Yoshi's Island (ヨッシーアイランド, Yoshi Island) is a stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and a familiar stage in for3ds and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It could be considered the spiritual successor to Yoshi's Story from Melee, due to a similar structure and stage elements with a similar behavior and function.

:For other versions of this stage, see Yoshi's Island (disambiguation).
Stage overview
The stage consists of a main, slightly curved platform whose walls reach the bottom blast line. A long soft platform floats over it and periodically tilts during play.

Yoshi's Island (ヨッシーアイランド Yosshīairando) is a stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. This time, it is based on the design of mariowiki (which is also used in mariowiki and mariowiki). It has a horizontal design, with two main platforms. The top one tilts during play. There is a ghost, called the mariowiki, who appears and disappears at random, creating a temporary platform that can save recovering characters. The stage will also change between the four seasons during the match. This stage could be considered the "spiritual successor" to Yoshi's Story from Melee, because they both have walls going to the bottom of the stage, they both have attackable Shy Guys that fly in with Food items and because of the Support Ghost's similarity to Randall the Cloud.
A mariowiki randomly rises from either of the side pits, creating a temporary platform that can save recovering characters. It is commonly referred to as the Support Ghost, or Randall due to its similarity to Randall the Cloud from Yoshi's Story in Melee.
Like Yoshi's Story in Super Smash Bros Melee,
Some Fly Guys also randomly descend, carrying food unless it is turned off in the Item Switch. They can be hit and defeated by attacks, dropping their baggage, and are particularly prone to intercept projectiles.

clrl

The stage will also change between the four seasons during the match, playing a sound every time (no sound is played in Smash 3DS). These changes do not affect the gameplay in any way. The season at the start of the match is chosen randomly.
* Spring: Scenery here distinctly resembles the pastel-drawn backgrounds of the Overworld stages in mariowiki. Giant red tulips, like in the first level of Yoshi's Island, appear behind the stage.
* Summer: Flowers, resembling the Special Flowers in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, sprout everywhere with the coming of summer.
* Autumn: Fall colors take over and stationary Goonies appear, hovering in the sky with a four-frame animation. Wheat grass appears in the background.
* Winter: Heavy snowfall is this season's main addition to the graphics. Like most weather effects in Brawl, the snow is not rendered in 3D: this can be seen by pausing and angling the camera.

Ω forms and Battlefield form
In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, the Ω form of the stage, the stage will cycle through the seasons as normal; however, no sound effects will play, and only the Spring/Summer mix of the music will be heard. The base is flat, and the thin platform, the Blarggwich, and Fly Guys are absent.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Ω form and Battlefield form are similar to SSB4s Ω form; however, the stages do not extend below the blast line, and they are resized and reshaped to match Final Destination and Battlefield, respectively. In the Battlefield form, the top soft platform resembles the green platform on top of Blarggwiches, and the two bottom ones resemble the red soft platform of the normal form.

Hazards Off
With hazards off in Ultimate, the Fly Guys and Blarggwich don't appear, and the soft platform doesn't tilt. The seasons still change as usual.

This stage is from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. In Yoshi's Island, the design of the stages looks similar to drawings. In the first world, mariowikis appear in the background, go up in the sky, and try to fall on Yoshi. A large Chomp appears near the stage on each side but in the background. Each season represents certain levels in Yoshi's Island. In this stage, summer has smiling flowers that look like the collectible flowers used in Yoshi's Island to increase one's score. In Yoshi's Island, Shy Guys appear and carry items that one can get by throwing eggs at them. When the item is taken or if they stay on screen long enough they will fly away. Also from Yoshi's Island are the mariowikies, which served as a platform for a certain amount of time. The Blarggwiches are retained in this stage. The mariowikis were also enemies in Yoshi's Island. They appear in the stage during the summer and fall seasons.
This stage is based on mariowiki, which marked Yoshi's first appearance as a standalone playable character. Yoshi's Island has very distinctive graphics, designed to look like pastel drawings.

Seasons
mariowikies are ghostly entities that act as moving platforms, which Yoshi has to ride in certain stages. The soft platform above the stage represents a general platform design seen all throughout Yoshi's Island, while the see-saw movement pattern of it loosely resembles the Super FX tilting effects used for a variety of objects throughout the source game, particularly the animation of the spiked flipping platforms in mariowiki, though the functionality is very different.
When the match begins, the season that players start on is entirely random. The changes that the seasons make to the stage are merely aesthetic - they do not affect the gameplay in any way.
* Spring: Scenery here distinctly resembles the pastel-drawn backgrounds of the Overworld stages in Super Mario World 2. Giant red tulips, like in the first level of Yoshi's Island, appear behind the stage.
* Summer: Flowers, resembling the Special Flowers in the original Yoshi's Island, sprout everywhere with the coming of summer.
* Autumn: Fall colors take over and stationary Goonies appear, hovering in the sky with a four-frame animation. Wheat grass appears in the background, but in the actual games, wheat grass is never actually found.
* Winter: Heavy snowfall is this season's main addition to the graphics. Like most weather effects in Brawl, the snow is not rendered in 3D. Pausing and angling the camera will reveal that it is only two-dimensional.

