Ridley (リドリー, Ridley), is an unplayable character in Brawl and only playable in Boss Battles via hacking. He has no specific voice actor, simply screeching. He is one of two boss forms of Ridley in Brawl, the other being Meta Ridley.

Ridley appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as the fifth boss during the Subspace Emissary, in which Samus and Pikachu must fight him. He is found at the end of the Research Facility II. In the cutscene prior to the battle, Ridley ambushes and grabs Samus, flying upward and scraping her along the walls. Pikachu breaks Samus free from Ridley's grasp using Thunder. In the first battle, Ridley has higher health and uses moves ranging from claw swipes to a move similar to Rayquaza's ExtremeSpeed to a tail swipe across the entire stage. Meta Ridley, his form in Metroid Prime, later attacks Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Captain Falcon, Olimar, Samus, Pikachu, and R.O.B..
When playable, Ridley is exceptionally weak, missing multiple moves that define his boss appearance, most notably Slamming Rush. Ergo, he lacks any kind of KO potential, relying on Flying Stomp, which doesn't track the opponent well. The most he can achieve is repeatedly using Fly Off to leave the stage to stall, but without a timer in Boss Battles, nothing happens. Without any kill power, Ridley is among the weakest Brawl bosses and among the worst characters in the game.

Ridley and his Meta Ridley form are resurrected by Tabuu, their true leader, in The Great Maze to face down the heroes. Oddly enough, they are resurrected as separate beings.
Attributes
Ridley has a pair of moves that strike the middle of the stage, those being Claw Sweep and Tail Sweep. Claw Sweep deals a single meaty hit, while Tail Sweep is a multi-hit move; the latter is trivial to SDI, so Claw Sweep is usually the better damaging option. Blasting Roar is generally useless, but the hitbox on the head can, against an uninformed opponent, deal a surprise hit.

Ridley's attacks
Because Fly Off does not lead into Slamming Rush, Ridley can use any other move in his kit alongside it, something unseen in the actual boss fight. Flying Stomp can be used in a way that is harder to telegraph (albeit with the usage itself given away by the camera), Blasting Roar can be used from centre-stage, and Claw Sweep and Tail Sweep can target the edge. Repeated uses of Fly Off can help Ridley stay out of range of even moves like Fox's Blaster, allowing for Ridley to effectively become unreachable and stall.

Ridley spends most of his time in the air over the abyss. Characters with strong aerials have an easier time, but in a pinch up-smashes can be used. Most of his attacks are either relatively slow or well telegraphed, thus staying alert can help the player avoid a lot of damage. The hardest attacks to dodge are his claw sweep (not his tail sweep) and loop-de-loop, but by paying attention to his attack order they can be predicted.

On higher difficulties of Subspace Emissary, defeating Ridley usually earns something valuable.
However, Ridley greatly suffers from a collection of problems that cause his moveset to be effectively non-functional, being mired with glitches. Fly Off doesn't initiate Slamming Rush, instead effectively being half the move, and while this can be repeated and used in conjunction with his other moves, it doesn't make up for the lost KO potential. Flying Stomp and Background Ram — his only other KO options — don't track the opponent well at all, making it almost impossible for him to connect strong hits against his opponents. Ergo, all Ridley is capable of doing is hoping an opponent jumps into his head during Blasting Roar to potentially land a KO, making him almost unplayable.

First or Second Move
Health values
*Ridley scrapes the stage with his tail. At low percentages, it covers half the stage. At higher percentages, it cover the whole stage, sometimes turning around at the end to double back. Sometimes he will use this attack twice in a row. It can be easily dodged by jumping over his tail.

First Move
Moveset
*Ridley flies off the screen, then rushes at the player horizontally. Oddly, he seems to charge at a random speed each time, regardless of difficulty. It can be dodged by sidestepping, air dodging, roll dodging, or jumping over/under with good timing.
Like all bosses, Ridley's moves are inputted using a set of commands with a controller, chiefly with the D-Pad. Move names are taken from the Japanese strategy guide for Brawl. Damage varies by difficulty, the following being taken from the game's files. Samus's Grapple Beam restores AI control. Unlike its boss appearance, Ridley cannot finish Fly Off → Slamming Rush, only having the input for the former move, and can't use Loop-de-Loop either.
*Ridley does a loop-de-loop and damages anyone who makes contact. This can be dodged by jumping into the middle of the loop, where he will just circle the player.

