not. Using the wrong number of "~"s counts as not signing - your signature must have both your signature itself and the time.
  5. There is a line in each section consisting of "DO NOT ADD COMMENTS OR EDIT ANYTHING BELOW THIS LINE". You are to do so; do not just type your vote at the bottom of the editing window. Not following this rule results in your vote being displayed in the wrong place.
  6. Put your vote below other votes; that is, so the votes are in chronological order.
  7. You may change or remove your vote at any time. To do this you must remove your old vote in its entirety; this is an exception to the "never remove comments" rule.
  8. You may only vote in the current fight; all previous fights are closed.
  9. Do not leave a space between your comment and the ones above it (and/or below it). Extra spacing results in the list numbers becoming disjointed.
  10. While previewing an edit of a single section, you will see loose formatting marks (such as a trailing |}). Do not alter or delete them; they are important to the page's construction and only take effect when the entire round is viewed.
  11. If there are multiple fights in a single round, try to make all your votes in a single edit.
  12. Any comments about the fight should be left in the comments section. The following kinds of comments are not allowed:
    • Comments relating to how close or one-sided a matchup is.
    • Comments about other users' opinions. You can point out that a user may have gotten a fact wrong, but you can't say things along the lines of "That's not a good reason" or "But the other guy is better because X". Users can vote for any reason they want; trying to argue with someone's opinion generally has no positive outcome, in addition to simply inflating the comments section of an already rather long page.

If your vote is not added correctly - specifically, it breaks rules 3, 4, or 5 - you have a short amount of time to fix it (typically between fifteen minutes to an hour). After this time, it may be corrected and moved by any user to the Half-Votes section (adding the unsigned template if necessary), and it will count as half a vote. Attempting to move your vote out of the Half-Votes section may result in it being worth zero at an operator's discretion.

Intentional half-votes undermine the intent of the half-vote system as a way to punish voters for voting incorrectly. It is legal to want a vote to be worth half, but it is very heavily discouraged, and you must state in your vote you want it to be worth half. If you put your vote in the half-votes section without stating reasons why you want it there, it is worth zero and may be deleted by any user. You may replace it later should you do it correctly.

Round 148: Torchic vs. Piplup

Torchic.jpg
Winner!!
undecided

0 to 0
Surf.jpg
A bout between two common Pokéball Pokémon: both birds that cover their immediate area in trapping hitboxes, but controlling vastly different elements. Which peeper prevails?

Votes for Torchic

  1. Even though there's the type disadvantage and all, purely talking about their SSBB abilities I prefer Torchic since it actually attacks pretty much instantly after being released from the Poke Ball, unlike Piplup. 110.174.90.69 00:06, 28 July 2012 (EDT)
  2. I don't play with Pokeballs on, but to me a fire attack makes more sense that a water one. Naked Snake 200px-Naked Snake.jpg 00:31, 28 July 2012 (EDT)
  3. The Cheese says: Fire RUELS! The Cheese The Cheese.png 00:34, 28 July 2012 (EDT)
  4. So tough to decide! I'm probably going to go with Torchic, though. I always mimic its voice when released. Too cute. Krazy4Krash (talk) 00:40, 28 July 2012 (EDT)
  5. Blaziken was awesome back when the Fire/Fighting starter WASN'T completely overused. 24.168.107.113 10:46, 28 July 2012 (EDT)
  6. I like fire better--Bandit 11:51, 28 July 2012 (EDT)
  7. While I would normally support the water type, I do like the look of Torchic more. Plus I've never played past generation III. JamesHeartless 13:14, 28 July 2012 (EDT)
  8. Does more damage and knockback.--71.160.242.60 19:36, 28 July 2012 (EDT)
  9. I have a history with Torchics. I first got one as my starter in Emerald and nicknamed it Fireballs. After beating the game with it, I wanted to play through Emerald again with all three starters, so I got Fireballs to produce two children, one called FireballJr, the other without a name. One was then used on Emerald, while the other was used on a friend's playthrough of FireRed. At a later date, both Fireballs and FireballJr were migrated to Black, where FireballJr then had a son of its own after falling in love with a nice Leafeon, called FireballIV, also making Fireballs a Grandfather, and Ditto a Grandmother. Unnamed Torchic is yet to find itself a partner, but maybe one day, the family will expand even further. Toast Wii U Logo Transparent.pngltimatumTransparent Swadloon.png 20:02, 28 July 2012 (EDT)
  10. This is the starter that I used for my favorite Pokemon game, Emerald. Stranger 1260 Master Ball.png 09:55, 29 July 2012 (EDT)
  11. Torchic actually does damage,Piplup doesn't.--DarkVexon (talk) 20:22, 29 July 2012 (EDT)

