—Introduction Tagline

Isabelle (しずえ, Shizue) is a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The secretary for the player character in Animal Crossing: New Leaf and de facto mascot of the Animal Crossing franchise, she was announced as a newcomer at the end of the September 13th, 2018 Nintendo Direct. Despite sharing a few moves with Villager, Isabelle is not an Echo Fighter, and the bulk of her moveset appears to be unique.

Attributes

An icon used in notice templates. NOTE: SmashWiki is not speculative. Please refrain from adding detailed data values derived from pre-release gameplay footage, such as the E3 demo. Such data (damage values, launch trajectories, frame data, etc.) are subject to change before the official release.
  • Isabelle's moveset shares a few similarities to Villager, such as a move similar to Villager's dash attack, the use of Pocket, and grabbing with a net, but she is otherwise a unique fighter.
  • She wears her Spring/Summer outfit by default, but can also wear her Autumn/Winter outfit.

Known moveset

Standard Attacks

  • An attack where she swings a broom overhead, presumably her up tilt.
  • An attack involving a toy hammer, possibly her forward tilt.
  • Her dash attack is similar to Villager's, but with an empty jar instead of a potted sapling.
  • Like Villager, she can also grab and throw opponents with a net.

Smash Attacks

  • Her forward smash fires a party popper forward.
  • Her up smash erects a yield sign in front of her.
  • Her down smash is a water splash attack to the front and back with a bucket.

Aerial Attacks

  • An aerial attack where she twirls pom-poms over her head, presumably her neutral aerial.

Special Moves

  • Isabelle can use Pocket, seemingly identically to its function as Villager's neutral special.
  • Isabelle makes use of a Fishing Rod for her side special[1], grabbing opponents and pulling them closer to her before throwing them. Fishing Rod can also aid in Isabelle's recovery, presumably as a tether recovery.
  • One of her moves (presumably her down special) involves burying Lloid as a sort of landmine that drags opponents into the air when triggered.
  • Isabelle's recovery has her lounging on a bench with a pair of bunny-ear balloons for her variant of Balloon Trip.
  • Her Final Smash, functioning similarly to Villager's, catches opponents under the construction of the Town Hall before it blows up with the enemies inside.

Taunts

  • A taunt where Isabelle waves her arms and jumps for joy, based off of the Complete emote.
  • A taunt where Isabelle claps in place, based off of the Delight emote.
  • A taunt where Isabelle cheers and raises her hand.

On-Screen Apperance

  • An on-screen appearance where Isabelle comes out of the Town Hall cheering, before it shrinks into a puff of smoke.

Trivia

  • Isabelle is the fourth character to be announced in Ultimate that was previously featured as a Mii costume in Super Smash Bros. 4, the others being Inkling, Chrom, and King K. Rool.
  • The Nintendo Direct that revealed Isabelle as a playable fighter was supposed to air on September 6th, 2018. However, an earthquake struck Hokkaidō, Japan that day, killing 41 residents, displacing countless others, and cutting off power to the entire island. Its aftermath prompted Nintendo to postpone the Direct—and by extension, news of Isabelle's inclusion in Ultimate—by one week, out of respect for those affected by the tremor. This makes Isabelle the only playable character in the series' history whose reveal was explicitly delayed for any given reason.
  • Isabelle's reveal trailer initially appeared to be a reveal trailer for a new Nintendo Switch installment of the Animal Crossing series, and was followed by an actual teaser trailer confirming such a title for 2019.
    • Tom Nook is even seen watching Isabelle's own trailer on his computer, before telling the audience he has to get back to work, in order to prepare for the upcoming game.
  • In her reveal trailer, Isabelle opens a letter inviting her to join Smash Bros. that is enclosed in an envelope with a wax seal in the shape of the Super Smash Bros. logo. This is a callback to a similar letter found by Villager in his mailbox in the first trailer for Super Smash Bros. 4.
  • There is an error on Isabelle's page on the Smash Bros. Ultimate site where her Animal Crossing symbol is the same color as Villager's (a dark green), instead of chartreuse, her background color.
  • Isabelle is the first newcomer in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to be from a franchise that had their first character introduced in Super Smash Bros. 4. Her inclusion also makes Animal Crossing the only franchise introduced in Smash 4 to feature multiple playable characters.