Second Move
{| class="wikitable"
*Ridley roars and flaps his wings violently, which kicks up wind that pushes the player back slightly. Damage can be taken by making contact with his head as this starts.
|-
*Ridley flies low and sweeps the stage with his claws. He screeches before this.

Codes
*Ridley lands on the floor, jumps up, and then drops down trying to stomp on the player. Because Ridley always drops down on the same spot he landed before jumping, it can be dodged by running to the opposite end of the stage.
Like all Brawl bosses, Ridley can be accessed using a Gecko code that enables debug mode controls for Player 3 in Boss Battles. It is encountered randomly without additional external modifications, meaning other bosses need to be defeated or forced to self-destruct with their own codes to reach Ridley's stage. The following codes are for the NTSC-U version of Brawl and both codes must be on.
*Ridley jumps up and then flies toward the player from the background, similar to Master Hand's punch, but with an erratic flight pattern. It will only hit the player if they are on or very close to the ground, so it can be dodged easily by jumping over it.

Origin of Attacks
{|class="wikitable" style="text-align:center"
Most of his attacks are completely made up for Brawl; however, there are a couple attacks that are somewhat retained: The attack that Ridley does when he flies to the background of the stage and tries to ram into the player looks very similar to how Ridley flew away in the beginning of Super Metroid. Also in Super Metroid, Ridley will often use his tail as a weapon by whipping it at Samus. In Brawl, Ridley does use his tail as a weapon, but not as a whip.

Because Ridley is only playable through hacking, he's banned by default in all competitive Brawl tournaments. While some boss characters have arguments to be legalised, Brawl's bosses have unique challenges that make them particularly unlikely cases. They do not conform to the usual ruleset, are exclusive to Boss Battles and thus their specific stage, are subject to Boss Battles's random boss selection without further modifications, and have varying difficulty levels that would require rulings to decide on them properly. This boils down to a very clunky experience that would likely end up delaying tournaments due to the length of time it takes for them to be set up. Furthermore, Samus's Grapple Beam can reset the controls of Brawl bosses, which could cause further ruling issues. Ridley's ability to stall out games with Fly Off is also something that could be considered uncompetitive and require further ruling debates, likely categorising it under scrooging. Ergo, Ridley has seen little to no competitive experimentation outside of casual matches.
The leader of the Space Pirates. He looks like a pterosaur but has high intelligence and a brutal nature. He plans to steal the baby Metroid from Samus for his own use. Ridley utilizes wings for a full range of flight and attacks with fireballs from his mouth and whips of his tail. As the culprit behind the murder of Samus's parents, the connections with Samus run deep.

Trivia
Trivia
*In Brawl, Ridley hangs motionless in the air once his death animation completes. Normally, the animation finishes far below the bottom of the screen, so this cannot be seen. However, it is possible to defeat him while he's very high up during some attacks with moves such as Thunder, which results in the animation not reaching the bottom of the screen and leaving him to float onscreen as the stage fades out.
* Some of Ridley's moves can cause him to slowly move forwards if an action isn't taken directly after he becomes actionable. If left alone, he will move forward indefinitely.
*Ridley has a move during the first battle similar to Dyna Blade in Kirby Super Star. He stomps on the ground, then takes to the background and jets straight ahead into camera view and flies up. He had done this before during a fight with Samus in Super Metroid, but he did so to get away, rather than to attack. A similar type of attack was employed by Meta Ridley in Metroid Prime. It is similar to Master Hand and Crazy Hand's Jet attack.
*In Brawl, he is unable to shoot fireballs as he did as an attack in past Metroid games. The fireball attacks were used by Meta Ridley.

Ridley (リドリー, Ridley), is an unplayable character in Brawl and only playable in Boss Battles via hacking. He has no specific voice actor, simply screeching. He is one of two boss forms of Ridley in Brawl, the other being Meta Ridley.

Attributes[edit]

Ridley has a pair of moves that strike the middle of the stage, those being Claw Sweep and Tail Sweep. Claw Sweep deals a single meaty hit, while Tail Sweep is a multi-hit move; the latter is trivial to SDI, so Claw Sweep is usually the better damaging option. Blasting Roar is generally useless, but the hitbox on the head can, against an uninformed opponent, deal a surprise hit.
