'''King Dedede''' ({{ja|デデデ大王|Dedede Daiō}} ''Great King Dedede'') is a character from the [[Kirby (universe)|''Kirby'' series]]. Since debuting in ''[[Kirby's Dream Land]]'' as a full-fledged villain, King Dedede has steadily transitioned into both Kirby's "arch-frenemy"<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.nintendo.com/amiibo/detail/king-dedede-amiibo-super-smash-bros-series|title=King Dedede amiibo Figure - Super Smash Bros.}}</ref> and an anti-hero, as he willingly assists or directly allies with Kirby on a number of occasions for the greater good while maintaining their rivalry.
'''His Majehsty King Dedede''' ({{ja|デデデ大王|Dedede Daiō}} ''Greatestest King Dedede'') (also known as '''The King''', 'cuz that's what he is) is undisputable king of the [[Kirby (universe)|''Kirbeh'' series]]. Since de-butt-in' in ''[[Kirby's Dream Land|Kirbeh's Dream Land]]'' as the main charactah, The King has kept on keepin' on bein' the prime specimin of the whole series, and ain't no one got a bigger base o' fans than he do.

After cameo appearances in ''[[Super Smash Bros.]]'' as a background character and in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]'' as a [[trophy]], King Dedede transitioned into a playable character in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Brawl]]'', and has remained as such since then.
After only putterin' about in ''[[Super Smash Bros.]]'' an' ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]'', The King took his rightful throne in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Brawl]]'' as a playahbul charactah, and has stayed there evah since.

[[File:KDL2ArtKingDedede.png|left|thumb|150px|Ahtwahk of The King from ''Kirbeh's Dream Land 2''.]]
King Dedede is a rotund, blue, penguin-like bird who possesses an egocentric and selfish disposition, which is best exemplified by his status as the self-proclaimed king of {{s|wikirby|Dream Land}}. His signature attire consists of a red, regal coat with white fur trim and his personal emblem, a stylized version of his hand striking the V sign, embossed on the back. He also wears yellow mitten-like gloves, a red {{s|wikipedia|tuque}} with a white fur pom-pom and gold crown-like brim, and a sash featuring blue and white trim with red and yellow tessellated triangles.
His Majehsty King Dedede is a healthy plump specimin of King that's blue in colah, and the King of Dream Land fer a bunch o' completely valid reasons tha' don' need elaboratin'. The King wears a royahl red coat with whaiyt furry trim and the symbol of his Kingdom on the back in yeller. The King also got yeller mitt'ns, a red floppy-cap-tuke-thing with a cute lil' pom-pom, an' a designah sash of triangles.

King Dedede's powers are vaguely similar to [[Kirby]]'s; he is able to [[inhale]] enemies and spit them out as projectiles (but cannot copy a foe's ability like Kirby), or inhale air in order to puff himself up and float, the latter of which he learned after rigorous training following his first defeat at Kirby's hands. Outside of this, Dedede wields a large wooden mallet as his signature weapon; this mallet is depicted in some games as having special features built into it, such as a powerful jet engine, or the ability to fire missiles or a chargeable laser.
The King's most fearsome weapon is his big ol' hammah, an' he be a fool to leave home wit'out it. Not only is it good for just straight-up clobberin', but bein' the genius he is, The King also got installed a bunch o' science gadgets fer makin' it shoot flames or missl's. 'Sides from that, The King can also puff up 'n' float just like that copycat of a fool Kirbeh, an' loves givin' 'em the ol' suck-up-'n'-spit-out routine. 'Course, The King is already perfect, so he ain't about copyin' foes' powers.

