Could not edit user page

Hey Toomai, just letting you know that Smash Wiki will not allow me to edit my own user page because it says "you do not have permission to create this page" and I was wondering if you could do anything about it. Thanks for your help and understanding.

Warriorking98 (talk)

I’m not Toomai, but because the wiki is in a Red status, all userspace editing is restricted to autoconfirmed users. Please also keep in mind that userspace editing is currently heavily restricted for the same reason, so even once you do gain access, please try to make userspace edits sparingly, and do as much editing in the mainspace as you can in the meantime. Hope this helps. Black Vulpine of the Furry Nation. Furries make the internets go! :3 20:15, 8 July 2018 (EDT)

Violations of SW:1RV

It seems like SW:1RV has been more-or-less forgotten as of late. Every time I've logged on recently there's yet another edit war going on. Fortunately, they're usually pretty minor, but they also seem to be much more common than usual. Despite the policy clearly stating the only exceptions are vandalism and obviously false information like Mewtwo being in Brawl, it seems like most users have decided that they have final say over grammar, what qualifies as good trivia, how to handle unclear facts about Ultimate, etc., and no one is putting any effort into discussing it, just repeatedly undoing each other. The culprits aren't consistently the same people so it seems pointless to issue warnings, but I do think it's something that needs to be addressed -- I'm just not sure how would be the best way to go about it. TheNuttyOne 11:55, 14 July 2018 (EDT)

It's probably just because more edits means it's harder to catch everything and keep up with all that's going on, so people just edit and move on. I disagree that warnings are pointless. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Cloronic 15:39, 14 July 2018 (EDT)
I'm going to throw my paws up and admit that I've been guilty of this myself as of late, however I will attempt to mostly defend my actions by saying that usually when I do this, it's because some other policy was being violated at the time, which to be fair, 1RV permits. Super mushroom anomaly in Brawl

I'm not sure why this is, but for some reason although it normally has a multiplier of 1.56, when used on Captain Falcon in Brawl it seems to have a much higher damage multiplier. Do you know why this is? Alex the Jigglypuff trainer 12:33, 26 July 2018 (EDT)

Cannot View All Characters Under Tier list

Hey Toomai, I was speaking to Aidan on gmail about this and he suggested contacting you. My issue is viewing all of the characters under Smash 4 tier list. It tends to cut off 28 and 45 over on the right side. I am using Google Chrome on my Mac. I try to zoom in/out, but that does not work, and it also does not allow me to scroll over to see them all. Also I notice while I am at my HP using Chrome, it has a similar issue. But this only arises when I make my window smaller.

I had another friend try it as well, and he is having the same issue. On mobile we are at least able to scroll over to see all the characters, but desktop does not let us. Any ideas on how to fix it or possibly make the character tier list a smaller image? Maybe just a possibility to scroll?

I was thinking maybe one suggestion is bring that image towards the front? It seems to be that the white side of the page that has the "Ads keep SmashWiki independent and free:)" starts to cover the image. Is it possible to bring the image to the front so it is over that white page?

Thanks EKnopp21 (talk) 09:34, 18 September 2018 (EDT)

So, I'm not Toomai, but I happen to also use Chrome on Mac and have not had this problem. Perhaps you are running an old version of Chrome? If so see if updating it fixes the problem. Alex the Jigglypuff trainer 16:43, 18 September 2018 (EDT)

Well the easy answer is to just stay logged in so the ads go away, but yes I see what you mean. I'll make a tweak to the table that works elsewhere and see if that helps. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Polychromatic 06:46, 19 September 2018 (EDT)

Do you know how long it takes for the ads to go away? I actually have not seen any ads, maybe because I have an ad blocker? Should I just turn it off? But oh my God thank you so much for adding that scroll bar!! EKnopp21 (talk) 11:45, 19 September 2018 (EDT)

Tabs for Boxing Ring titles

Per my latest comment on Talk:Boxing Ring, I think the way localized Boxing Ring titles are being handled in Ultimate is going to be make things very messy if we try to put the Smash 4 and Ultimate titles in the same table. The ideal solution would be to use tabs, so we can put one table for each game in the same spot on the page and allow the user to switch between them. I'm picturing something like the special moves navigation box, but where clicking the icons actually changes the content in-place instead of sending you to a different page. Apparently there is a tabs extension for MediaWiki, which I imagine only Porplemontage can add, and which would require additional styling once added. Thoughts on this? Alternatives include stacking the two tables with expand/collapse toggles (collapsed by default for Smash 4 once Ultimate is out), or making a list article for each game instead of keeping the tables in the Boxing Ring article. Alternate costume image sizes for Ultimate

