Sumabato SP 53 was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate major held in Daito City, Osaka, Kansai on November 30th, 2024.

Tournament summary

This tournament is firstly known for Raki's victory. Not only does it makes Raki the second new major winner this season alongside Asimo, it's also the first Steve main to win a major outside of Acola since Onin at Super Smash Con 2022 in August 2022, more than 2 years ago. Since he also used his Kazuya to win crucial sets, it's also the first Kazuya player to win a major since Riddles at Collision 2023, around a year and a half ago. After making his first major top 8 at the previous Sumabato, #13 seed Raki made his first upset by defeating #4 seed Lv.1 3-2 (Upset Factor 4). He entered top 8 winner side after winning his set versus #21 seed 33Peranbox 3-0. In winner semifinals, he swiftly defeated #16 seed Taikei 3-0. He then made his most impressive upset in winner's finals where he won the set against #2 Doramigi 3-1 (UF 6). Lastly, he rematched Taikei's Sonic in grand finals, and 3-0'd him again, including a three stock in the last game.

But outside of Raki's run, this tournament is famous for it's important number of upsets, even compared to others Japanese majors, as only 2 of the top 8 seeds made top 8, and none of them entered grand finals. #2 Doramigi is the only one to enter top 8 on winner side, but lost to Raki and Taikei 1-3 (UF 6) for 3rd. #8 Navy continued his streak of good performances (being the only top 8 seed to outplaced his seed), as he lost in winner's quarters and loser's semi-finals to Taikei, both in game 5 sets, for 4th. Similar to Raki, Taikei made the best non-Sonix Sonic performance since KEN's 7th place at Kagaribi 12 in May 2024. He made one of the biggest upset of the tournament by defeating the first seed Raru 3-2 (UF 7), as well as upsetting Navy twice, #11 seed Rarikkusu 3-0 and lastly Doramigi to made grand finals loser's side against Raki. Therefore, it's the first time that the two grand finalists of a major weren't top 8 seeds since Crown the Third in June 2023.

The other non-top 8 seeds to enter top 8 are #11 seed Rarikkusu, who finished 5th after upsetting both Raru (UF 6) and #3 seed Snow (UF 4) in 3-1's, losing to #22 seed Tsuna 1-3 and Taikei, #30 seed Shion, who made his first major top 8 after scoring two upsets over Snow (UF 7) and #14 seed Gorioka, losing to Tsuna and Rarikkusu in game 5 sets for 7th, and lastly #77 seed Toatti, a Sora main who made the longest loser's run of the tournament. After losing his second set to #52 Mokumoku 1-2, he won 9 sets in a row, upsetting #24 MairudonaH.O (UF 4), Gorioka (UF 5) and lastly 33Peranbox (UF 4), all in 3-1, before losing to Navy 1-3 to reach 7th place, the first Sora main to made top 8 at a major in Japan since Kameme's 4th place at Umebura SP 10, almost a year ago. He is the lowest seed to reach top 8 at a major since Atreus 5th place at Get On My Level 2023 as the 86th seed.

The 6 top 8 seeds who failed to reach top 8 are #1 seed Raru, who lost to Taikei and Rarikkusu for 17th, his worst result since his 25th place at Kowloon 12 with Kagaribi, #3 seed Snow, who lost to Shion and Rarikkusu for 13th, #4 seed Lv.1, losing to Raki and #28 seed Furararamen 1-3 (UF 6) for 13th, #5 seed Umeki, losing sets to Furararamen 2-3 (UF 5) and #13 seed Nyonoknb 1-3 for 25th, #6 seed Jogibu, losing to #123 seed DEAR 1-2 (UF 9, the biggest of the tournament) and #17 seed Yone_pi 0-3 (UF 4) for 65th, and lastly #7 seed Karaage, losing sets to #23 seed DieGorou 0-3 (UF 3) and Navy 0-3 for 9th.

Outside of top 8 seeds, the others top seeds to underperform are #15 seed Fui, as he lost his first set of the event against #242 seed Shiomasa 1-2 (UF 8), before being eliminated by #44 seed Crete 1-3 (UF 3), #17 seed Yone_pi, who lost to #48 seed Avaru and #43 seed Rokki, both in game 5 sets, #18 seed Kome, being defeated by #47 seed Niyae and #63 seed LiiMac (UF 3), also both in game 5 sets, and all three being eliminated at 49th, and #25 seed Rizeasu, losing to #89 seed Lux 0-3 (UF 3) and #51 seed CLAW 2-3 for 65th.
