Ness brings out a baseball bat and swings it. This attack is similar to [[Marth (SSBM)|Marth`s]] in terms of function; the strongest part is at the tip and the strongest part is also at the bottom of the ID stack. This attack deals 24% with very high knockback (along with Mario`s). This attack is also unique among forward smashes (in fact, any smash attack in general) that it can reflect projectiles (like an actual baseball bat hitting a baseball). Unlike ''Smash 64'', Ness`s side smash now has to be sweetspotted (with the weakest part of it dealing Smash 64`s damage, which is 18%). But it deals much higher damage, has better range, and has 1 frame faster start-up. So overall, Ness`s side smash is more effective in ''Melee'' than in ''Smash 64'' (though not by that much).