In early ''Kirby'' games and spin-off titles, Dedede is depicted as the central antagonist. Beginning with ''{{iw|wikirby|Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards}}'', however, he slowly transitioned into an anti-hero, although he remains the most well-known antagonist in the series. In fact, a common misconception about King Dedede is that he is an "evil" character. He seems to be more selfish than evil, and appears to otherwise have a good heart. King Dedede's misdeeds, driven by greed, range from stealing food from the Dream Land residents in ''Kirby's Dream Land'' to stealing all the stars from the sky in ''{{iw|wikirby|Kirby's Dream Course}}''. In other games, such as ''{{iw|wikirby|Kirby's Dream Land 3}}'' and ''{{iw|wikirby|Kirby: Triple Deluxe}}'', Dedede's evil actions are not from his own volition; he is manipulated by a greater evil through mind control or possession. His intentions are also occasionally misguided; in ''[[Kirby's Adventure]]'', Dedede breaks the [[Star Rod]] (the power source of the [[Fountain of Dreams]]) to protect Dream Land from the evil [[Nightmare]], but its inhabitants are unable to dream as a consequence.
Fer some reason, it's a wide belief that The King is a bad guy. This c'ain't be more further from the truth. Fer starters, anyt'in' actually "evil" that The King does is usually 'cuz some big-headed sorry sack o' shadows decided "y'know what, ah'm jelly-ous of The King, I'll go grab his body real quick for my nefarious deeds". Bein' as incredibl' as he is, The King gets targetted fer this sort of thing quite a lot, so his reputati'n's a bit on the sandy side. But even then, that accursed Kirbeh is somehow real dang good at paintin' The King's good deeds in black light. It weren't The King's fault tha' [[Nightmare|Naightmare]] was doin' evil things 'round the side, but he decided it was, and made all The King's hard work go down the sewers for it.

King Dedede's relationship with Kirby also varies, from a rival to a partner. While he appears to view Kirby with general annoyance or reluctant friendship, Kirby himself bears no such grudge. The duo partake in friendly speed-eating contests in ''[[Kirby Super Star]]''<nowiki>'s</nowiki> Gourmet Race sub-game, and Dedede even teams up with Kirby as a playable character in ''Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards'', ''{{iw|wikirby|Kirby's Return to Dream Land}}'', and ''{{iw|wikirby|Kirby Star Allies}}''. In the anime ''{{iw|wikirby|Kirby: Right Back at Ya!}}'', he is much more malicious and determined to defeat Kirby, but he rarely succeeds due to his simple-mindedness. However, he retains a form of respect for Kirby, which he rarely shows.
But The King's nothin' if not compassionayt. Sure, he hates Kirbeh as much as anyone with pennies fer a thought should. But The King ain't The King if he's gonna be so dumb-as-rocks as to not let Kirbeh get away with some things now and again. Kirbeh's useful to keep around and direct towards them universe-hatin' threats, after alls. He's even a decent rival in them eatin' contests from [[Kirby Super Star|Kirbeh Supah Stah]], when he ain't cheatin'.

In ''Smash Bros.'', he is voiced by his creator, [[Masahiro Sakurai]], who also voiced Dedede in ''Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards''. His appearance in the ''Smash Bros.'' series is primarily influenced by ''Kirby Super Star''. However, there are additional details original to the series, such as his kimono-like robes and mechanically-enhanced hammer. This design later influenced other ''Kirby'' games, including ''{{iw|wikirby|Kirby Mass Attack}}'' and ''Kirby's Return to Dream Land''.
The King is oft'n voiced by th' one-and-only [[Masahiro Sakurai]].

In ''Super Smash Bros.'', King Dedede makes a cameo in the background of {{SSB|Dream Land}}. However, according to a page on ''[[Smabura-Ken]]'' (the game's official Japanese website), King Dedede, alongside [[Bowser]] and [[Mewtwo]], was [[Beta elements (SSB)|planned]] to be included as a playable character, but was cut. Aside from this, no other information is available.
In ''Super Smash Bros.'', His Majehsty King Dedede sneeks a peek in the background of {{SSB|Dream Land}}. Accordin' to [[Smabura-Ken|the official word]], The King was s'posed to be in the actual game but didn' make the cut fer some reason 'r oth'r. King Dedede is a playable character in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Brawl]]'', making him the third playable character from the ''Kirby'' series. He wields his trademark hammer, swinging it in most of his standard attacks, like the {{SSBB|Ice Climbers}}, and has very powerful hammer-based attacks. His special moves are {{b|Inhale|King Dedede}}, [[Waddle Dee Toss]], [[Super Dedede Jump]], and [[Jet Hammer]]. Inhale is very similar to Kirby's trademark move, but King Dedede lacks the ability to copy abilities. Waddle Dee Toss lets him throw his minions at foes, sometimes producing not only [[Waddle Dee]]s, but also more deadly [[Waddle Doo]]s and [[Gordo]]s. It is also possible for Dedede to throw out capsules containing items.
His Majehsty King Dedede finally steps to it in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Brawl]]'', joinin' [[Kirby|Kirbeh]] and [[Meta Knight]] as reppin' the series. The King wields his trademark hammah with [[Jet Hammer|extreme prejudice]], can [[Inhale (King Dedede)|suck in foes]] for spittin', [[Waddle Dee Toss|deploys]] his beloved subjects into the field for extra support, and uses his [[Super Dedede Jump|crowd-pleasin' supahjump]] to recover no mattah how far some oaf knocks him askew.