Votes for Piplup

  1. Can PWN Torchic easily. ShupaRoehTypicalGuy.png 23:59, 27 July 2012 (EDT)
  2. Well despite the type advantage, I prefer Piplup because every time it gets called out it just shoves me off the stage. While with Torchic I can escape and continue fighting against my enemy's. Headmaster Hand (talk) 00:17, 28 July 2012 (EDT)
  3. I just like the idea of Piplup killing itself;) FishPlay (talk) 02:05, 28 July 2012 (EDT)
  4. Another tough one. Piplup's evolution line is better. Don't get me wrong Blaziken is one of my favorite fighting types, but Empoleon is [literally] much cooler. His typing is unique and he has an imperial look, which earns it points. Therefore, Piplup has my vote. Blue Ninjakoopa(Talk) 04:29, 28 July 2012 (EDT)
  5. Piplup can easily knock out characters once they get trapped!!! The Awesome 10:39, 28 July 2012 (EDT)
  6. Piplup can drag you to your doom! 204.191.139.10 10:41, 28 July 2012 (EDT)
  7. Many reasons: Its actually pretty easy to avoid Torchic's attack, Piplup can actually do a suicide KO even if the opponents damage % is low. And even though Blaziken would be better than Empoleon, Penguins are my favorite animal. And lastly, Water does super effect Fire. Dots The PSI Asian NintenNESsprite.png 11:48, 28 July 2012 (EDT)
  8. It doesn't work half of the time, but when it does... --- ReiDemon, Author Extraordinaire, 15:04, 28 July 2012 (EDT)
  9. Just look at my signature and tell me what my favorite starter is. :| Air Conditioner File:Accoolx.png 17:00, 28 July 2012 (EDT)
  10. I like his water attack. R.O.BitySonic (talk) 18:28, 28 July 2012 (EDT)
  11. Looks like a penguin. That is all.94.15.11.116 07:06, 29 July 2012 (EDT)
  12. I would say two points. One, it is generally more useful. True, it's inaccurate due to a slow start up, but if it hits is does a little damage and uncommonly KOs on regular stages and almost always does so on walk-off-blast-line stages. Two, it's a penguin, and a cute penguin at that. True, in the Pokémon series Blaziken is more useful than Empoleon, but Piplup trumps Torchic in both Pokémon AND Brawl. Davsto (talk) 13:15, 29 July 2012 (EDT)
  13. I love watching Piplup surf back and forth in a walled-in area. Toadat9021doh (talk) 14:03, 29 July 2012 (EDT)
  14. Puplup is more useful than Torchic, 'cause it drags the opponents to their doom. Smash Master 14:18, 29 July 2012 (EDT)
  15. Type advantage. Type advantage. LightningBlue405MS.png 15:53, 29 July 2012 (EDT)

Round 147: Break the Targets vs. Board the Platforms

Mario's target test.jpg
Winner!!
Break the Targets
Mario's target test.jpg

18 to 13
Mario's board the platforms.jpg
The two original bonus rounds that test characters' mobility and accuracy. Is attacking or jumping the more favoured pastime?