In competitive play
Fly Guys are one of the many varieties of Shy Guy in the game. They fly around carrying items, dropping them when attacked. Some float in a specific path, while others stay onscreen for a limited time before fleeing.
Yoshi's Island is usually a starter stage in most tournaments, but is sometimes a counterpick as well, as the stage doesn't have any overly disruptive features. The Shy Guys can disrupt projectiles such as Falco's Blasters, and can gimp Ness's PK Thunder recovery. The walls on the side of the main platform prevent characters such as Meta Knight and Pit from gliding underneath the stage and make it more difficult for characters to be stage spiked. Donkey Kong does notoriously well here, as the tilted ledges allow him to climb back onstage earlier when using ledge drop to jump and Spinning Kong. For some reason, performing this causes Donkey Kong to retain his ledge intangibility frames until the move ends. The Support Ghost can also aid characters' recoveries by acting as a platform to land on, and if Ness or Lucas is trapped between this and the stage, they will not be able to recover.

Each season represents specific levels, and several other graphic elements in this stage are directly taken from the source game: the summer season somewhat resembles the levels of mariowiki and mariowiki, the autumn season might been inspired by the levels mariowiki and mariowiki, and the winter season looks similar to levels mariowiki and also mariowiki. mariowikis and mariowikis are recurring enemies, with the prior's large appearance on the stage resembling the mariowikis which chase Yoshi and destroy terrain in mariowiki and mariowiki, and the smiling flowers which appear in the Summer version resemble the collectible mariowikis which contribute to the final score in each level. A moon can be seen off-screen, only visible without mods through either Olimar's Final Smash or Ultimates camera - this moon was the location of the battle against mariowiki's boss mariowiki, and can also be seen in the final boss battle against Baby Bowser.
clrl

Tournament legality
In Brawl, Yoshi's Island is a starter stage in the vast majority of tournaments, primarily due to a lack of other, more neutral stages. The Shy Guys fly into random positions, and can disrupt projectiles, such as Falco's Blaster. The walls on the side of the main platform prevent characters such as Meta Knight and Pit from gliding underneath the stage and make it more difficult for characters to be stage spiked.  The Blarggwich can also aid characters' recoveries by acting as a platform to land on; however, its arrival and departure is random, and comes without any prior indication, preventing players from doing so consistently. Ness and Lucas are especially disadvantaged on this stage due to its hazards, as both the Shy Guys and Blarggwich can intercept their recoveries at random with almost no time to react. Donkey Kong does notoriously well here, as the tilted ledges allow him to easily perform a completely invincible Spinning Kong by dropping ledge, jumping, and immediately pressing up-B while holding towards the stage.

In Ultimate, Yoshi's Island is a counterpick in most stagelists. Turning off stage hazards removes the Shy Guys and Blarggwich; however, the slants in the middle of the stage affect jab locks and projectiles, while also making smaller characters even more difficult to hit. Additionally, the steep slants at the edges of the stage affect ledge trapping, especially with regards to 2-framing, and the horizontal blast zones are rather close to the stage.

Yoshi's Island (ヨッシーアイランド, Yoshi Island) is a stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and a familiar stage in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It could be considered the spiritual successor to Yoshi's Story from Melee, due to a similar structure and stage elements with a similar behavior and function.

Stage overview[edit]

The Blarggwich and Fly Guys in Brawl.

The stage consists of a main, slightly curved platform whose walls reach the bottom blast line. A long soft platform floats over it and periodically tilts during play.

A Blarggwich randomly rises from either of the side pits, creating a temporary platform that can save recovering characters. It is commonly referred to as the Support Ghost, or Randall due to its similarity to Randall the Cloud from Yoshi's Story in Melee. Like Yoshi's Story in Super Smash Bros Melee, Some Fly Guys also randomly descend, carrying food unless it is turned off in the Item Switch. They can be hit and defeated by attacks, dropping their baggage, and are particularly prone to intercept projectiles.

The stage will also change between the four seasons during the match, playing a sound every time (no sound is played in Smash 3DS). These changes do not affect the gameplay in any way. The season at the start of the match is chosen randomly.

  • Spring: Scenery here distinctly resembles the pastel-drawn backgrounds of the Overworld stages in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Giant red tulips, like in the first level of Yoshi's Island, appear behind the stage.
  • Summer: Flowers, resembling the Special Flowers in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, sprout everywhere with the coming of summer.
  • Autumn: Fall colors take over and stationary Goonies appear, hovering in the sky with a four-frame animation. Wheat grass appears in the background.
  • Winter: Heavy snowfall is this season's main addition to the graphics. Like most weather effects in Brawl, the snow is not rendered in 3D: this can be seen by pausing and angling the camera.

