Toon Link (トゥーンリンク, Toon Link) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He was officially confirmed as playable on June 12th, 2018.
Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4
Aesthetics
- As with all veterans returning from Smash 4, Toon Link's model features a more subdued color scheme. His clothing features simple woven and stitched detailing, similar to his design in Brawl, though his hair remains clay-like.
- Some of the textures of Toon Link's face have been modified: his brow is more furrowed, and his mouth is now represented by a black dash, making it look less organic. Overall, he appears more cartoonish as a result.
- Like many returning characters, Toon Link is more expressive. He now sports angrier expressions by default.
- Toon Link's down taunt now has him visibly sweating.
- Toon Link's side taunt has been modified, appearing to have a more surprised expression and pose.
- Toon Link's victory pose where he conducts with the Wind Waker has been modified, now ending with his pose from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker‘s Japanese boxart.
Attributes
- Like all characters, Toon Link's jumpsquat animation now takes three frames to complete.
Ground Attacks
- Toon Link strikes a pose at the end of his neutral attack.
- Forward smash has been changed to a single upward swing, preventing Toon Link from following up on the move if he misses.
- Up smash no longer has a late or sourspot hitbox, significantly improving its consistency and KO potential.
- Up smash has a slightly altered animation. Toon Link slightly turns after leaping.
- As a result, the move now appears to have small blind spots at the end of the swing.
Aerial Attacks
- All aerials have significantly less landing lag.
- Most notably, Back aerial has significantly lower landing lag, allowing for more combo potential.
- Up aerial has more active frames.
- Up aerial has an altered animation where Toon Link ducks more. This lowers his hurtbox and allows him to hit opponents beneath him more effectively, similar to Link's up aerial.
Special Moves
- Spin Attack's sword trails are blue, now matching how they were in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.
- Grounded Spin Attack deals more knockback, and now hits opponents horizontally, improving its KO potential.
Role in World of Light
Toon Link was absent in the World of Light trailer, though he presumably became a spirit alongside the rest of the galaxy (sans Kirby) when Galeem unleashed its beams of light.