Votes for Break the Targets

  1. Tries to jump on platform. D'oh I missed! You don't d'oh miss as much here. ShupaRoehTypicalGuy.png 11:23, 21 July 2012 (EDT)
  2. The targets don't move at a ridiculous speed like the platforms do. Toadat9021doh (talk) 12:01, 21 July 2012 (EDT)
  3. 目標を破る ! Smash Master 12:14, 21 July 2012 (EDT)
  4. Tough choice, but I choose Break the Targets becuase it's lasted. DarkFox01: Smashing in Summer 12:33, 21 July 2012 (EDT)
  5. Board the Platforms is boring. --- ReiDemon, Author Extraordinaire, 14:07, 21 July 2012 (EDT)
  6. I haven't played the original, at least not enough to remember "Board the Platforms." JamesHeartless 23:55, 21 July 2012 (EDT)
  7. I think the fact that this has lasted through the series shows its superiority. Krazy4Krash (talk) 06:31, 22 July 2012 (EDT)
  8. I wish they would bring back character specific bonus games. This is a hard call but I'm going with Break The Targets. ChuckNorris24.png 13:36, 22 July 2012 (EDT)
  9. Target test seems to test the character attributes more. Mr. AnonAnon.pngtalk 18:53, 22 July 2012 (EDT)
  10. Young Link's target test. Pure genius. LightningBlue 21:50, 22 July 2012 (EDT)
  11. Just more interesting IMO. Naked Snake 200px-Naked Snake.jpg 02:10, 23 July 2012 (EDT)
  12. I like the creativity of many of the Break the Targets stages. However, having five difficulty levels in Brawl would have been creative if not for the fact that everyone is stuck with the same five stages. And I hope that Board the Platforms returns in SSB4. RickTommy (talk) 02:23, 23 July 2012 (EDT)
  13. Personally, I prefer Break the Targets because I believe that it provides a better challenge. FishPlay (talk) 22:54, 26 July 2012 (EDT)
  14. Break The Targets/Target Test just seems more...complete-able. Board The Platforms is fun, although certain Platforms can get really irritating to get to, like the last really far one on Jigglypuff's Targest Test stage in Super Smash Bros. 64. Also, completions of Break The Targets tend to be a bit cooler, since you have a myriad of options of how to destroy each target, and numerous strategies can result in fast WTF-completion time records. Exhibit A. Exhibit B. With the platforms, you're usually limited to whatever few jumps your character possesses. Finally, "Break The Targets" has had the most longevity in the series, having been featured in every single Smash Bros. game to date. Nevertheless, I hope both modes return in SSB4. Last but not least, Pause Abuse, anyone? Fenyx4 (talk) 22:21, 24 July 2012 (EDT)
  15. Ooh, this is hard. Although this may be biased, as I haven't played BTD, I find that it only requires movement skill, whereas this requires attacking skill, even if there is a little less movement skill. Davsto (talk) 11:33, 25 July 2012 (EDT)
  16. This was difficult, but I found I enjoyed breaking targets more than boarding platforms despite the latter being short-lived. It's not as tedious. Blue Ninjakoopa(Talk) 17:45, 25 July 2012 (EDT)
  17. I hate the other one, wish they just board it up. So much "ARGH I MISSED" moment and then plat ! Turning me into some weird goop form and then I precede to rage, and dive off the stage. 208.54.38.179 23:44, 26 July 2012 (EDT)

Half-votes

  1. The Targets has stood out more than Board the Platforms. Plus, it takes less time and more risks for taking the targets out than the platforms.-Kaizer24.185.135.102 21:56, 21 July 2012 (EDT)
  2. Never played SSB, so while I may be the target of hate from people who voted for the other side... Hate to break it to you, Board-the-Platform likers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Air Conditioner (talkcontribs) 8:46, 22 July 2012

  4. The Cheese says: I wish they would bring this back... The Cheese The Cheese.png 14:35, 21 July 2012 (EDT)
  5. Bleh. I like both of them, so BTP gets my vote because it has less of them. 24.168.107.113 20:30, 21 July 2012 (EDT)
  6. I like to board the platforms!!! The Awesome 23:02, 21 July 2012 (EDT)
  7. Tough choice, but ultimately I choose Board the Platforms since I miss it being in the other games. 110.174.90.69 01:47, 22 July 2012 (EDT)
  8. I'm not board by either of these, but what Bandit said sums everything up. Toast Wii U Logo Transparent.pngltimatumTransparent Swadloon.png 08:05, 22 July 2012 (EDT)

Well, ShupaRoeh's comment does have truth to it. Those "D'oh; I missed" Platform-missing moments can get irritating as heck - more so than missing Targets. XD Fenyx4 (talk) 22:21, 24 July 2012 (EDT)

Nice puns, ShupaRoeh and AirConditioning. Also, methinks that Race to the Finish could have used some love here (in a three-way match). Fenyx4 (talk) 22:21, 24 July 2012 (EDT)
