Bowser (SSBU)

Bowser (クッパ, Koopa) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He was teased in a trailer released on March 8th, 2018 before being fully confirmed as playable on June 12th, 2018.

Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4

Aesthetics

  • Change Although the primary aesthetic is nearly identical to the previous entry, Bowser's overall appearance was given more detail and slightly darkened in color, akin to Brawl while retaining the brighter colors of SSB4.
  • Change Bowser's side taunt animation has been updated to match his upright stance.
  • Change One victory pose now shows Bowser running forward before swiping his claws twice.

Attributes

  • Buff Bowser seems to benefit the most from the universal implementation of the 3-frame jumpsquat, vastly improving his ground-to-air transitioning.

Ground attacks

  • Change The first attack in Bowser's neutral combo is now a Sumo-style palm strike. The second, however, is still the same punch as in SSB4.
  • Buff Down tilt can now trip opponents.
  • Change Down Smash has been altered to a grounded claw swipe that hits forward, then backward.

Throws/other attacks

  • Buff Pummel is faster.
  • Buff Up throw is different as Bowser now hits opponents upwards inside his shell rather than his head. It also deals more damage (6.5% → 14.5%).

Special moves

  • Change Whirling Fortress spins more at an angle than in previous entries.
  • Change Flying Slam now spins Bowser around more dramatically on the way down and was also given an explosion effect.
  • Change Fire Breath is more vibrant in color as opposed to the more realistic flame in SSB4.
  • Change Giga Bowser's functionality has drastically changed: rather than utilizing Bowser's Brawl moveset, he teleports to the background of the stage and aims a single OHKO punch. This move forces a Screen KO on its victims.