Ω forms and Battlefield form[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, the Ω form of the stage, the stage will cycle through the seasons as normal; however, no sound effects will play, and only the Spring/Summer mix of the music will be heard. The base is flat, and the thin platform, the Blarggwich, and Fly Guys are absent.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Ω form and Battlefield form are similar to SSB4's Ω form; however, the stages do not extend below the blast line, and they are resized and reshaped to match Final Destination and Battlefield, respectively. In the Battlefield form, the top soft platform resembles the green platform on top of Blarggwiches, and the two bottom ones resemble the red soft platform of the normal form.

Hazards Off[edit]

With hazards off in Ultimate, the Fly Guys and Blarggwich don't appear, and the soft platform doesn't tilt. The seasons still change as usual.

Origin[edit]

"Make Eggs, Throw Eggs," the first level of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

This stage is based on Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, which marked Yoshi's first appearance as a standalone playable character. Yoshi's Island has very distinctive graphics, designed to look like pastel drawings.

Blarggwiches are ghostly entities that act as moving platforms, which Yoshi has to ride in certain stages. The soft platform above the stage represents a general platform design seen all throughout Yoshi's Island, while the see-saw movement pattern of it loosely resembles the Super FX tilting effects used for a variety of objects throughout the source game, particularly the animation of the spiked flipping platforms in Salvo the Slime's Castle, though the functionality is very different.

Fly Guys are one of the many varieties of Shy Guy in the game. They fly around carrying items, dropping them when attacked. Some float in a specific path, while others stay onscreen for a limited time before fleeing.

Each season represents specific levels, and several other graphic elements in this stage are directly taken from the source game: the summer season somewhat resembles the levels of Hit That Switch!! and Visit Koopa and Para-Koopa, the autumn season might been inspired by the levels GO! GO! MARIO!! and Chomp Rock Zone, and the winter season looks similar to levels Ride The Ski Lifts and also Danger - Icy Conditions Ahead. Chomps and Goonies are recurring enemies, with the prior's large appearance on the stage resembling the Chomp Sharks which chase Yoshi and destroy terrain in Marching Milde's Fort and KEEP MOVING!!!!, and the smiling flowers which appear in the Summer version resemble the collectible Smiley Flowers which contribute to the final score in each level. A moon can be seen off-screen, only visible without mods through either Olimar's Final Smash or Ultimate's camera - this moon was the location of the battle against World 5's boss Raphael the Raven, and can also be seen in the final boss battle against Baby Bowser.

Tournament legality[edit]

Trivia[edit]

  • This is the third stage in the series that is named "Yoshi's Island". However, it is the first of these to be based on the game Yoshi's Island.
  • The Blarggwich can be seen off-screen by pausing while it isn't supporting the characters.
  • This is the only stage in Brawl from Mario or any of its sub-universes to not be restricted in any tournament, as Delfino Plaza, the only other Mario-related stage that is not banned, is almost always a counterpick.
  • There is an extra track that can play in this stage. The Obstacle Course track that is listed in "My Music" and in the Sound Test is the variation that plays in the spring and summer seasons. There is another variation that plays during autumn and winter, but it is not available in the Sound Test, though it is available in the OST rip. However, in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, both versions of Obstacle Course are in the sound test, as Obstacle Course (Spring / Summer) and Obstacle Course (Autumn / Winter). In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, meanwhile, the songs play back to back.
  • Oddly, one of the pictures in the press kit for Ultimate of this stage has text in top left that reads "<DEBUG> SEASON=SUMMER".
  • This is the only version of Yoshi's Island that has never been renamed, as Smash 64 and Melee's versions of Yoshi's Island are named "Super Happy Tree" and "Yoshi's Island (Melee)", respectively.
    • Because of this, it and the Yoshi's Island stage from Melee are the only two stages to share the same name in Ultimate. All other stages that share names, such as the "Kongo Jungle" stages from Smash 64 and Melee, were renamed for disambiguation purposes. However, in the original Japanese version of Ultimate, the two Yoshi's Island stages in have different names.
  • In Ultimate, there is a glitch involving the Smart Bomb that causes the music to stop playing. It is currently unknown, however, why this happens. It is also unknown if this glitch will work on other stages.
  • In Ultimate, this is one of the few stages where every Assist Trophy can appear.
  • In Ultimate, the following Poké Ball Pokémon can only be summoned on the Battlefield and Omega forms of this stage: Moltres, Kyogre, Palkia, Giratina, Arceus, Victini, Kyurem, Dedenne, Xerneas, and Marshadow.
    • Lunala cannot be summoned at all on this stage.
