Unveiled at E3 2006, Wario (ワリオ, Wario) is a character appearing in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Wearing his WarioWare outfit, Wario has an attack where he builds up flatulence over time and later releases a deadly fart called the Wario Waft, which was highly exaggerated in the trailer by making it a bigger explosion of fart than it is in the actual game, similar to the exaggeration of Dimensional Cape. What was apparent in the most recent trailer is that he walks on his tiptoes. In the small amount of footage revealed at E3 2007, Wario was shown to walk with a Mr. Game and Watch-like stop-motion gait (similar to his movement in WarioWare cutscenes).

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Unpredictable playstyle
  • Good aerial game
  • Very high horizontal aerial movement speed and easy to maneuver. (3rd fastest air speed)
  • Fast, high priority aerials.
  • Up Aerial can juggle and kill, and comes out almost instantly.
  • Bike-jumping can be used to help recover, or as an edgeguard technique.
  • Bike can be destroyed if it is on the platform to yield fast projectiles.
  • Wario Waft when fully charged deals incredible damage and knockback, and can help Wario's recovery.
  • Can Crawl.
  • Can Wariocide.
  • Powerful recovery can help him recover from a missed Wariocide.
  • Strong attacks, both in damage and knockback.
  • Can eat some incoming projectiles or items to block their attack.
  • Wario's Chomp is capable of interrupting certain moves, many of them powerful, commonly used approaches (e.g. Jigglypuff's Rollout, Peach's Side Special, Ness and Lucas when hit with their own PK Thunder, Sonic's Down & Side Specials, etc).
  • Forward smash has super armor frames.
  • Down throws can be chained together.
  • Forward Air can Wall of Pain very well because of his fast aerial maneuverability like Jigglypuff.
  • One of the most powerful recoveries in the game when all options are available (Fully charged Wario Waft and Wario Bike).
  • Has three different recoveries that can be used.
  • Corkscrew makes Wario invincible for a brief moment.
  • If used correctly, Corkscrew can move straight up or follow a diagonal path.
  • Although difficult to control, the Wario Bike, when used as Wario Man, has incredible knockback, often resulting in easy, early KOs.
  • Floaty movement is deceptive; he falls slower and floats more than other heavyweights, virtually disguising his weight class, and his air time often fools the opponent into believing he'll be KO'd by an attack that he'll survive.
  • Wario Bike can act as a shield; Wario himself must be hit to knock him off. The Bike absorbs most attacks, stops projectiles, and if angled properly (at almosta half-wheelie) can stop most long-ranged attacks, and Counters.
  • The Wario Bike, if thrown at a recovering opponent, will knock them down slightly and possibly hit them multiple times, stunning them

Cons:

  • Situational recovery. This is because if the Wario Bike is used on the ground, he can't recover with it until it is destroyed. Wario Waft has to be charged to give Wario good recovery distance.
  • Corkscrew is a poor recovery move in general.
  • Wario Waft takes two full minutes to charge, and is considerably weaker without a full charge.
  • Besides the slow forward and down tilts, attacks lack range.
  • His best killing moves are somewhat predictable and can be hard to land.
  • His own bike (or the Wheels from a broken bike) can be used against him.
  • Eating big items give Wario lag frames, such as his own bike and hurts Wario when eating explosives
  • Wario can be Star KO'd when using a fully charged Wario Waft in the air.
  • Up Smash is situational, because it only has good knockback on the final hit and it can't trap opponents in it well.

Standard Moveset

Ground Attacks

Normal

  • Neutral Attack - Left hook, then right hook. Decent knockback, but very short ranged.
  • Dash Attack - Trips and falls flat on his face, sliding a small bit. Fairly weak.
  • Strong Side - Punches a large fist forward. Fairly slow, but one of Wario's few attacks with any range
  • Strong Down - Stabs his index finger at the ground in front of him. Again slow, but again one of Wario's few ranged attacks
  • Strong Up - Raises both hands above his head, raising the roof. Decent vertical launcher for combos

Smash

  • Forward Smash - Shoulder charge from Wario Land, grants him super armor.
  • Up Smash - Head grows as Wario spins, hitting multiple times with the head.
  • Down Smash - Spins rapidly on the ground, like a breakdance kick, except hitting with his head, after the move lasts a bit, it will gradually get weaker until the move is done and only hits one time.

