King Dedede (デデデ, Dedede) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He was confirmed on June 12th, 2018.
Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4
Aesthetics
- King Dedede's clothing and general design is more cartoonish, with higher contrast colors and simplified detailing on clothing.
- Subtle textural changes to the stars on his hammer give the illusion that they protrude slightly, as depicted in his official artwork.
- His clothes have been given more detail. The fur on his coat and hat appears fluffier and more detailed, and his obi has more depth.
- Like many other characters, King Dedede is more expressive, both with his face and especially his movements.
- Down taunt now has a more exaggerated animation.
Attributes
- Universal 3-frame jumpsquat significantly improves Dedede's ground-to-air transitioning, as his previous jumpsquat lasted 6 frames..
Ground attacks
- Up tilt and down tilt can be reversed upon start up.
Aerial moves
- Neutral aerial now causes King Dedede's belly to wobble around during the move.
- King Dedede has a new back aerial, which is now a horizontal hammer swing that better matches the move's hitboxes.
- Back aerial has significantly less landing lag.
Throws/other moves
- Down throw has an altered animation, with him slamming his opponent face-first onto the ground.
Special moves
- King Dedede now has the ability to inhale and spit back projectiles, including his own Gordos.
- The Gordos spawned by Gordo Throw have smaller pupils and animated spines.
- The Gordos spawned by Gordo Throw have significantly larger hitboxes that now cover the spines.
- The fire from Jet Hammer is now blue instead of red.
- King Dedede has a new Final Smash. The Final Smash features King Dedede taking his "Masked Dedede" appearance from Kirby Super Star Ultra before trapping opponents inside of a cage as he attacks them with a barrage of missiles and his Jet Hammer. This is an improvement compared to his Final Smash in Smash 4, as it previously allowed victims to air dodge out of it.
