The minus button (or - button) refers to the small button on the left side of the Wii Remote, Classic Controller, the button on the right side of the Wii U GamePad and Wii U Pro Controller, or the dark gray button on the left side of the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con and Pro Controller. On the Wii Remote, Classic Controller, Wii U GamePad, and Wii U Pro Controller, the button is the color of the controller shell.
Overview
The minus button often has the word "select" under it, as it is frequently used to select options. When using a horizontal Wii Remote in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, the minus button is used to grab. When using the left Joy-Con horizontally in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the minus button acts as the equivalent to the + button. The minus button does nothing on other controllers.
Nintendo Switch hardware version 10.0.0 introduced the ability to map the functionality of any button to any other button from the console options menu, further diversifying how the minus button can be used in Ultimate.
