Often [[Kraid]], the giant alien monster in the background, will rotate the stage in either direction, moving the whole rock for only a few seconds at a time. However, no limit is set regarding to what extent it may be rotated in total, meaning it can flip upside down. Brinstar Depths (ブリンスタ深部, Brinstar Depths) is a stage in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In Melee, it can be unlocked by playing 50 battles in Versus Mode. It is also one of Samus's home stages, but the player plays against Ganondorf and his teammates on this stage in All-Star Mode.
Stage overview[edit]
The fight takes place in an underground lair with magma deep below Brinstar. This stage is unique due to it being a giant irregular stone (with one continuous "floor") with two floating smaller companion stones at the top and bottom of the stage (though the terms "top" and "bottom" are loosely applied). The lava at the bottom of the screen is merely graphical (unlike Brinstar's acid) and functions only as a blast line. Often Kraid, the giant alien monster in the background, will rotate the stage in either direction, moving the whole rock for only a few seconds at a time. However, no limit is set regarding to what extent it may be rotated in total, meaning it can flip upside down. Even if Kraid rotates the stage to how it began, its position is unlikely to be precisely the same, due to the fact that the rotations are slightly randomised in duration. Also of note is that in Melee, ledges are completely absent, though wall-grapples remain effectual. However, in Ultimate, ledges do exist at various points along the continuous floor.
Ω form and Battlefield form[edit]
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Ω form and Battlefield form are set on a flat version of the normal form's main platform that is also the same size and shape as Final Destination and Battlefield, respectively. The three soft platforms' designs are the same as the walkway of the main platform. Kraid is absent. The stage also does not rotate.
As with some other Ω forms, the stage select preview of the Ω form of this stage is an early version of the stage, and the final version differs slightly in design. Notably, there are no such discrepancies on Ω Brinstar, which suggests that the changes were made so that the 2 Ω forms would not have completely identical main platforms.
Origin[edit]
Kraid first appeared in Metroid as a boss and as the boss for Brinstar in Super Metroid. However, his appearance in Super Metroid was dramatically changed and remained as such in Metroid: Zero Mission. Kraid's appearance in this stage is based on his character design in Super Metroid. The stage itself, however, bears no resemblance to his lair in either game. The name of the stage is a reference to the proximity of Kraid's lair being deep below Brinstar in Metroid.
Tournament legality[edit]
Brinstar Depths is banned in both singles and doubles tournaments, primarily due to its low blast line, which strongly favours vertical KO moves. Additionally, the stage lacks edges that can be grabbed giving characters who have strong recoveries an advantage. Similarly, some small platforms can quickly become isolated thus creating stalling opportunities. Depending on the placement of such platforms, caves of life can also become a problem.
Names in other languages[edit]
Trivia[edit]
- In both Melee's debug menu and Ultimate's game files, this stage is referred to with Kraid's name.
- In Ultimate, Brinstar Depths and Brinstar share the same main platform and soft platforms for their Ω form and Battlefield form, but with some very minor differences.
- For unknown reasons, both Super and Poison Mushrooms never appear on this stage in Ultimate.
- This is the only Metroid stage in Ultimate not to have any unlockable characters fought on it.
- The following Assist Trophies cannot appear on this stage: the Moon, Nikki (due to the dark background obscuring her drawings), and Squid Sisters.
- Assist Trophies that can only appear on the Battlefield and Omega forms of this stage are Chain Chomp, Tiki, Burrowing Snagret, Kapp'n, Devil, Arcade Bunny, Knuckles and Rathalos.
- Poké Ball summons that can only appear on the Battlefield and Omega forms of this stage are Alolan Exeggutor, Lunala and Marshadow.