I feel the image size for Smash 4's alternate costumes is rather small. The image size on the page is one thing, but it should at least be clickable to see the costumes in higher quality. Assuming you'll be assembling the final templated images for Ultimate, can you consider making them something like 3 times bigger? SuperFalconBros (talk) 18:36, 19 November 2018 (EST)

This is a hard balance to get right because it's important to have the Find Mii colour bar at the bottom be a crisp and readable thickness at page viewing size while not simultaneously being an ugly eyesore at full size. I do believe the SSB4 ones are smaller than they need to be partly because there wasn't good access to large images at the time of creation, so if that was the major hurdle SSBU probably won't be the same. (Maybe I could try sizing up the SSB4 ones as a test?) Toomai Glittershine ??? The Quiet 06:40, 20 November 2018 (EST)
If it's tricky to deal with the color bar, maybe the template could be adjusted so that's a separate image? The stock heads are already separate. SuperFalconBros (talk) 10:19, 20 November 2018 (EST)
The original reason for making the colour bars part of the image was to stop good-faith-bad-knowledge users from easily changing them from "correct" to "what I think makes sense" (like, in SSB4, changing Charizard's yellow colour from "orange" to "yellow" even though "orange" is the in-game value). Toomai Glittershine ??? The Rainbow 06:58, 21 November 2018 (EST)

Well, I don't how long this has been available or if it's common knowledge already, but the website has renders available for all alternate colors. E.g. for Piranha Plant here and here. These are higher quality than the in-game files, and Pokémon Trainer is probably the only one whose palette image can't be created solely from these images. So, I'd be happy to go ahead and get started on the palette images using these (although I don't have the whole roster unlocked so I can't check all the Find Mii colors), but I wanted to check if you were already working on them? SVG stuff.

First off, I don't know if you know, but the Smash Ultimate site has official SVGs for all the series symbols now (including the stage-only ones). I imagine you've traced PNGs in the past to make the ones we've been using on here, but if you go into the sources on the site, you'll find this, which contains official SVG data for all the series symbols. If you use Inkscape like I do, you'll actually find them all under the Object/Symbols menu; the ones with the "m_s_" prefix are the stage versions, so I'd recommend using those alone for size consistency when you go to dress them up in the wiki style (the ones with just an "m_" prefix are for fighters, which are slightly smaller and don't include the icons for stage-only series; also the Smash logo is under the "mii" label).

As aside, do you also have the source SVGs for the article icons? I figured it might make sense to swap out the PNG versions with those like we've done with the series symbols, but even if we don't, I'd actually appreciate it if you uploaded those versions anyway because I could use them for something, if you don't mind. VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 12:55, 29 January 2019 (EST)

I knew the site had .svgs (though not about this specific file). I didn't really feel the need to replace what we have with them to begin with because I don't know of any noticeable inconsistencies; I guess I could but it's not exactly a high priority. (And of course we have to keep the manual ones for stuff like Brawl Snake and SSB64 Metal Mario.)
I do have the source .svgs for the wiki icons, but I was in the middle of remaking them for raw usage (because some of the first versions used Inkscape filters and stuff that browsers won't understand) so they're incomplete. You can see what I have so in Category:Wiki icons. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Cloronic 21:25, 29 January 2019 (EST)
Ah, I was talking about the game icons in particular (y'know, 64/M/B/4/U). As for the series icons, fair enough. Just figured I'd let you know. VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 22:03, 29 January 2019 (EST)
Ooh the game icons are a problem because they weren't done in pure .svg; the rainbow swirl of the "series" icon and the patterned fire of the SSB4 ones were generated by GIMP and pasted in. I haven't gone back to see if they can be tweaked to be more pure because I figured they were lesser priority. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Obfuscating 07:08, 30 January 2019 (EST)
Ah, well the SSB4 one I was primarily interested in the outline of the fire than the inner pattern; I could use that for something I'm doing, which is primarily why I'm asking. But even then, I don't think having SVGs with raster elements inside them would hurt for wiki use for the time being, and we can always update them in the future when we figure out a way to recreate the elements in pure vector.VinSymbol.pngVinLAURiA (talk) 15:33, 15 February 2019 (EST)