Other

  • Ledge Attack -
  • 100% Ledge Attack -
  • Floor Attack -

Aerial Attacks

  • Neutral Aerial - Extends his hands to slap, and spins in place, a quick move to use in the air.
  • Forward Aerial - Sticks his foot a short distance forward. Short ranged and very little damage or knockback, but very high speed and priority. Best used for "wall of pain" style attacking.
  • Back Aerial - Throws his head backwards, hitting with it, entire body horizontal. If he lands while performing this, he will fall onto his back.
  • Up Aerial - Claps above his head. High knockback, can KO easily and low delay.
  • Down Aerial - Turns upside down and spins, drilling with his head, decent knockback and deals 16% damage, cannot DI out of and best used with a shorthop and then a non-fast fall down+A.

Grabs and Throws

  • Pummel - Punches them in the gut.
  • Forward Throw - Wild Swing-Ding from Wario World; spins foe around and throws him/her forward.
  • Back Throw - Hits them backward with his butt.
  • Up Throw - Throws them into the air and jumps up, headbutting them.
  • Down Throw - Throws them on the ground and then jumps on top of them, knocking them a little away.

Role in The Subspace Emissary

After Kirby does battle with Petey Piranha, one of the cages in which Petey holds either Princess Zelda or Princess Peach will break, depending on which cage the player damaged more while battling Petey. The Princess who the player saves will escape with the player; Wario traps the other in the form of a trophy and takes off with the trophy on his shoulder. He is revealed to be a member of the Subspace Army. Wario then hunts down Lucas in an abandoned town, dispatching Porky to corner him and weaken him. Porky is defeated by Lucas with the help of Ness, but Wario appears and captures Ness. Wario then loses his trophies to King Dedede after he is ambushed by Waddle Dees. Wario tracks Lucas and his partner, the Pokemon Trainer, down and fights them. Wario is defeated and left behind. When Galleom's Subspace Bomb detonates, the area of Subspace expands and absorbs Wario's trophy. Wario appears at the end and aids the heroes in their battle against Tabuu.

Although he works for the Subspace Army, he had no specific alligence to Master Hand, only following his orders because he enjoyed doing so.

Event Matches

Event 4: Cleaning House in Skyworld- The player controls Pit, and you have to destroy the platforms in Skyworld while Wario both attacks you and inadvertantly helps destroy the platforms. [1]

Event 19: Wario Bros.- The player controls Wario and has two lives, the players mission is to kill Mario and Luigi, who are both on a team and both have two lives as well. After beating this event you unlock the Mario Bros. stage.

Strategies & Tips

Save the Wario Waft until it is fully charged, because it's fairly useless without a full one. If you are high on damage, you might want to hold it longer until you are knocked off to recover, because at full charge, it launches Wario much higher than his Corkscrew abillity. Also, if you happen to be in a tight spot, and can't manage to lay a K.O., use it when fully charged on unsuspecting victims in the heat of battle. It it best used when an opponent is above you, because foes need to touch Wario during the waft, not the gas itself. Finally, consider saving it for use as Wario-Man if Final Smashes are enabled: a fully-charged Wario Waft will instantly KO most opponents as Wario-Man.

Make yourself versatile. Although Wario does best in the air, he is also a reliable fighter on the ground, so mix your styles to confuse the opponent.

Be wary of your Wario Bike lying around. Make sure you can always rely in it for recovery, so don't leave it in bad spots. If you must absolutely use it when recovering, then it would be best to use Chomp and eat the bike, instead of wasting time and attempting to destroy it first if it happens to be on the ground already. Be careful not to let the Bike get left off the side of the screen on a horizontal, nonmoving stage like Bridge of Eldin or Flat Zone 2-if this happens, you will have to perform the risky operation of going to the very edge of the screen and looking for the bike.