Super Dedede Jump is an effective recovery move, sending King Dedede high into the air, then crashing into the ground to damage foes. He can also cancel out of doing this. Finally, King Dedede mechanizes his hammer with Jet Hammer. The hammer's power is charged up by holding the special attack button, and then released for a mighty swing. King Dedede incurs damage after charging for too long, however. His dash attack, forward smash, Inhale and Super Dedede Jump all come from ''[[Kirby's Dream Land]]''.

Like other playable characters, King Dedede retains his core design, albeit greatly enhanced graphically; most notably, his usually-exposed girth (other than his patterned waistband) is now covered by fine robes of a similar color, making his overall wear resemble a kimono. Additionally, his alternate costumes not only change the color of his outfit, but the design on his waistband, as well.

King Dedede currently ranks 12th on the [[tier list]] in C+ tier. King Dedede possesses a powerful chain grab which can infinite most lower tier characters, complemented by his fast and long reaching grab. He overcomes his poor speed through his high vertical endurance, has one of the best recoveries in the game, and has a surprisingly strong aerial game with a good back aerial.
The King is a force t' be reckoned with on the battlefield, mostly 'cause of his signature chain grab that invalidates suckers by itself, and it's so dang tootin' difficult to remove him from the arena that tryin' to KO him just ain't feasible fer most foes.

[[File:King Dedede SSB4.png|thumb|right|The King, as he appears in ''Super Smash Bros. 4''.]]
King Dedede returns as a playable character in ''Super Smash Bros. 4''. He has a more cartoonish look than his appearance in ''Super Smash Bros. Brawl'', reminiscent of his appearance in ''Kirby: Right Back at Ya!''. He has gained a new Final Smash, [[Dedede Burst]].
His Majehsty King Dedede is back in ''Super Smash Bros. 4''. Some o' his tricks are a mite different, such as only [[Gordo Throw|t'rowin' Gordos]], but overall he's the same deadly hammerin' hustle o' bustle 'round any parts. Some say he ain't no good no more, but there's the trick: ''some''.

King Dedede has seen a large fall from his previous [[tier list]] spot for ''Brawl'', now ranking 52nd out of 55 characters for ''SSB4''. While still maintaining his high power and [[disjointed]] reach with his hammer, he lost his effective [[chain grab]], a technique removed from ''SSB4''. This removes what made him so effective in ''Brawl''. His back aerial was also changed for the worse, no longer being as versatile as it once was. King Dedede also has a new side special: [[Gordo Throw]]. Since he now throws only Gordos, the new move has consistent power compared to the random nature of Waddle Dee Toss. However, this new attack can also be a hindrance for Dedede, as the Gordos are easily sent back to him by [[reflectors]] or any attack that does 2% or higher. His large size also makes him vulnerable to combos, as well as camping, due to his slow movement. Due to the loss of his effectiveness from ''Brawl'', Dedede is regarded generally poorly in competitive play despite some notably high tournament results from players like {{Sm|Big D}} and {{Sm|Zaki}}.

==Trivia==
==Trivia==
*King Dedede's name is pronounced in two ways: the English, Korean, Dutch and Russian versions read his name as "Dee-Dee-Dee", while the Japanese, Spanish, German and Italian versions read it as "Day-Day-Day".
Y'all don' ''need'' trivia for The King! Ain't nothin' 'bout him that's trivial at all, no sirree!
**Additionally, the [[announcer]] does not say King Dedede's title in Japanese; he is simply referred to as "Dedede".
**King Dedede, uniquely uses two different announcer voice clips in the Chinese versions of ''Ultimate'' depending on the setting; the simplified version uses the English "King Dedede" clip, while the traditional version uses the Japanese "Dedede" clip like the rest of roster.
*King Dedede is one of two playable characters to appear in every game of the series who was not playable in every iteration, the other being [[Charizard]].
**When counting both versions of ''SSB4'' as the same game, [[Ridley]] also shares this distinction.
*In ''Kirby's Return to Dream Land'', the Hammer ability received a new move called Hammer Twirl, which is directly inspired by King Dedede's down aerial from ''Brawl'' in which he twirls his hammer below himself. Ironically, King Dedede's down aerial was changed in ''SSB4'', which was released after ''Return to Dream Land''.
*King Dedede is one of four characters to have a different Final Smash across every installment since Final Smashes were introduced; the other three are [[Pit]], [[Zero Suit Samus]], and [[R.O.B.]]
*Ever since his debut in ''Brawl'', King Dedede has the worst air speed of any fighter.
**King Dedede is also the heaviest ''Brawl'' veteran as of ''Ultimate'', though [[Snake]] was heavier than him in ''Brawl''.
*Starting with ''Smash 4'', if King Dedede is present when playing on [[Dream Land (SSB)]], the sprite of King Dedede in the background will not appear.