A possible way to treat both the ellipsis and the special stages symbol equally

I noticed that you said that you weren’t entirely happy with the decision that only Ultimate’s general music and spirits pages for minor universes received the elliosis. I agree, mostly because it makes no sense that a page represented by an ellipsis would link to pages with the special stages symbol. I do have a compromise that hopefully isn’t parroting previous points. However, as Serpent King and the other admins are clearly satisfied, I figured the safest bet was to propose this compromise specifically to you:

  • If the series of either the mii costume, item, or AT has either music or a spirit that is in the “other” category, then their page will be given the ellipsis.
    • Addtionally, even if the mii costume or item is completely unrepresented in Ultimate, if another character or item from the same series is still in Ultimate as a spirit, or music from their series is listed under “other” in Ultimate, they will also be given the ellipsis by extension. This refers specifically to the Virtua Fighter and Monster Hunter costumes.
  • If the item or mii costume (all past AT’s are at least spirits already) are completely absent in Ultimate, or their respective series is not represented in any way, shape or form, they will continue using the special stages symbol. For example, the Rareware items will continue using the special stages symbol.
  • Minor namco universes are a bit goofy. With the exception of Tekken, all of them have music represented by PAC-MAN instead of “others”. On the other hand, both the Boss galaga and Special Flag are listed under “others” for spirits. As only Galaga has a full song instead of a medley considered to be a PAC-MAN song, Boss Galaga receives the PAC-MAN symbol. The Special Flag will be given an ellipsis, due to only having a medley represented with music. Heihachi and Gil are part of Pac-Man’a roulette taunt, so I honestly don’t knoe where to put them. However, Lloyd is completely unrepresented in Ultimate, and thus will stay using the special stages symbol.

So, the following pages will still 100% use the special stages symbol: Battlefield (SSBM), Cloaking Device, and Lloyd Irving. Heihachi and Gil may still use the special stages symbol, but they could also use the ellipsis if the minor cameo is considered enough to give it to them.

Is this a good suggestion? I apologize if I sound tok desparate to change this. Lou Cena (talk) 23:17, 12 February 2019 (EST)

Dealing with talk page vandals

Is it fine if I remove talk page vandals. For example, the Skull Kid obsessed IP vandal on the leaks talk page, Memoryman3’s sockpuppet on Lucina’s talk page and the clones page, and arguably me on this talk page (if attempting to reopen the symbol argument too soon on a user’s talk page is really vandalism). They’re disruptive, and there is absolutey no reason to keep them if it’s clear vandalism. Lou Cena (talk) 20:27, 19 February 2019 (EST)

It seems like you are equating "disruptiveness" with "vandalism". This is not necessarily the case. Someone who posts "engfh" a hundred times or "character sucks ~~~~" on a talk page is clearly vandalism, and there's usually nothing wrong with removing it. But your given examples are more like someone continuing to push their personal agenda long after they've warn out their welcome. I'd argue those should be kept in most cases simply to have further documentation of the disruptive behaviour; if someone does choose to remove it, it should probably only be an admin if they just handed out a block for that specific disruption offense (and even then, why remove evidence). Toomai Glittershine ??? El Pollo 06:42, 20 February 2019 (EST)

Question about two proposals

1. The gender proposal: should your suggestion over to the Manual of Style page? So far, everyone seems to be in favor of keeping default genders on XXX (SSBX) pages, but is entirely fine with letting them be gender-neutral on non-fighter pages. Additionally, you also stated “[you are] of the opinion that the singular "they" feels clunky and hard to grasp in the wiki context. Allow it as optional? Fine. Mandate its usage? No thanks.” I understnd this point, so I combined this point and your compromise into this:

Some fighters have no defined gender in their home series and change gender in some of their Smash Bros. alternate costumes (such as Robin and Inkling). When discussing these characters in the context of their home series, it is recommended to refer to them with gender-neutral language. When discussing these characters as Smash Bros. fighters, it is preferred, though not strictly required to use the gender matching the default costume. In either case, omitting pronouns entirely is a valid style.