Eat everything. Chomping items clears the field of items that can be used against you. A bumper or Unira, even one already set, can be chomped out of your way. The Chomp can be used to defend against thrown projectiles,-the 6% for eating a thrown Bob-omb or Smart Bomb is negligible compared to the damage the items would normally deal, while additionally hurting anyone around him-, which includes several characters' special moves. Wario can eat Link's/Toon Link's bombs, Snake's grenades, Peach's turnips, Diddy Kong's Banana Peels and Peanuts, King Dedede's Waddle Dees and Waddle Doos, and R.O.B.'s Gyros. Chomping the Bike when you're not using it gets it off the screen without producing projectiles that can be used against you. Chomp is a handy way to interrupt certain moves-it can even be used to interrupt some characters in mid-Smash, such as Toon Link when he steps forward or Sonic's dsmash. Chomping is also useful for stopping moves such as Luigi's Green Missile or Pikachu's Skull Bash. Since Chomp counts as a grab move, it cannot be countered by Lucario, Marth, or Ike.

If you're facing other Warios and you're a Wario yourself, you can take their bikes and ride it, use this advantage to leave other Wario players useless of using their bikes, take the chance when you find a bike lying around.

Snake's Codec Message

Snake: This guy kinda gives me the creeps.

Colonel: That's Wario, Snake.

C: Wario first appeared as Mario's rival, but he really made his name in the WarioWare games.

C: Watch out for Wario's Bite. It's not just damage you take from it.

S: What do you mean, Colonel?

C: Wario loves garlic. He eats whole cloves of it day and night.

C: So try not to get caught in his mouth. Once that smell gets on you, it'll stick to you for a while.

S: ...That's a scary thought.

C: He also attacks by farting. He can fart to fly around, too.

S: By... farting - Are you kidding me?!

C: Sadly no, I am not kidding. If his belly starts to bulge, watch out.

Special Movements

Taunts

Side: Dances with his rear facing the screen.

Down: Makes two separate Wario signs, then puts them together while yelling "Wah! Wah! Wah!".

Up: Laughs, drops his jaw, then pushes it up again.

While riding Wario Bike: Wario does his signature "W" sign at the screen, then picks his nose with one hand. Another one is when he does his wheelie, where he shows off his muscles on one arm.

On-Screen Appearance

Crashes in sideways on his bike, jumps off, and his bike explodes while he poses.

Victory Pose

Victory Theme: Wario Series Theme

  • He does a donut on his bike, makes a "W" sign with his hand, saying "Yes!", then pulls on his mustache and makes the "W" sign again, process repeats.
  • He laughs gloatingly and then falls over, rolling on his back.
  • Pats his belly, releasing a fart that after smelling, results in an "Oooh..." from Wario.

Wii Remote Choice

Does his signature belly laugh.

  • WarioWare, Inc. Medley

Costumes

File:Overalls Wario.jpg
Wario in his overalls.

Wario has a "special outfit": which is his "classic" overalls look in most of his adventures. Additionally, one of Wario's color schemes appears as one of Mario's original "red-overalls" look. This somewhat mirrors the fact that Mario has an outfit that looks like Wario's (which he still does in Brawl). Wario is the only character who has 2 different outfits (a biker-type outfit and his classic overalls look) with 6 color schemes each, totaling up to 12 possible costumes. This also allows him to have 2 changes for every color in Team Brawl.

Trivia

  • Wario can be Star KO'd using a fully charged Wario Waft in the air.
  • Wario is the only character who can be Star KO'd by using an attack, excluding third jumps in Super Smash Bros.
  • Wario uses garlic to transform into Wario-Man. In Wario World for the GameCube it only recovers health and does not transform him into anything. This doesn't look like the "funky" garlic used in WarioWare: Touched! that transformed Wario into Wario-Man for the final set of microgames, either.
  • On the stage Big Blue, Wario-Man on his bike can outrun the cars, until SDing off the right side of the stage. Additionally, Wario's normal bike can keep up with the race cars by doing a wheelie on the track.
  • Wario has the most outfits of any character in Brawl or any past game with 12 possible.
  • Due to having a taunt on his bike, Wario has the most taunts in the game.
  • Wario is the only character to have a Victory Theme based off of an upcoming game.
