CEO 2023 was a Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate superregional held in Daytona Beach, Florida, from June 23rd-25th, 2023. Smash 64 was held as an official side event.
Summary of events
Melee
Plup, despite being relatively inactive in the tournament scene, claimed victory in his native state of Florida, defeating Wizzrobe in winners' and grand finals; Plup won back-to-back CEO titles and became the second repeat Melee champion of CEO (after Hungrybox). Wizzrobe, another relatively inactive player, finished 2nd, upsetting #1 seed Jmook in winners' semis and defeating Hungrybox in losers' finals. Panda finished an impressive 4th place, upsetting Hungrybox 3-2 in winners' quarters.
Ultimate
The tournament's most notable upsets were #29 seed YoseFu over #4 seed MuteAce (upset factor 6) and #32 seed TM7_ZAP over #1 seed Riddles (upset factor 9). Despite the upset, Riddles made a long run in the Loser's bracket, defeating 8 players to face fellow Team Liquid player Dabuz in Grand Finals. Riddles took the first set 3-0, however Dabuz held Riddles off in the reset 3-1, taking his first national-level victory in Ultimate. Dabuz's victory was celebrated by many, as not only was Riddles a notable bracket demon for Dabuz, but he had finished second in many national-level and major events, results which became running jokes in the community.
