Chocobos (チョコボ, Chocobo) are recurring creatures from the Final Fantasy series. The Chocobo is the mascot of the Final Fantasy series alongside the Moogle.
Origin
In the Final Fantasy series, Chocobos are large birds commonly used as mounts. They are most commonly depicted as yellow, but several color variations also exist. Since their first appearance in Final Fantasy II, they have appeared in every game in the series in some way, and they could be considered one of the series' mascots. Though often domesticated, Chocobos can be found in the wild and are sometimes fought as enemies.
A specific Chocobo with a more cartoonish design, the one on which the Mii headgear is based, is the main character of the Chocobo series of spin-offs. This includes the Final Fantasy Fables set of games and the Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon trilogy; a crossover between Spike Chunsoft's Mystery Dungeon series of roguelike and the Final Fantasy series. The same cartoonish Chocobo would later appear throughout the mainline series, such as Final Fantasy XIV with Alpha.
In Super Smash Bros. 4
Chocobos are the basis of a downloadable content Mii Fighter headgear based on the main Chocobo character of the Chocobo series, most closely resembling its appearance in Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon. The Mii Costume was released in the fifth wave of DLC Mii Costumes, along with the Geno Mii Costume and Cloud, on December 16, 2015. The track "Electric de Chocobo" from Final Fantasy VII is one of many variants of the common theme for the species, and was used during the trailer although it does not appear in-game.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
As a costume
Chocobo returns as downloadable content Mii Fighter hat. The design has been updated from Super Smash Bros. 4 with a sharper beak and without the eyelashes or blushing cheeks, and takes some details from its latest appearance in the Chocobo franchise, being 2019's Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon Every Buddy!. The headgear was revealed to return during the Mr. Sakurai Presents "Sephiroth" presentation on December 17, 2020. It was released alongside the other Round 8 Mii Fighter costumes on December 22nd, 2020. The track "Electric de Chocobo" from Final Fantasy VII was used once more for the trailer, and does not appear in stages from the Final Fantasy and Super Smash Bros. categories.
Throughout the trailer, there are references to how Chocobos behave in the franchise, such as running at high speed. On the first part of the trailer, the Giant Mii Brawler wearing the hat references the recurrent Fat Chocobo, first appearing in Final Fantasy III. Followed by it, there is a reference to Chocobo Racing, where three Miis with the hat are seen running fast on the road of Big Blue. Finally, one of the Mii Brawlers wearing the hat is seen sitting down with Robin's Elwind tome in front of her, Dillon behind her and a Charizard in front. It references both Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon and Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales, with books being a common element in the latter title, this appearance of Cid matching Dillon's appearance in Ultimate, and dragons being tough foes throughout the Mystery Dungeon franchise.
Spirit
Chocobo is featured on the Chocobo & Moogle spirit in the Final Fantasy DLC Spirit Board. Unlike the Chocobo hat, the spirit instead uses its more animalistic design from the main Final Fantasy series, specifically as seen in Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Chocobo uses a Mii Brawler puppet fighter wearing an Isaac Wig and a yellow Tracksuit and is fought on the Garden of Hope stage. If the player has already purchased the Chocobo Hat DLC, then Chocobo will use a Mii Brawler puppet fighter wearing a Chocobo hat instead. He is fought along with Kirby representing the Moogle. During the battle, the Cucco items appear, referencing how the Chocobos are a species of birds raised in a farm. Also, Kirby starts off with a Bob-omb, referencing Chocobo & Moogle's Moogle Blast ability in Final Fantasy VII Remake where the Moogle throws a bomb at an enemy.

Trivia
- Chocobo was the most requested third-party character for inclusion in Super Smash Bros. Melee.[1] This does not count James Bond and Banjo & Kazooie, who were not owned by Nintendo, but whose licenses were owned at the time by Nintendo subsidiary Rare.