Toomai Glittershine ??? The Obfuscating 19:42, 23 January 2019 (EST) (sic)

Would this be fine? I believe discussion is ongoing, but after two months, I think your suggestion would be the best way to end it. It doesn’t make anything overly strict. I just want the permission before adding it to the Maual of Style page.

2. The symbol change: “If you can come up with a new argument, that might justify more discussion. But I really don't think it would be a good idea to do that right now. Give it at least a month (maybe two) to calm down and roll over. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Boss 19:54, 11 February 2019 (EST)”

While it has not been a month quite yet, I do have several new arguements. In a week or two (or even three), should I move the last part of the discussion over to the archive, start a new section, and ban any prior arguements from being used again in the debate?

Sorry about the giant copy-paste. I just want some clearance on these two discussions. If I’m being too disruptive, I’m willing to accept the ban I likely deserve. Lou Cena (talk) 01:23, 28 February 2019 (EST)

Your level of focus on these two topics, and apparent willingness to say "ban me if you don't like it", is concerning. Why do you care about these comparatively minor details the most out of everything you appear to edit?
  1. I'll go add something to the MoS later today.
  2. Honestly I feel like you asking if you can bring it up again should reset the timer on it. The spirit of my comment was something like "we need everyone to get a clean state of mind about this", which isn't helped when someone keeps asking if they can restart it. In any case, banning "prior arguements" would be absolutely the wrong thing to do.

Thanks for giving me answers to both questions. To answer why I care about these minor details so much that it concerns you, I can tell you already have a bad feeling about me, so while I knew that the giant copy-paste was probably disruptive, I felt like I needed some clearance on what to do with these two topics. Because I knew that I was causing disruption, I wanted to make it clear that I knew that what I was doing was probably wrong. I don’t know. I may be thinking that the rules ae overly strict right now, due to the Wiki’s red status. As for why I focusnon those two the most, I prefer to focus more on formatting than on content, as I only own Brawl, and am fairly unfamiliar with the vastness of competetive play. I don’t trust myeslf editing such things, but I did see a few holes in the formatting (at least for me personally). Normally, I would be editing the clone pages righr now, as that’s where I know the most info, but those are rightfully protected for only established users, a group I am not part of due to not being on the wiki for long enough. I apologize if I’m misusing what the talk page is for. Lou Cena (talk) 05:50, 1 March 2019 (EST)

Yemen's flag

I believe we are missing Yemen's flag, which was used here. I would upload it myself, but you had previously reuploaded all the flags with some tweaks, and I do not know what those tweeks are. Is it possible you can upload a tweaked version? SugarCookie 420 12:57, March 30, 2019 (EDT)

Alright Yemen coming up. FYI, the tweak is to extend the boundaries of the flag 100px beyond the borders, because technical reasons when scaled down (not gonna type it all out unless you want it). Toomai Glittershine ??? The Golden 19:33, March 30, 2019 (EDT)

As I was frustrated after making all those screenshots for nothing, I made this : [SSBU - Spirit Battle Previews]
Where could/should I link it ? YoshiRyu (talk) 07:56, April 3, 2019 (EDT)

You could put it in an "external links" section of the spirits page or something. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Interspacial 06:31, April 4, 2019 (EDT)
You mean this page ? It's a bit cluttered... maybe a sub-section in the Spirit Battle section ? YoshiRyu (talk) 07:23, April 4, 2019 (EDT)
I don't think it's a common thing for wikis to put "Check this external site for more info" in article bodies, which is why I suggested what I did. You could see if anyone else has ideas on its talkpage. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Pan-Galactic 06:33, April 5, 2019 (EDT)
Actually, I'm starting wondering if Spirit Battle shouldn't be a page of its own... It could have a general description, a section listing all the rules, and another listing all the conditions (and then the external link). YoshiRyu (talk) 07:42, April 5, 2019 (EDT)