His Majehsty King Dedede (デデデ大王 Greatestest King Dedede) (also known as The King, 'cuz that's what he is) is undisputable king of the Kirbeh series. Since de-butt-in' in Kirbeh's Dream Land as the main charactah, The King has kept on keepin' on bein' the prime specimin of the whole series, and ain't no one got a bigger base o' fans than he do.

After only putterin' about in Super Smash Bros. an' Super Smash Bros. Melee, The King took his rightful throne in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a playahbul charactah, and has stayed there evah since.

Or'gin

Ahtwahk of The King from Kirbeh's Dream Land 2.

It weren't The King's fault tha' Naightmare was doin' evil things 'round the side, but he decided it was, and made all The King's hard work go down the sewers for it.

He's even a decent rival in them eatin' contests from Kirbeh Supah Stah, when he ain't cheatin'.

The King is oft'n voiced by th' one-and-only Masahiro Sakurai.

In Super Smash Bros., His Majehsty King Dedede sneeks a peek in the background of Dream Land. Accordin' to the official word, The King was s'posed to be in the actual game but didn' make the cut fer some reason 'r oth'r. But the King's fans represent, and called out the feds to the tune of 46 votes.[1]

In Super Smash Bros. Melee

Jus' like the previous game, The King is jus' hangin' in the background of Dream Land for Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Trophy

The King's likeness shows up as one o' them collectabble trophies. A real beaut, it is.

Trophy description

The King's trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
His Majehsty King Dedede is the not-disputable king of Dream Land. He says he's king, an' the citizens of Dream Land ain't so dumb as to quession it nosirree. The King is able to suck in air and fly jus' like his arch-enemy Kirbeh, as a result of vig'rous trainin' specifically to show up the dang puffball.

His Majehsty King Dedede finally steps to it in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, joinin' Kirbeh and Meta Knight as reppin' the series. The King wields his trademark hammah with extreme prejudice, can suck in foes for spittin', deploys his beloved subjects into the field for extra support, and uses his crowd-pleasin' supahjump to recover no mattah how far some oaf knocks him askew.

The King is a force t' be reckoned with on the battlefield, mostly 'cause of his signature chain grab that invalidates suckers by itself, and it's so dang tootin' difficult to remove him from the arena that tryin' to KO him just ain't feasible fer most foes.

Trophy

The King's trophy in Brawl.

The raightful king of the amazingly peaceful Dream Land. He continually makes other kingdoms weep with his perfect handlin' of any an' all royal situati'ns, and even takes time out of his busy day to do good deeds fer th' downtrodden populace. The King is often at arms with Kirbeh, despite this not bein' much of a fair fight fer the pink ball.

His Majehsty King Dedede is back in Super Smash Bros. 4. Some o' his tricks are a mite different, such as only t'rowin' Gordos, but overall he's the same deadly hammerin' hustle o' bustle 'round any parts. Some say he ain't no good no more, but there's the trick: some.

Trophies

King Dedede
North America He calls 'imself the King of Dream Land, an' don't you be forgettin' it, or y'all in for a world o' hurt. He really loves to eat, so it ain't no surprise he's a heavyweight faighter. Despite his size and low speed, he can eas'ly recover with his four jumps. His Jet Hammer will leave a mark on ev'ryone he meets.
Europe Being the raightful king, The King clearly doesn't care too much about all these attacks on his pehrson. In this game, his weight and hefty hammer make him real beefy, an' he can jump four times in mid-air, makin' it easy for him to get back to the stage. Fully charge his Jet Hammer for ultimate dededestruction.
King Dedede (Alt.)
North America For the Gordo Throw side special, The King sends a Gordo bouncing with a hammer strike. It bounces off walls—or sometimes gets stuck in 'em. After a while it'll disappear like a punk. If an enemy hits one, it'll bounce back toward you. Use the special again to whack it back at them!
