Mushroom Kingdom II (いにしえの王国II, Ancient Kingdom II) is an unlockable stage in Super Smash Bros. Melee. It is unlocked by obtaining the Birdo trophy. Luigi is fought when unlocked here, even if the Birdo trophy has not been obtained. It is Luigi and Peach's home stage. In All-Star mode, this stage is played on when the player faces Dr. Mario and any of his teammates.

Contrary to what its name suggests, this stage is derived from Super Mario Bros. 2s mariowiki (specifically the version seen in the 16-bit remakes of SMB2), rather than the Mushroom Kingdom itself.  It is made up of 3 sections. There are two upper platforms on either side of the stage and one lower one in the middle. The center platform is actually 2 platforms connected by a log. There is a pit on either side of the middle platform.

Logs come from the waterfall and fall into the pit. One can jump on them, but they fall rapidly. On occasion, Birdo will appear from the side of the screen and lob eggs into the fray. Birdo shoots either one or three eggs across the stage. These eggs can be caught aerially, and if thrown at an opponent, do massive damage and knockback - up to 28%. The eggs can be broken (only after being thrown; attacking the eggs simply knocks them off) and sometimes have items in them. Birdo can also be knocked away with one of its own eggs, just as in the original game, but Birdo can also be defeated from normal attacks. If Birdo takes enough damage, however, it retreats. Pidgits will fly erratically over the center on a carpet, which one can jump on.

The majority of Mushroom Kingdom II is based around World 1-1 of Super Mario Bros. 2. In World 1-1, there is a point where the player must jump on logs in order to complete the level. The logs in Melee also can be used as platforms as they go down the waterfall. Mushroom Kingdom II also features two enemies that appeared in Super Mario Bros. 2: Pidgit and Birdo. A Pidget is a small bird that controls a magic carpet and tries to attack the player. The player can defeat Pidgets just by simply jumping on it and throwing it off the carpet, which the player can now control. A Birdo is a boss that appears in the last level of every World. Its main method of attack is to shoot eggs at the player.
Contrary to what its name suggests, this stage is not derived from any version of the Mushroom Kingdom: rather, it originates from Super Mario Bros. 2s mariowiki. The graphical style is based on the SNES port of Super Mario Bros. 2 included in mariowiki, rather than the original NES version.

When mariowiki was released for the SNES, it contained Super Mario Bros. 2 and three other Mario games with updated 16-bit graphics. In Melee, the design of the stage is based around the 16-bit version rather than the original 8-bit version.
Waterfalls are a common background element in the source game, and often have logs coming down from them which can be used as temporary platforms.

The music that plays on this stage is the original 8-bit version of the track that played in all outside stages of Super Mario Bros. 2. When the time runs low in Melee, the track is changed to Super Mario Bros. 2s boss theme.
Pidgit are flying enemies, small birds which ride on magic carpets. When they are defeated, the carpet can be ridden and controlled by the player, though it vanishes after a short while.

Birdo is a recurring boss, fought as the final enemy in several levels. It attacks by shooting eggs which can be grabbed and thrown at it, damaging and eventually defeating it.

Mushroom Kingdom II (いにしえの王国II, Ancient Kingdom II) is an unlockable stage in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Luigi is fought here for his unlocking battle, even if this stage itself is not unlocked yet. In All-Star mode, this is where the player faces Dr. Mario and any of his teammates.

Stage layout

Birdo shooting an egg.

The stage has three hard platforms, all of which reach the bottom blast line: two at the sides, and a lower one in the middle (which is actually made up of two pieces of ground connected by a log).

Logs continuously come down from the waterfall in the background, acting as temporary platforms which quickly fall down into the two pits on the sides of the center platform.

Occasionally, Birdo appears from either side of the screen ans shoots eggs, either one or three. These eggs can be attacked, knogking them off, or caught aerially: if thrown at an opponent they deal massive damage and knockback, up to 28%. After being caught and thrown the eggs can be broken, and sometimes contain items. Birdo is susceptible to attacks, and if damaged enough it retreats.

Pidgits fly erratically over the middle part on a carpet, which can be jumped on.

Tournament legality

This stage is banned in competitive play, due to having walk-off blast lines and Birdo disrupting gameplay.

Origin

A part of World 1-1, as seen in the Super Mario All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros. 2.

Contrary to what its name suggests, this stage is not derived from any version of the Mushroom Kingdom: rather, it originates from Super Mario Bros. 2's Subcon. The graphical style is based on the SNES port of Super Mario Bros. 2 included in Super Mario All-Stars, rather than the original NES version.

Waterfalls are a common background element in the source game, and often have logs coming down from them which can be used as temporary platforms.

Trivia

 • This is one of the only two stages to change music when the timer reaches 20 seconds, the other being Mushroom Kingdom.
 • Mushroom Kingdom II is the only stage that shares alternate music, Dr. Mario, with another stage: Mushroom Kingdom.
 • When a new file is started in Melee, the player automatically receives one random trophy among those immediately obtainable in the lottery. Since the Birdo trophy is one of them, it is possible for the Mushroom Kingdom II stage to be immediately unlocked upon starting a new file, with the corresponding unlock message being received right when the game starts up.