Permission to reopen the symbol discussion

I know that I’ve been bothering you a lot lately, but this should be the last time I will in a while. I think enough time has passed. Nobody has mentioned anything about it since April Fools (which was my fault, but even then I was planning to reopen it before making a separate, even more unwise edit). Enough time has passed for all of us to be in a clear mind about it, and just because it’s a minor detail, doesn’t mean it should be dropped forever. I even made a draft to double check with you if I was following all of your suggestions (not hammering in a vote, staying civil, not discouraging any mention of anything on Template Talk:Symbol/Archive 1, etc.) Instead of using Template Talk:Symbol, I was planning on using the forum to have an official consensus on it once discussion was over. Lou Cena (talk) 01:30, May 2, 2019 (EDT)

I recommend you not waste your time. I took a quick poll on Discord and all staff who responded (and it wasn't just one or two) are still in unanimous agreement that this change would introduce usability issues and thus be actively detrimental to the wiki. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Eggster 21:44, May 3, 2019 (EDT)
What usability issues are you talking about exactly? Just curious, because I spent a while on that draft, and even did a thorough analysis on some of the key arguments from last time. Lou Cena (talk) 21:54, May 3, 2019 (EDT)
Because the three-dots symbol is what it is, it not only looks like a menu button rather than a symbol, but at small sizes it looks like misplaced text rather than an image. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Awesome 22:02, May 3, 2019 (EDT)

Rebound Modifiers

I've been doing some testing of rebounding in Ultimate, and in some cases the rebound duration doesn't seem to be concordant with how much damage they deal, particularly in the case of smash attacks. Do you happen to know if there is some sort of rebound modifier introduced in Ultimate? Alex the Jigglypuff trainer 11:43, June 23, 2019 (EDT)

I don't think there's a rebound multiplier, but it could be linked to some other multiplier. Do you have some specific examples? Ideally I'd like some cases where they match expectations as well as cases where they don't. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Steppin' 12:25, June 23, 2019 (EDT)
It turns out I was hitting the rebound duration cap, which in Ultimate appears to be 57 frames. Alex the Jigglypuff trainer 18:58, July 1, 2019 (EDT)

Add template?

Hi Toomai! I'm over at Inkipedia, and I was wondering if you can create Template:User NIWA at that wiki, I tried moving the code, but I'm not really good at HTML:/ , but if you could help, that would be great. Thanks! --Hoodie The Wolf (talk) 07:56, August 31, 2019 (EDT)Hoodie The Wolf

I prefer to help others learn rather than do it myself when it comes to other wikis. So how about you start the template on Inkipedia, doing a copy-paste of the code and changing the images to whatever you guys have, and we'll see how it looks. Toomai Glittershine ??? Done! Just one thing: I linked it on my userpage on Inkipedia, and the Bulbapedia logo duplicates after linking the account. But other than that, everything is linked, and works fine!

Quotes

I was wondering why you started changing the quotes all of a sudden. I thought the quotes were suppose to be at the top of a page and with the tab if there was more then one? Hasn’t it been that way for years? At least for them being at the top of a page. Why was it changed out of the blue? It looks really out of place. 172.58.173.254 08:37, September 21, 2019 (EDT)

Talk about moving the quotes somewhere else have existed for some time now, especially with many pages being crowded up on top with quotes. Also, the decision to use tabber was only made by one person, and many people on Discord have already expressed their dissatisfaction with using it that way. CookiesCnC Signature.pngCreme 09:24, September 21, 2019 (EDT)

It only looks sudden because I seem to be the only one who cares about carrying out the change; no one else has helped do it so things are way out of date. Also, there was a fair amount of dissent about the idea of pagetop quotes back when they first started being added, but again, no one seemed to actually put their money where their moth was and put them back in a section. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Sharp 11:07, September 21, 2019 (EDT)

But if it was being discussed on here, shouldn’t it continue on here? Not everyone has Discord. 172.58.173.254 13:40, September 21, 2019 (EDT)
No it wasn't only discussed on Discord, it's been smattered across various talk pages around here too. Here's an example. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Different 09:46, September 22, 2019 (EDT)

What about the fighter quotes, like for Ultimate, or item quotes? They've always been on the top of the pages too. Or are those "exceptions"? 66.194.104.5 20:50, September 25, 2019 (EDT)

"Always" is a point of view; compared to the lifetime of the wiki, pagetop quotes have only been a thing for less than 20% or even 15%. They are a relatively-recent invention that was never truty justified even at the time. If there isn't a place for them on the page itself, they shouldn't be taking up space in the header. No exceptions. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Hammer 06:32, September 26, 2019 (EDT)
